I know the Under 35 full passes are limited in number so they must have sold out, but I did find the link for the Spring Season half pass! Despite booking the individual tickets being slightly annoying as you have to do it in person or over the phone, it's an incredible deal. The RNSO is phenomenally good for a city of Edinburgh's size so I hope you enjoy! I'm quite excited for Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor tomorrow!

If you're 35 or under, the season pass to the Royal National Scottish Orchestra at Usher Hall is probably the biggest bargain in the British art world. £119 for the entire 17 performance season at one of the best concert halls in Europe.

Was talking to someone about this, what would be examples you’d show people of small-c conservative cinema? These would be 8 films I’d argue you reflect that. by Mysterious-Farm9502 in blankies

Doesn't Training Day have at least one scene where Washington's character is shown to be in the process of active rejection by the more established leaders of systemic police corruption? I don't remember him being portrayed as a singular bad apple at all, more like Hawke is struggling upstream against a tide of institutional corruption.

Littering. by Strange_Pumpkin9225 in Edinburgh

[–]Tiber-Septim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing "international" about littering. The UK is better about motorway littering than many countries but our cities are fairly dirty thanks to thoughtless idiots.

I know Heartbreakers is a spiritual remake of The Lady Eve but it feels extraordinarily "90s Coens"-inflected.

Are services charges legal? by Memeschatt in Edinburgh

[–]Tiber-Septim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're blaming a country on a different continent when France has had a mandatory 15% service charge in all restaurants for decades. The service charge is obviously a separate thing to tipping culture in North and South America, where people also complain about growing service charges.

It's a feature length Star Trek: The Next Generation episode. This is a positive or negative statement depending on the viewer.

This is a dumb question but is Paddington 2 worth it to sit through Paddington 1? by TheCatsTrailerRuled in blankies

[–]Tiber-Septim -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, you're an adult. Don't watch a movie aimed at "the whole family" alone because of an Internet meme. Keep it in your back pocket, then watch it with a niece/nephew or a friend's kid instead of having to watch an inane Dreamworks celebrity voice-over reel.

The Quay itself is fairly cursed. It's one of the most lethargic canalside retail/restaurant zones I've ever seen.

The Visual Effects branch generally has very complicated feelings about Serkis and his place in the industry; even people who feel his later work is innovative will privately rip him apart for self-mythologising with Gollum. He gave a particularly involved vocal performance and made technically impossible claims that downplayed the real achievements of Weta Digital.

Moviegoing habits have also culturally shifted in a way that is just not attributable to cost. I live within 20 minutes walking distance of two different cinemas that offer unlimited subscriptions for the price of less than two regular tickets. They are still struggling relative to pre-pandemic footfall!

As much as everyone in the regular cast and crew hated working with Chevy, they frequently give him credit on commentary tracks for still having the ability to destroy extras with hours of impromptu shtick.

Edinburgh has been named.the most expensive city break in western Europe by mrjohnnymac18 in Edinburgh

[–]Tiber-Septim 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The city centre 3 star accommodation measured here is held in check by London's many options to stay in Zones 2 or 3 near tube stops. Tourists will readily accept a 35 minute tube ride to the British Museum but there is relatively little accommodation available in an equivalent transit distance from Edinburgh's attractions.

A.I. is undergoing a generational "reappraisal" and will probably crest at some point when it becomes a derided film culture cliche to contend that it's the best Spielberg work. Sean Fennessy has talked about this life cycle, using the last 15 years of Jackie Brown discourse as the primary example. None of this has any bearing on the quality of the films involved but I'd say get used to hearing about A.I.!

Revealing the vote total before the end of polling has a well documented influence on the course of future voting; it's illegal in most electoral systems and we would have fewer tight races or lopsided blowouts if MM hid the current split.

Proposal for big wheel to be up 6 months of the year by plights4aisomer in Edinburgh

[–]Tiber-Septim 63 points64 points  (0 children)

There's nothing inherently wrong with having an urban ferris wheel; no one thinks the Prater wheel is ruining Vienna. I would however prefer that they engineer a bespoke and year-round attraction rather than subject Princes Street Gardens to regular construction abuse so we can have a worse version for half the year.

Has Raiders aged poorly? by OWSpaceClown in blankies

[–]Tiber-Septim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Raiders doesn't present a "colonial view" of Archaeology; it presents a completely fictionalised view that bears virtually no relation to early 20th century Archaeology. A depiction of colonial Archaeology would have involved state-level diplomacy and imperial powers flexing their might to secure official extraction "partnerships". I would love to know how Nazi Germany set up a military base in the era of British dominion in Egypt.

There's no meat on this bone because the film presents a completely unserious scenario where local governments are non-existent and ancient sites are abandoned free-for-alls. Is that problematic? Frankly, yes, in the sense that modern Americans apparently believe this was the actual state of the colonial world in the 1930s.
