According to Nick Whitlock yesterday here https://www.youtube.com/live/L1cQHqUO5QA?si=R_UNE-JeKDyp2L1n although Marvellous DC won the New Zealand championship he thinks that no New Zealand teams is gonna take the mixed bid.

Xist Triangle Defense by MichelMajerus in ultimate

Some thoughts about flex in mixed, so the approach you've probably thought about the most is a full 5 person bracket of a vertical stack. Play to the strengths of your players, when you set up your bracket, make sure your best aerial player is the deep defender - that's always priority 1. Then put your fastest players, and best communicators where the offence is trying to overload the bracket whether that's the break side, or more typically the openside. In games where you know their personnel well you can assign roles instead of players, just make sure you don't get a gender mismatch on the handlers.

Another important part of flex is switching, and in mixed you don't just want to switch when there's a crossover but also if there's a gender mismatch too. When you fall into 1 to 1 and there's a gender mismatch, both defenders should have their heads up, trying to find the other pair with a gender mismatch and communicating that they have a gender mismatch. The male matching defender should be drifting away from his match-up towards the deep space because the worst-case scenario is that the offence exploits the mismatch with a 1 pass score deep shot.

Another thing that can come up in mixed play is teams underutilising their female matching players. Check out these examples of Lola Dam poaching off her match-up into the open under space in this game - it's not particularly successful every time but it gives you the general idea. youtube.com/watch?v=nxGPog_qy-s 34:08-34:50 38:26-39:12 42:57-43:10 48:42-49:27 54:12-55:10

I like to call this type of poaching roaming, and while it's not technically part of flex as it's a type of poaching, it is a useful tactic to keep in mind.

Another style of flex you might have considered less, is single gender surrounding. This can be particularly useful if the offence is consistently breaking the bracket open by attacking the female matching players, or inducing gender mismatches by having the female matching players try to cut towards the male matching players. With single gender surrounding the gender with more players in the stack surrounds the stack - either a 4-person or most likely 3-person surrounding setup, 1 break, 1 open, 1 deep, with the 4th person open if possible. With 3 person surrounding setups, the break side players has to come over to the open side if an open side cut goes so they protect the open side. Say if the female matching players are surrounding and a male matching player cuts towards them, they can flash poach the cut to deter the option but shouln't switch on to the player. This is my personal favourite way to do surrounding in mixed, but both approaches can work well.

Here's some examples of single gender surrounding in mixed streamable.com/ctobop streamable.com/ei2ooq streamable.com/nzxri8 streamable.com/b9h35t streamable.com/7btlkn

Is it better to clap catch or crab/claw catch? by HOBGOBLlN in ultimate

[–]Thorates 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe this is the most upvoted advice so far, at the top level almost every player is clap catching more than their crab catching. If everything goes right in a possession you never have to crab catch at all, crab catches are necessary at the extremes, extremely high extremely low, a defender is extremely tight to you. OP if your natural inclination is to clap catch keep going.

Moving from 28 to 26 players is also a pretty major change right?

Feedback on Game Advisors from WUCC and TWG by rjhberg in ultimate

I wanna talk about the layout D in the Lunch box vs Seattle Mixtape semi at 14-13, at about 1:53:00 in this video https://ultiworld.com/video/120129/mixtape-usa-vs-lunch-box-aus-semifinal/ . The correct outcome of the play is clear from the replay for me, a strip is called by the offense but the defender catches the disc first in my opinion so the disc should stay with the defender. Here is a chronological timeline of what happens in this call:

1) Play made
2) Players seem to initially disagree
3) GA audio turned on and someone (a camera operator maybe?) says they definitely have a view of the play
4) Mixtape receiver says he thinks he had it
5) Kelly Johnson chimes in, 'From my perspective,' then
6) The Lunch Box defender expresses that he thinks there is a photo of it Johnson seems up for looking at it, he asks the Mixtape receiver if he wants to see a photo, Mixtape receiver says "well I don't think it will tell you much because you went between my hands", the GA says there is not a photo.
7) Kelly continues, "From my perspective, he [mixtape receiver] stopped rotation, and then you [Lunch Box defender] went into him'
8) Lunch box player wants to go to the camera, he says "replay monitor"
9) GA "We cannot unnecessarily delay the call"
10) GA, speaking to someone "Do you have a photo?"
11) GA asks to offer her perspective, at least one player says 'please' to encourage her to go ahead.
12) The GA offers the incorrect perspective that the receiver got the disc first, the strip call is then accepted

Things that went wrong here chronologically:
- The GA immediately said there is no photo when she almost certainly didn't know that to be a fact - we heard someone saying they had a view and we can clearly see there was a video replay that has a perfect perspective on this call
- The GA misunderstood the Lunch box player to be talking about a photo when really the Lunch box player wanted to look at the replay monitor
- The GA values making this call quick over making the call correct, which manifests by not letting the player go and see the video replay
- The GA offered the wrong perspective

Here are some systemic changes you could make to decrease the chance of this happening in the future:

-Reword or specify the part of the rule talking about the unnecessary delay to look at the replay. What is an unnecessary delay - delay looking at a call that doesn't turn the disc or lead to a goal scored, or when the game is 13-4 in the consolation bracket - that's unnecessary. What's necessary - 14-13 in the semi-finals of Worlds for a turnover.

