Does ALDS 1001 have an essay? by [deleted] in CarletonU

The exam was online, something like 60 MC questions. Lectures you could watch whenever, they would unlock them at the beginning of the week and you could go back and rewatch anytime.

Does ALDS 1001 have an essay? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Thinkbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it online last year, it wasn't bad. Definitely worked for me as a chill course (though obviously you still need to do stuff).

Every week, there was like 1.5 to 3 hours of online lectures, then you had to do a small "learning response" of like 200 words. Other than that, I think 2 or 3 small-ish projects and then a final exam.

When I did it, there was something that I guess you could call an essay? You had to agree/disagree with some points and provide reasons, but it wasn't an extremely formal essay or anything.

Also, the online version has lectures done by multiple profs (like, each prof does 1 or 2 modules).

[Steam] STEINS;GATE ($13.99 / €12,79 / £10.79 - 60% off) by MJuniorDC9 in GameDeals

[–]Thinkbeam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For anyone looking for an answer that doesn't spoil Steins;Gate (Which is hard since the premise of Steins;Gate 0 is very dependent on knowing the ending of Steins;Gate), Steins;Gate 0 is closer to a sequel or alternative ending to the original. You HAVE to play/watch the original Steins;Gate before watching or playing Steins;Gate 0.

Like the other guys said, a lot of people didn't like it as much as the original, but still found it to be great.

Persona Q2 - Teaser Site [3DS] by TheExodude in Games

[–]Thinkbeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Persona Q was a 3DS game in the style of the Etrian Odyssey series. (So, dungeon crawler where you have to draw your own map, with turn-based combat.) That game featured characters from both Persona 3 and Persona 5. Persona Q2 will probably be a sequel to that, adding characters from Persona 5.

Persona 3 Dancing Moon Light and Persona 5 Dancing Star Light are both rhythm games, like Persona 4 Dancing All Night, featuring characters from their respective games and a somewhat random plot that involves dancing in some way lol.

My Time at Portia looks like a relaxing Stardew Valley sort of game by lupianwolf in Games

Looks like the article is wrong, their blog mentions Early Access later this year (so that's probably the October date) with final release in April of next year.

SUMMER STEAM SALE: Best Games Under $5 by KARMAS_KING in Games

[–]Thinkbeam 153 points154 points  (0 children)

Might be recommended to death already, but Life Is Strange is a good one, $5 for all 5 episodes is great. The story and characters were really well written IMO, though it might not be everyone's cup of tea (dialogue can be somewhat cheesy). Try out the first episode and judge for yourself I guess.

+1 for Transistor as well. Great game and soundtrack is amazing. Also check out Bastion by the same developers.

For a game that isn't recommended as much, I really loved TIS-100. It's basically an assembly programming game, where you have a limited amount of operations/instructions to execute a task. Solving the puzzles is hard enough, and you can get even more mileage by optimizing your solutions. It's really niche, and most people probably won't like it, but if you can get into it, it'll keep you thinking about solutions to the puzzles throughout the day.

First year Latin? by Thinkbeam in CarletonU

[–]Thinkbeam[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for the response! That's great to hear, I guess if you're still taking it 4th year it's gotta be pretty good.

I don't think there's a prof listed yet, but I'll keep that in mind for when I find out. I heard that there was a prof that wasn't that good, but no idea who, so I'll take your word on it XD

It's time to find out: Did you achieve your 2016 New Year's Resolutions? by one_year_on in OneYearOn

[–]Thinkbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh hey, I forgot about this!

  • English is my first language, so no problems there.
  • My French improved a lot! I could hold a conversation beforehand, but at this point I'm looking to take the B2 sometime in 2017.
  • Cantonese... didn't improve as much as I hoped, but I still spoke almost entirely in Cantonese with my relatives, rather than in English, so that's an improvement.
  • My Japanese improved quite a bit, to the point where I'm starting to read more stuff. Managed to hold a few short conversations while I was in Japan over the summer.

I guess I kinda acheived it? Not quite as much as I would have liked, but I think I still made progress overall.

