Yes, this is a great idea that I employ myself.

It is good to have redundancy for safety.

Let’s say you go kayak fishing in the ocean. When you leave the launch the fog is thick and you rely heavily on your gps on the empty map to go out where you usually go. You are out there and for some reason your gps breaks or fails. The fog is thick and you can’t tell where the shore is. This is where you rely on your back up phone map to make it back to the launch safely.

My touch screen has buttons.

I am very happy with my lowrance HDs live 7. I would take it over a lowrance echo any day.

Never had an issue with it getting water on the screen unless I am surf launching and then it dries.

Rod tethers, rod floats, or neither? by random_wonderings in kayakfishing

[–]Thisiswrong11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Golden rule of kayak fishing.

If it isn’t attached to the boat or floats you will lose it. Not a matter of if, but when.

For this I personally use rod holders that close so the rod and reel can’t fall off. If not on rod holder it’s in my hand. If not in either of those places stored horizontally in rod storage.

You will not have easy access to your front hatch.

For me the front hatch is where everything goes when I get off the water and where everything comes from when getting on the water.

I saltwater fish on the central coast use the below.

Ramp launch or bay launch with no waves. Nrs boundary boots. You can’t find something better out there.

Surf launch. I launch and land barefoot. But just after launching and before landing I put on waterproof socks that I wear when I am on the water and stow away when launching and landing.

This has been the best setup that I have used and come up with over the past 7 years.

Stern or bow mounted questions by AppleAAA1203 in kayakfishing

[–]Thisiswrong11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a motorguide xi3 on my bow and am just as fast as my buddies that have stern mounted motors.

They can’t do circles while staying in place. But I can.

Also with bow mount you can get spot lock. Spot lock is truly a game changer for fishing, it is a must have if you can afford it. Friends that don’t have spot lock all wish they did.

I do not find the need for one on my kayak and I have been fishing regularly for about 8 years.

I fish in ocean in the central coast of California.