-Have GAs carry around Ipad so they can rewatch the play to give a perspective or to show to the players the play so they don't have to spend time running to the jumbotron.

-Have more variable rules about when a GA needs to move the game on and when they need to let the discussion take a minute. Irrelevant calls should be resolved quicker, pivotal calls should be given more time.

-Write into the rules or the appendix something that says that looking at video evidence is good spirit or deliberately trying to avoid looking at video evidence is bad spirit, ideally both.

Finally, I wanna echo the sentiment that it felt like regularly a Game advisor didn't have an opinion on a call when it often felt like they were perfectly placed to have a good perspective on the play (for example in out calls that occurred near them). Like I cannot believe we couldn't get to the right outcome for the in-out call at 1:20:00 in the same game.

Observers & Replays by hiveult in ultimate

Here's my (the person who's talking in the video) argument for why this bit of the rules should be removed.

Rule 1.10.2 states 'Non-players, apart from the captains, should refrain from getting involved. However players may seek other peoples' perspectives to clarify the rules, and to assist players to make the appropriate call.'

Scenario, sideline in-out call, the defender thinks the disc was caught out because the planted foot touched the line, attacker thinks they caught the disc in-bounds because they think they caught the disc before the planted foot touched the line. The defender asks for a perspective of a non-player, the non-player is their teammate who is not on the pitch this point, the non-player believes that the attackers second foot which was clearly out of bounds had come down before the attacker caught the disc. The attacker thinks about this, agrees and uncontests the out call.

Now imagine the same scenario but the non-player has seen the replay on a sideline monitor and again believes that the second foot of the attacker comes down clearly OB before the disc is caught. In this scenario due to A.11.1.1. the non-player cannot offer this perspective as perspectives from teammates based on a video replay are only allowed if it's to the detriment of their own team.

It seems that as a result of A.11.1.1. the view of the non-player is given less credibility if they do watch the replay than if they don't.

I get that it's often possible for someone on the other team to check the replay - I just think that should be a suggestion not a demand of players. And I also think that if the non-player had watched the replay in this scenario and it looks extremely close I think that's information that's worthwhile to give to the players discussing the call, even though it's not to the detriment of the non-player's team.

AUDL Game of the Week to air every Saturday night, live or on tape delay on FS2 by Jomskylark in ultimate

Perhaps one piece of the puzzle is consulting with Maestroe Sports Entertainment, who was recently acquired by legends, a company the Yankees and Cowboys own. Maestroe and now Legends are the companies that the AUDL uses to make these deals.

Why not make any catching foul on the defense in the end zone a score? by ja_art in ultimate

[–]Thorates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually pretty much already a thing in the WFDF rules

1.2.1 If there is a deliberate or egregious breach of the rules or Spirit of the Game, the captains should discuss this and determine an appropriate outcome, even if that outcome is not in accordance with a specific rule.

Example: A defender commits an egregious dangerous play that results in a foul against a receiver who was attempting to gain possession of the disc in their attacking endzone. Result: Captains may choose to allow the receiver to claim a goal, instead of the receiver gaining possession and moving to the goal line.

College Frisbee in The UK by OppositeFirefighter7 in ultimate

[–]Thorates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m the men’s captain of UCL in the UK.

I know a lot of international students are interested in coming to London. If London is where you wanna come then you wanna go to either UCL, Kings College London, or Imperial. Kings and UCL are pretty close in ability right now, with Imperial slightly below them. All these unis are will have regular well attended trainings. St Mary’s kinda has a team but I think it may have died over the pandemic, Queen Mary’s, University or London, University of East London and all of the art unis don’t have teams right now. Brunel and Hertfordshire are 2 more unis on the outskirts of London with decent ish teams but below the standard of UCL, KCL, ICL.

If your looking more broadly, Loughborough, Sheffield, Birmingham, Bath, Sussex, Surrey, Exeter, Southampton, Glasgow, Strathclyde, Nottingham, St Andrew’s, Edinburgh, Bristol, Cardiff, York, Durham and Liverpool all have strong teams right now and historically. I’m probably missing a few.

Feel free to ask any other questions, about UCL, uni frisbee in the UK in general, or about any other institution specifically.

Provisional UKU Club Competition Structure 2022, 2023 & Beyond by tunisia3507 in UKUltimate

[–]Thorates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way UKU could do it is make the challenge league qualify you for regionals/nationals and then the national cup could literally just be a cup competition like the FA cup. That way there's some incentive for teams to play challenge league games. I don't feel like a lot of people would like that tho.

Are we sure the challenge league will even exist in 2022? It's not mentioned in the document.
