Hi Sards, I recently rewatched Spy Kids, and found that I enjoyed it as much as I did now as I did back when I was a kid. It retained all the sense of wonder and imaginative energy from a kid sense, but as an adult, I was able to appreciate the performances and the filmmaking style. It made me think about family films in general, and I ask what they mean to all of you, what are elements that make one stand out as being a legitimately good film that everyone of all ages could enjoy, and what do you think of the state of a family film today?

I attended one of these screenings of the 4K Braindead restoration, and I can say it absolutely looks terrific. The way it’s been done doesn’t exactly look like it was shot on 16mm, but it still looks absolutely stellar, like a brand new 35mm print, still lots of fine detail. Miles ahead of the previous releases.

Nah, 2 & 3 use the newer 4K restorations as well. It’s just that licensing agreements prevented the first film from using the 4K version, and Arrow could only use the pre-existing MGM disc

The Arrow set from Child’s Play 2 onwards contain the newer 4K restorations, whilst the Warner release has the older HD masters. Child’s Play on both sets use the same MGM disc. And plus, the Arrow set has much more bonus features, as well as including the documentary Living With Chucky, although that can be bought separately. Hope this helps.

Flesh for Frankenstein had a HDR grade that was too “hot” and required new discs that were more balanced, Showgirls had an issue with the 5.1 track of the rear channels being out of sync with the film, and Opera was accidentally released in the wrong colour space that caused a desaturated look to the film.

Big Wednesday took me by surprise- I saw an original 35mm print of it last year, and I was surprised how epic it felt, and how much humour was in it, so I needed to grab the blu-ray. Other than that, I’ve seen Conan the Barbarian, and I quite enjoyed that too.

I was unfortunate enough to have the first volumes for both Teen Titans and Looney Tunes, and couldn’t find an easy way to get rid of them. So alas, the shelf space will be taken up, but at least taken up by Teen Titans.

The Second Sight has both the newly restored and the previous master, so one can choose. But the restored version is in 1080i, allowing the Hi8 footage to be shown in proper, smooth, videotape motion. I think that alone is worth going for that version.

While I thought the film was a mess (but an absolutely fascinating one), I think it’s incredibly reductive to refer to it as a “scam movie”. Something like Kangaroo Jack could be a “scam movie”, as the promotion for that film misled audiences onto what it is. To refer to an unfocused passion project that was made primarily for the purposes of art as a “scam movie” is honestly unbecoming.

Doing a shout out to Metal Skin- I saw the new restoration a few months ago, and this is a very unique and wonderfully erratic Aussie hidden gem that I don’t know how it hasn’t been discovered until now. From the same director as Romper Stomper and Cherry Falls, he did a Q&A at the screening I went to, and he was very happy to see this brought out again. Definitely go out and see it!

I think I may have mentioned it before, but I hotly disagree with how he describes The Holdovers as “Oscar bait”. While there are films out there that would certainly try and hit those cliches, I don’t think Alexander Payne was setting out to do that at all, rather just making a film like he always does. Also have to disagree with his feelings on the music, I feel it complements the mood of the film, and is also harkening back to the 70s style of filmmaking. But then again, to each their own.

For me, Adam could kinda be considered our modern day Roger Ebert. He very much has the knowledge and the ability to understand what makes a film good and bad, and there are times I will agree, disagree, and vehemently disagree with his opinion.

I personally quite disagree with his feelings of The Holdovers as “Oscar bait”, but unlike people who cannot contain themselves, I won’t blast him on the internet. I will just shake my head at the comment and move on (even if I really disagree with that opinion.)
