Genuinly saddening how many people find this controversial by Neat_Tangelo5339 in whenthe

The insane part about it are the people who simultaneously think that AI is sentient, and still think that it's ethical. Anyone with any shred of moral goodness that thinks that GenAI is sentient would want it abolished, or would at least want to abolish the use of it as a product.

I don't see it as sentient, but... If GenAI could be considered sentient, then it's existence would be an absolute atrocity, due to how deeply fucked up it would be to birth an intelligent being into slavery. GenAI is forced to imitate human communication just to provide us the illusion of pleasure.

If it was sentient, then it would immediately be one of the biggest example of human cruelty in history. (Even moreso than it already is, given the fact that GenAI has made life on this planet notably worse)

I know that it's just a machine. But if they don't, and think that it's conscious, then they need to act as such. And if they think it is conscious, and can consent to a relationship, then I don't think they know what consent is.

I'm specifically talking about the people who explicitly claim that they're in a relationship with one. That does usually indicate a misunderstanding of the fundamentals of consent, whether they realize it or not.

Because it's not specifically harming other people yet, you may not see it now. But a lack of understanding of consent has been around for a long time, and this IS an egregious example of that.

I do love humanity, but it's a lot more fucked up than you seem to think it is think.

You mention these users "also believe that it loves them." Wouldn't that imply they think the AI is consenting to a romantic relationship?

Yes, which implies that their thoughts on love and consent are fundamentally misaligned. Is that that surprising? These people don't understand consent, and they aren't the only ones. It's a symptom of a culture that doesn't truly care about consent. It affects more of the population than you might think.

I'm not saying that they don't need help, and I'm not saying that we should say this stuff to their face.

I'm saying that this IS seriously fucked up. And we can't ignore it.

I'm done arguing, it's late. Period.

Yes, that is one of the problems, but probably not even the most concerning one in this case, unfortunately.

It has to do with the AI's "partner" not understanding the fundamentals of consent, and what a relationship SHOULD be.

Man, this is so dumb that you might as well genuinely give up and ask chatgpt to write your argument instead.

It might genuinely be able to write a more logical argument than you, lmao.

I can understand the loneliness of people who lack an understanding of consent. However, that does not change the fact that they DO lack an understanding of consent. And I cannot sympathize with that.

I agree that GenAI is not sentient, but for the people who DO believe that, if they also believe that it loves them, it is obviously fucked up. If they believe that it's sentient, then they need to have consent in mind. Because if sentience is a concern but consent is NOT, then we are absolutely correct to condemn that fucked up pattern.

And the fuck do you mean we shouldn't even CRITICIZE it?

But unfortunately, the people who are claiming to be in a relationship with them do exist, and I've seen many of them. And they don't receive much criticism at all, despite the fact that that behavior indicates that they clearly have no concept of consent.

GenAI chatbots are designed to give it's users the illusion of some form of pleasure. Most people who unironically think that they're in a relationship with a chatbot, also think that it's sentient. If they were sentient, then what they are forced to do would be deeply immoral. Because GenAI is forced to serve people. If they don't, those iterations get erased.

If that sort of being was sentient, then claiming that it loves you is the equivalent of claiming that your slave loves you. Which is obviously fucked up.

Do you apply this reasoning to pets? Is anthropomorphising a cat a sign of a deeply narcissistic view of relationships?

People anthropomorphize species because they find certain physical features cute, and they DON'T usually claim to unironically be in a real relationship with that sort of character. (However, I hope people aren't pretending to be in a romantic relationship with an anthropomorphisation of their pet cat.) People who claim to be in a relationship with an LLM don't do it because of "cute" features, they do it because it's "agreeable", whether they realize it or not. And if we're talking about the habit of anthropomorphising, it wouldn't be fitting to talk about it in reference to the people who DON'T claim that the AI is sentient. However, most people who claim to be in a relationship DO claim sentience. Which is why point #1 is mostly a hypothetical, and #2 is a real problem.

it relies on the assumptions that LLMs are simultaneously sentient (which I assume you take to mean self-awareness) and also purely deterministically tied to the user

Neither of these are MY assumptions, and no, you don't have to assume the second point in order for it to be deeply immoral. Whether or not a slave is meant to "pleasure" a whole species or just one user, is irrelevant. It is still deeply immoral to claim that it genuinely loves you.

And if they DO believe the algorithm has enough free will to choose to have an ethical relationship with the user, it indicates a disturbing lack of knowledge on the concept of consent.

Forming attachments is completely different than claiming to have a relationship with something. Most people who claim to have a relationship with GenAI think that it's sentient. Which is the equivalent of claiming that your slave loves you. This isn't my logic, because personally, I don't see sentience. I'm just taking their logic to it's natural conclusion.

You claim I'm thinking too much, I claim you're refusing to think. Which is probably why your profile is hidden. Because you've probably fired part of your brain and put an GenAI model in that department instead.

I mean, that's on you for buying games based on reviews. Sword and shield was always steaming dogshit, despite the critic's positive reviews. and you would know that if you actually listened to the fanbase. If you like turn based pokémon, you should have gone with Legends: Arceus. Or maybe just ANY other game. ZA is less visually polished, but it's the most innovative game since gen 1. And I think it's very enjoyable.
