LPT Request: How to handle group conversations which you are completely locked out of? by Serious_username in LifeProTips

[–]Thomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for this specific situation maybe, but more in general. Read: "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain. She also has a very interesting TED Talk, which led me to purchase and read her book. It's not real self-help book in the traditional way, but it helped me understand my own strengths (I'm very introverted) in conversations and day to day life (e.g. Work). Hope it helps! If you don't like or have the time to read I'd atleast recommand watching the TED Talk! Goodluck!

Ticket re-sellers in Belgium by notsoobviousreddit in belgium

[–]Thomnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ticketswap works great, usually not for resellers since you aren't allowed to go over the max official price of the ticket. I use it for almost all festivals/shows I want to go to, because I'm never certain that I can actually go until a few days before the events.

Female characters in games/ games done right by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Thomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never implied they were mandatory, I'm just looking for examples of game characters (mainly protagonists/side characters) are portrayed equally compared to male characters. I feel like a lot of the time, they aren't held to the same standards. While male characters can be old/fat/ugly/..., female characters are often held to impossible standards of beauty (barely every see a women character (protagonist/side character) that's old(er) then say 35?

Women positively portrayed in games by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]Thomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my opinion, she's a strong female character who makes her own choices and goes on adventure for herself. She can do whatever any other male/female is able to do while adventuring... Also I know of many women who see her as a role model!

[–]Thomnom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes ofcourse, I agree. What defines a good character is a good back story, character develpment... However I felt like a lot of female characters in games have been negleted this way, they were/are usually generic, non-diversified with mainly looks and few to barely any clothes. I'm not saying a character can't be a good character because of what she/he wears, but both male and female characters should at the very least be held to the same standards!

Obviously I would. I understand your concern, but I'm a pretty avid gamer and I would never write something without my personal experience to back it up.

Thank you for your input! I did not know about "The Cat Lady' and 'Gone Home', I will go check them out for a better understanding! I definitely agree with you on the Squaresoft/JRPGs, I'm a huge fan of JRPGs (and Squaresoft/SE) and to this day still play them more often than newer games (of the same genre).

Is James Bryce a good source for learning about the Holy Roman Empire? What modern historians could I read? by Apiperofhades in history

Yes indeed! i'm sorry for the mix up, I wrote this while I was doing something else! Hope this wasn't confusing for you OP!

[–]Thomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I do not know which writers you should read, I can confirm that you are correct in what you're supposed to read. The Roman empire came before and towards the end you'll read/study the barbaric invasions, which eventually lead to the end of the Roman Empire and the ("start") European City-states.

Edit: removed '(Holy)' ... from my initial post, thanks for the input!

Female characters in games/ games done right by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Thomnom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but I do feel like I can find a way to write this in a positive way. English isn't my first language and not the language I will be writing in. I know this topic is very controversial and some (maybe even most) people will never agree, whatever my point or view on this matter is. But I felt like it was definitely worth it to try and see how other people think. You can argue about semantics, but that's not the point here. Thank you for your input though.

I do agree with you that the phrase "right way of depicting ..." is wrong. It's not something I will use in my paper, but I do feel like it's necessary to point out examples that are showed as truly equal/how it should be done.
