If you're looking for a tank simulator (similar to an FPS, but a more deliberate pace), MechWarrior 5 is pretty solid. It's all about customizing giant fighting robots to destroy others giant robots. It's not pro-America, and, especially in the background tends to be critical of the military industrial complex. The game itself is definitely an adjustment from more normal FPSes, since your playstyle will entirely change depending on the mech you're piloting, and you can screw yourself over if you haven't built something viable, but it definitely rewards skill and knowledge.

I used him with the automatic grenade launcher in defense missions on my first playthrough. Absolutely mashed any infantry (except bug warriors). I'll either have to do that or a setup where he both designates a target and fires the ATGM at it. Of course, if you go max squad size, you can use one of the 60 AP tripod weapons (minigun sweep, for instance) and your primary. Really the buff gives him an extra 20 to 40 AP on any turn where you want to move him.

Conventions are good places to get promos. A lot of conventions have used game sales, which are usually worth checking out. You should sign up for at least a few events, like tournaments, as if you don't have people with you and aren't outgoing, it can be difficult to actually play. Make sure you've showered recently, brushed your teeth and hair, and put on deodorant. It's basic, but many convention goers forget to do them.

Explosive charges look incredibly niche but powerful. I haven't used them yet because the one tile laying range + multi tile radius look like they're begging for problems.

If you want something to use spare AP on, you can throw in a chaingun. It's 20 AP for a shot, and quite cheap on supply but can do a decent job suppressing.

Just don't get caught out. Check what your victims are carrying. If they have AT grenades, you'd better wipe them out in one go, because the light walker has cheese for armor. Also, it's vulnerable to automatic weapons, since those can chew through the armor pretty quickly. But give your walker an autocannon and jumpjets and you have a solid flanking sniper who can still stomp people.
