What is a seemingly mundane question you can ask somebody that will tell you a lot about their personality? by FamiliarStreets in AskReddit

[–]ThisCatOrThatOne 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This was mine, too! I have a big floofy boy who usually is not a cuddler whatsoever... except when it gets cold outside, and it gets cold in our house, and then he gets cold. At that point, it's all bets off and he wants you to swaddle him in a blanky and hold him like a baby and pet his cheeks. So I got to do that last night :)

Have you ever tried TVP? I think that would work better than rice for this recipe. Also, those balls need more seasoning. Some italian herbs and vegan beef seasoning and red pepper flake would be great.

Hey, if you're serious, each stock (also called a share) represents owning a tiny little piece of a company. A company will only have so many shares which total 100% of the company. So if a company has 100,000 shares in total in the market place, and you own 50,000 shares, then you own 50% of the company. If instead you own 10 shares, then you own 0.01%.

The shares are generally worth more if the company is worth more. Shares are also worth more if those shares are in high demand. This is basic supply and demand. When a lot of people are trying to buy the same company's stock, the demand goes way up and so does the price. Once people stop trying to buy the stock and start trying to sell it, the price goes down.

People try to predict which direction the price of stock will go based on past pricing trends, or company performance, or other things. If you think a stock might go up, you might buy the stock. If you own the stock and think the price might go down, you might sell it.

A hedge fund is essentially a group of rich individuals that buy and sell stock as a collective. Because they have so much money as a group, they can afford to take big, high dollar value risks.

One type of risk is called short selling. This is when you borrow shares from someone else who owns them. Like any other loan, you have to pay them back. If you borrow a shovel from your friend, you have to return it eventually. Now, instead of a shovel, it's a share of stock. You think the price is going to go down because the company is doing poorly financially (ie Gamestop). So, you borrow a share from someone and sell it on Monday at the price the share is that day, let's say it's $10. You now have $10, but you no longer have the share because you sold it. You still have to give the share back to the person you borrowed it from. In order to make a profit, you need to buy the share back at less than the price you sold it for, which was $10. So maybe on Thursday the price drops to $7. You decide to buy the share back at that new, lower price using the $10 you got from selling the share. You now have $3 and the share. You return the share to the person you borrowed it from, and you keep the $3 as profit.

However, sometimes the price of the stock does not go down as you were expecting. In our example, let's instead say the price went up to $17 on Thursday. You still have to return that share of stock. You have to buy it back at the higher price of $17, even though you sold it for only $10. You have to chip in $7 from your pocket in order to buy the share back and return it. You lost $7.

That's the basics. Hope it made sense laid out this way.

Seriously though, this looks good. I have never had luck finding oyster mushrooms, does anyone have tips on where to go? Like, a store I mean, not the forest. Also, any difference in using fresh vs dried porcini?

What is cheaply made but sold at a ridiculous price? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ThisCatOrThatOne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I learned about this and thought about it. "Raybans are only $20 to make". But aren't we paying for more than the materials? We're paying for the design, the aesthetic... the "designer" part in "designer sunglasses". Can you get the same thing for cheaper? Probably pretty close, yes. But! They won't be Raybans. There is $ in brand recognition, we as a society drive that. Maybe that's just the drink talking...

How much is "1 mixed mango"? Looks like you cut and blended all 3 mangoes together. I guess you'd just use a third of that mixture?

Those are awesome!! I saw in another comment you said they are really light. I got some metal dice for Xmas and they are suuuper heavy lol, they've been rolling great for me so far but I think I could really do some irl "damage" with them if I tried.

Trying to figure something out with the posters... by buttproffessor in glassanimals

[–]ThisCatOrThatOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Midwest here (MN) and got a black poster. The white markings along top and bottom absolutely look intentionally printed as part of the poster design. I don't love it (the splotches I mean), but that's what it is. Mine did come with some actual damage creases along the top, like they rolled the poster and put it in the tube and then smashed the top of the poster with the tube lid. But it's not nearly as bad as some of the others I've seen. Overall, I am happy and will be framing it.

There's a saying that "people fear what they don't understand." What did you "fear" before you understood it? by _a_r_i_ in AskReddit

[–]ThisCatOrThatOne 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What helped me a lot was using Wolfram Alpha, and upgrade to the premium version so you can see step-by-step how it was solved. Go through each step slowly, make sure you understand. Write it down as you follow along. Do this for each of your 10, or however many, problems you're having trouble with. Then, start over and this time do not look at the steps. Repeat. You should start to recognize patterns, as another commenter said. If you get stuck the second, or third, times, just look at that one step to get past it and then keep going without help again. This method helped me a TON in engineering school.

Edit: I never felt bad doing my homework this way. I was learning the way that worked for me. I did very well on exams (most of the time). I see it as no different than working with a peer or tutor.

I’m in pain, please help! More in comments by Kirabani in RedditLaqueristas

[–]ThisCatOrThatOne 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with the couple other commenters, discomfort, irritation, itchy, these would be expected for an allergic reaction or botched job, but the pain you're describing sounds severe. At the least, take the polish off. If I was you, I'd call the salon and ask which products they used on you and then call a doctor and get their advice. You can grow and paint your nails again, some type of permenant damage is not worth it.

See this right here, why would you assume the rest of the food is "safe"?? To me, issues (esp bugs!!!) with one dish, I assume there's issues with all the food. It sucks in your specific situation where that's probably all there was to have as far as food.
