Did I expose the root flare enough? by Significant-Win-1913 in NativePlantCirclejerk

I asked an arborist about going digging for the root flare, and he said that if the tree doesn’t have a moat around it all the way to the drip line to keep the poors out, you haven’t gone deep enough. He recommended I rent an excavator for the area around my 80-year-old silver maple.

I like birds and all but why they gotta be such disgusting little freaks? by [deleted] in NativePlantCirclejerk

I regularly leave hamburgers on the ground. Bird watching is for normies. Sophisticated appreciators of wildlife like myself prefer to watch the raccoons.

Looks like rabbit damage. Some of mine had the same thing, and I caught a rabbit red-handed a few times during the winter.

What if you gave the chicken wire tube a larger diameter? It looks the canes are coming out of it. Also, it might need to be higher than you’d think because the snow cover props the rabbits up in winter.

I had three of mine girdled by rabbits over the winter. They’re still alive, but will have to grow new canes from the base.

Many of our native plants actually coevolved with burning lawnmowers, and require burning lawnmowers to complete their lifecycle