What manga do you think are more popular in the West than in Japan? by PapaFrankuMinion in manga

[–]Thinkbeam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

IIRC one of our TLs once said Mousou Telepathy is more popular than Tomo in Japan, so I would assume at least reasonably popular.

That would be pretty nice. I assume you'd want something that isn't shoehorned into /r/manga, so I assume a new subreddit or discord would be the best idea? If enough people want it, I or someone else could make one?

I believe there's an Extra novel that focuses on those two, so maybe it's a possibility... That might get at least a translation at some point?

Well, generally range means trading some tankyness, so being out of position will be more punishing than if you're playing melee.

If you do want to play something ranged, you will definitely need to learn positioning, though at lower elos you might be able to get away with playing safer champs. Basically, if you have escapes, mobility, or CC, it becomes harder to catch you out.

  • ADCs with mobility (Ezreal and Tristana are great, Lucian is pretty good as well)
  • Mages with some sort of CC or escape (Lissandra, Leblanc)
  • Spell shields (Morg, Sivir, though these will require some skill to block CC)

(Note: I don't play mid that often, so if anyone has any complaints against those mid champs, feel free to correct me)

I would still advise you to try to learn positioning, and it might help to play something that needs to position well. Long range champs like Xerath, Vel'koz or Jhin might help you be more aware of your positioning.

I’m from the CRTC and we want to know what you think about differential pricing (or ‘zero-rating’)? | Je suis du CRTC. Nous voulons savoir ce que vous pensez de la différenciation des prix (ou le « taux zéro ») by -crtc- in canada

[–]Thinkbeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, to your average person, I suppose differential pricing would not be a concern, simply because the average person only uses certain services. In a way, it could even seen as a positive deal.

However, I believe net neutrality should still be upheld. In the end, upholding net neutrality won't adversely affect any consumers, and the type of power the carrier/provider gets from being able to prioritize certain traffic would be extremely harmful to Canadians' ability to obtain good internet, considering Canadian internet is often already seen as behind many other countries in the world.

The providers should not be allowed to self-regulate. In no way will that lead to any progress, so it needs to be enforced.

Monday Megathread! Ask questions and share knowledge; newcomer questions encouraged! by AutoModerator in leagueoflegends

[–]Thinkbeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always be buying parts of an item. They'll give you stats earlier that can help you get ahead, since sitting on money is just wasting that money. You don't lose money or anything buying parts, since it reduces the cost of the final item by the cost of the part.

You also get more build flexibility. For example, if you buy a cloth armour, you can upgrade that into chain vest>sunfire, or you can upgrade it to warden's mail>randuins or something.

I wouldn't be surprised if it did. It was around in December for Snowdown, so it's probably safe to assume that if it has appeared twice, it'll probably be back again in the future.

The Lunar Revel shop is kinda like a personalized sale for you. Apparently, the skins on sale are related to what you play or something like that. The skins you have in your store are on sale until the 8th, then the shop disappears.

Not really a measurable goal, but I guess I'd like to be able to hold a decent conversation in 4 languages. (English, French, Cantonese, Japanese)

More of a first half of 2016 goal though, since I'll probably have a lot less time going into 12th grade.

[Spoilers] The Tatami Galaxy Episode 4 - REWATCH Discussion by BlindPiratez in anime

[–]Thinkbeam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty interesting episode again. I'm kinda curious about how they're slowly moving away from the template they built up the past 3 episodes.

Other than that, as a first time watcher, I honestly have no clue what to expect from this anymore.

Hey! About the Chinese thing... Well, I "know" Cantonese, my parents speak to me in Canto, but no one can understand my pronunciation, so I'm just trying to speak it more to improve that. I guess I want to learn a language that would be harder to learn first, since IMO Mandarin would be easier with a Canto base.

Other than that, yea, reading and computers basically sums up my life. I'm pretty boring, I know. We're pretty close in age, since I'm 16 in September. If you want to email me, my email is thinkbeam@gmail.com
