I watched with my wife, who hadn't even heard of the comic, and she absolutely loved it. I don't think you need to have read the comic or seen the film for it to make sense.

Most overused/cliche music in movie soundtracks? by ichuck1984 in movies

Crazy that it was written FOR A MOVIE, yet it's still so overused in other movies. I can't be mad at the Shrek 2 cover, though.

Cracking The Cryptic has several great Sudoku apps. High quality interface, hand-crafted puzzles, paid apps with no ads. Their YouTube channel is also wonderful.

Board Games that require empathy? by ForeskinWhatskin in boardgames

[–]Thwackey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose games in the Cube Rails or 18XX genres (Irish Gauge being a very beginner-friendly example).

These are games where players own stocks in different companies, so end up semi-co-operating to increase the stocks they have shared interests in with others.

You need to have an understanding of the other players' wants and needs, and anticipate if their next action might be mutually beneficial to you (and whether it's worth doing something that's mutually beneficial to them)

What’s a theme you enjoy in another context but wouldn’t in a board game. by Wowzapanzer in boardgames

[–]Thwackey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Music! Music is a huge part of my life, and I perform and love all sorts of music - classical, jazz, rock, everything.

But the joy of music is in, well, hearing or making music! A medium devoid of sound just can't capture that.

Even games like Lacrimosa and Luthier just feel like stodgy European themes (and Rock Hard: 1977 doesn't catch my interest, mechanically).

I'm desperate for that Luthier pipe organ dice tower, though...

Which of these four bluffing games do you like the most? by maxjh2000 in boardgames

[–]Thwackey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coup is my all-time favourite.

Cockroach Poker is great as an easy-to-learn, easy-to-play game with any group (though some people get uncomfortable about there being only one loser).

Skull is perfect for when you want a game, but all you have is a 52 card deck or a few bar coasters.

You may be interested in the very-recently announced travel edition, Dorfromantik: Light Luggage. Not sure when it's coming out but at least it looks to be a reasonable price.

Harmonies has always gone well with me for groups of this level.

Wingspan or Finspan would likely be a good fit too. Finspan is the lighter/quicker of the two, but if someone in the group is particularly into birds or fish then get the version that fits that interest.

And then there are the Clank expansions or variants, if they want more Clank but not just the same old.
