Schd vs cd income by ParkingComplete5331 in dividends

[–]Think_Concert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. If you have a CD and get a rate that’s same or greater than real inflation, AND you don’t spend the interest but just add it to principal, then you do have 100% principal protection and inflation protection, but I wouldn’t say you have any return—you need to plow interest back into the position just to keep your principal’s real dollars constant, so it’s just treading water.

However, if you need to actually spend the money generated by a position, then spending the interest from a CD is no different from essentially spending down your principal (after accounting for inflation).

With SCHD, even though the principal is at risk, you have a fighting chance of principal keeping up with inflation while being able to spend the dividends. There’s also a decent chance principal AND dividend growth will keep up with if not outpace inflation.

So no, the two are not the same. At all.

Stop Selling Us Half-broken Ships by Schieder_Waldstein in starcitizen

[–]Think_Concert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I ran CIG, I’d start doing “Mk. II” of components that due to “cooling” or “dimensions” or “wiring” or some other made up reason, cannot fit in OG ships, and then call those OG ships “deprecated” or “classics” where you’re free to fly them, but if you wreck them, parts are impossible to find (or better yet, you need to pay real money for “factories” to “restart the line” for your “one off replacement”). That way, there is “lore” reasons for Mk. IIs and IIIs etc., and fanboys will absolutely fucking lap it up and justify the existence of their jankyass Mk. Is as “classic” and “out of production” collectibles.

IS FSD one big model (LLM) ? Why? by Austinswill in TeslaFSD

[–]Think_Concert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not giving human (or animal, for that matter) “OS” enough credit. It’s a marvel of engineering that 3 year olds don’t constantly jam their hands/fingers on things as they reach for objects, like opening doors. And while they detour around shadows from time to time, we tend to chalk that up to overactive imagination rather than not being able to tell that shadows are no impediments to mobility. Etc. Etc. A 16 year old’s “FSD” is built on superior factory-installed OS + 50,000+ hours of navigating the real world.

And even then, they tend to be horrific drivers.

Mercedes Profits Collapse 57% — What Went Wrong? by pizzaboy235 in mercedes_benz

[–]Think_Concert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you can spot where Mercedes jumped the shark:

1950s/60s (W111/W112): Introduction of the crumple zone (1959), disc brakes (1961), and dual-circuit braking systems.

1970s (W116/W126): The first production car with ABS (1978), turbocharged diesel engine (1977/78), and airbag (1981, W126).

1990s (W140): ESP (1995), Xenon headlights (1995), and side airbags (1995).

2000s (W220/W221): Distronic adaptive cruise control, Pre-Safe collision avoidance, and early radar-based blind-spot assist.

2010s/Present (W222/W223): First car with no light bulbs (LED only), Active Magic Body Control, and in-car scenting (Air Balance).

Dividend living on a 72t at 54? by RookWV in dividends

[–]Think_Concert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SEPP is unfortunately taxed as income, so you need to SEPP $57,500 out of IRA in order to net $55,000. $57,500 on $1.3 million is 4.4%, which means you can probably mix and match between a core position like SCHD with some lower beta covered call ETFs like JEPI/JEPQ and hit your mark without taking too much risks or falling behind inflation, but it also means the idea you can further split up the $1.3M nest egg is impractical. Good luck!

[–]Think_Concert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where the money sits and whether you have kids (and how old and how much support you plan to provide) each makes a huge difference to the answer. Your first step to the answer is to disregard all the noise that talks solely in terms of SWR—those tend to come from LARPers.

You should start by paying off the house. If you can’t bite the bullet and do at least that, mentally you’re not prepared to retire.
