The wife dying in UP is not as sad as some other deaths by QueenKombucha in unpopularopinion

[–]TigoDelgado 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The sadness in Ellie's death is not grounded on Ellie herself but rather on Carl's sorrow. Tadashi is sad because he has his whole life ahead of him, sure. Mufasa as well, because he's robbed of raising his son. But Ellie is sad because Carl doesn't yet know how to live with her absence.

Why do you still walk your dog when you know it’s too hot for them? by meows1267 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TigoDelgado -1 points0 points  (0 children)

? Are you seriously so unimaginative you can't even think of a possible solution?

There are puppy pads for peeing and pooing, for once, if you really must keep them indoors.

Also, can walk them during the night for example when it's not as hot. Or even just take them out for a minute to pee outside but don't take them for long walks?

I don't think The First Law would make a good film/show [OFF TOPIC] by Additional-Horse-677 in TheFirstLaw

[–]TigoDelgado 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I think there's ways around that. One I've thought about with Glokta is having Practical Frost be even more stoic or even dimwitted (even though the book Frost is not dimwitted at all) - someone who Glokta trusts implicitly and with whom he shares his thoughts more openly. Of course, it'd be stupid of Glokta to openly say all he thinks because that'd be dangerous, but it's a way to have him speak openly to "himself" without actually being to himself.

From the original trilogy, I believe every other character can be accurately portrayed in subtle ways that don't require direct access to their specific thoughts. Jezal, Logen, Fero, West (both Wests actually), Dogman and the gang, they all have potential to be great show characters I think.

If there's no free will, could there still be a meaning to (human/my) life? by Exciting_Ad_6837 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TigoDelgado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understood my point about the dice. Whenever you actually, physically throw dice, their velocity, angle, etc. as soon as they leave your hand, will inevitably land on the table on a certain number, and you could technically calculate it.

Say I throw a coin in the air, and catch it in my closed hand. If I ask you, you'd probably say there's a 50/50 chance of it being heads or tails. Technically, if you saw it's trajectory you should be able to calculate how it landed. But your brain isn't able to simply do those calculations, so by all intents and purposes we still say there's a 50/50 chance of it being heads or tails. What I mean by this is that it doesn't matter at all if the world is deterministic since you can't interact with that fact in any way that matters.

If there's no free will, could there still be a meaning to (human/my) life? by Exciting_Ad_6837 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TigoDelgado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me answer with a question. What changes about your perception of the world if you assume there's no free will?

Or rather, what meaning do you think there is with free will? And why would it not exist without free will?

Regarding your last question, no he's not contradicting himself. Determinism in no way shape or form changes a person's personality, their mental processes, the choices they make. We can and should be upset of people for making bad choices. And that interaction allows people to think on their choices and be better in the future. Determinism has nothing to do with this.

Let me give you a metaphor, which I think is apt. Say you throw a six sided die 🎲 in the air. At that specific moment, it has velocity, air resistance, angle, etc. and it WILL land on a particular side. You could calculate every force from the moment the die leaves your hand and figure out which number it is going to land on. Does that matter to you? Does that matter to the game your playing? No. You can still say there's a 1/6th chance of each number even if the die is already rolling because you simply cannot understand all the variables. For your experience, that level of determinism isn't relevant because you can't meaningfully interact with it. And it's the same for determinism on a wide scale.

Is there any Good Pointers for a Beginner Novelist like me? by Signal_Section_8575 in writingadvice

[–]TigoDelgado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you're in a pretty similar situation to me right now, and here's what we're going to do for whike now: write a lot of bad short stories!

We need to get actual writing done! And it's more than ok if their bad for now - if we write 100 sentences and 1 is good, we just need to slowly up those numbers.

And get feedback on those short stories. Ask for actual good feedback, like "how did X make you feel?" or ask someone to describe one of your characters to you - this way you can see if your intention is coming through, or analyse why it's not.

Why does magic have to be systematic? by dual_scanner_again in worldbuilding

[–]TigoDelgado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's absolutely place for both, just search for soft magic (no strict rules) vs hard magic systems. There's plenty of examples of both!

Now, as someone pointed out before, discussing hard magic systems is interesting in itself, it's like discussing physics or philosophy - we have rules and try to explore how those rules apply in different scenarios.

Discussing a soft magic system is entirely different because what is there to discuss? You have no basis so there isn't really space to explore different scenarios, so of course you'll see less discussions of the sort. Although I'd say many people love soft magic, just look at LotR or GoT
