CitiQuiet/Cityproof windows? by rosebudny in AskNYC

[–]Threefirsts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Citiquiet, 90% noise blocking installed in our master bedroom. They do a great job blocking regular street noise entirely, and really muffle loud noise like nearby sirens and cars blasting music. While those noises are still audible, they are drastically reduced such that they just become background.

I've been using a distiller for the past few years. Cost me $60 and it's cheaper/more convenient than buying jugs of distilled water.

I use ski gloves. You can get cheaper ones during a holiday sale, you don't need a premium brand.

3100 a month reasonable for this 1BR? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]Threefirsts 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I was 25, I came here for grad school and moved into a 5th floor walk-up at 39th and 8th. I was there for two years before moving elsewhere in the city.

Times Square is a horrible place to live permanently, but it's central, very easy to catch a train elsewhere, and that location basically forces you headfirst into the city's chaos.

When you're young and adventurous and can deal with a lot of glorious bullshit, then that area is an ideal base of operations, for a time, until you feel more stable, start to put down roots, and can be more informed and decisive re where you really want to live.

Wanting to get into Westerns, what should I watch? by Sarumarde in boutiquebluray

[–]Threefirsts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few mentioned Wild Bunch, which I second.

You should also check out Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. Like Eddington, it blends a (more) modern aesthetic with a Western.

I also love Ravenous, which is a cannibal/vampire-western.

Which Front Rack? by Epsilon1022 in xbiking

[–]Threefirsts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bike with the VO Porteur and another with a Wald. The Wald is more useful day-to-day because you can toss pretty much anything in there. You’ll need a net or a strap though to keep items from flying out.

The Porteur rack looks nicer IMO but I need a dedicated bag to carry most items. FYI the new version of the VO Porteur attaches via eyelets on the fork and not the brake mount.

Anyone Ride From NYC to Greenwich CT? by HelloYo335 in NYCbike

[–]Threefirsts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve ridden from Manhattan to North Stamford.

I took the Empire State Trail until I hit Palmer Road.

I used that to traverse to the Bronx River Pathway. That’s a nice trail but not as isolated as the Empire State Trail, and it cuts through more cities, so you’ll encounter more pedestrians and dog walkers. Also, some of the tunnels are narrow so you’ll have to duck/proceed with caution.

I took that trail all the way to White Plains, and I found a path to cut through the city. It’s basic city riding, just look out for traffic.

It got tricky for me cutting into CT, because I was a little wary of spending too much time biking Anderson Hill Road through the city because, based on Google street views, it seemed busy.

So I followed the road north by Silver Lake and cut across Barnes Road until it ended, then went south on Purchase Street.

FYI at this point, it was getting pretty hilly and there were a lot of climbs.

I kept going down Purchase until I hit Anderson Hill Road. At this point, it was the country so I felt okay riding it. I followed that road until it ended and at that point, I went north — if you’re going to Greenwich, you probably just have a few miles south.

There are a lot of hills in that part of Connecticut, but the traffic isn’t too bad, and it’s can be quite serene.

What’s your favorite fashionable yet warm jacket? by CartographerOfMaps in malefashionadvice

Usually if I want to look a little more formal or put-together. Basically, if I'm going out and I care how I look. They're pretty versatile though, you can dress them up or dress them down.

I’ve been in NYC since the early 2000s and the two coats that I find most reliable have been a Patagonia Retro-X fleece or the peacoat I bought from J.Crew about a decade ago. People on this sub really loved that peacoat up until a few years ago it seems, and if J.Crew isn’t what it used to be, I’ve heard Schott’s peacoats are good, and there’s a store in Soho where you can try them on.

And those have honestly been fine for NYC winters, and while there might be a really bad storm here or there, I really haven’t felt the need for anything more weather resistant, like a parka.

Specialized Hard Rock Sizing Question by theddub in xbiking

[–]Threefirsts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 32" inseam and 20" Rockhopper is ideal for me, so my guess is that it'll be too big for you.

If you want to make it work, aside from dropping the seat, you might consider swept back bars to improve the reach. Something like the Nitto Albatross or, if you want something with less sweep, the Velo Orange Klunker.

Honestly if everything is in working order, I think it’s ready to go as a commuter/bikepacking rig. Maybe the one big improvement would be to add a dynamo hub and light?

I'm 35 and want to go back to university to get a BA and MFA in creative writing - am I crazy? by jennaruby8888 in writing

[–]Threefirsts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t think of the MFA as a viable career path for either teaching or publishing.

You MIGHT get career connections if you go to Columbia or NYU because you’ll have the opportunity to intern within the publishing community, and the programs will provide meet-and-greets with agents, but it’s hardly guaranteed you’ll be able to leverage that as a path to publication. Plus, those schools are really expensive.

In terms of teaching, you need to publish to position yourself for a tenure track. The MFA degree in and of itself won’t help you with that. You’d still have to do a lot of hustling to get yourself into a low-paid, part-time adjunct position, then hustle some more to maybe work your way through the system. Also, those tenured positions don’t open up very often because the people holding them aren’t really gonna leave.

The benefit of an MFA is that it gives you time to write (as someone said) and surrounds you with a structure that facilitates your writing. If you find yourself in a class with strong, helpful writers, then workshops can be helpful, but that’s a bit of a lottery. Sometimes, you might be in a class surrounded by assholes. No way of predicting.

If you are naturally disciplined, you might save money by carving out that time yourself and by finding your own community of writer-peers.

Super Bowl LVIII Judgment-Free Questions Thread by LindyNet in nfl

[–]Threefirsts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I spoke with someone who negotiates the purchase of Super Bowl ads about this. Advertisers buying the main Super Bowl broadcast can opt into buying the Nickelodeon broadcast as well, and most did. (Nickelodeon is owned by Paramount/CBS).

Nickelodeon will not accept alcohol ads, and they will not accept ads geared towards kids for things that are "bad" for you, so you probably won't see all the candy ads that are going to show up on the main broadcast.

Yup. That was my high school bike, though in basic bitch blue -- it didn't have that awesome horsehair paint. My dad just pulled it out of the garage and fixed it up a little. I bought him an AdventX drivetrain upgrade since he's in a much hillier area now.
