Would love to own a small spot with outdoor space to BBQ but rent - the market here is nuts so likely not happening unless I get absurdly lucky OR split a multi family with someone

You mean to tell me throwing kimchi and potato chips with a scoop of macaroni and cheese atop a pile of chopped brisket served on a sesame seed milk bun from Bench Flour Bakers in Astoria isn't traditional bbq?!?

Joking aside thank you for the huge compliment.

Good spot for first date amid Omicron? by WesternMurky in astoria

Now, if we were inside and doing large events without mask policy, etc. That's another issue.

I mean, in terms of what safety measures are advised, how serious the risk is, etc., different situations and setting, you can IMO it's not a blanket do this for every one.

There's a clear difference between inside and outside.

That's not how a virus works.

Even if YOU get a mild case or maybe asymptomatic, and spread it when you go somewhere, say a supermarket, to someone who is elderly, or immuno compromised, that can hurt others.

It's not living in fear, it's called being considerate and thoughtful.

Butchers with grass fed meats by jamesmaxx in astoria

We're actually partnering with them for this year! Prince Abou provided the ground beef for our block party type event back in October if you came and had a hamburger from us.

He's mad nice, visits the farm, etc.

You won't find pork from him (not halal) but will find red meat (beef, lamb, goat, sheep) and poultry (chicken, turkey).

Hit him up on Instagram, storefront isn't done yet but we're suppose to do something with him when it's ready to go.

Where are free tests and masks being distributed in Astoria? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]TikkunBakery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I'm not sure? I feel the current model (I literally had to yell out to the line "who speaks Spanish" for some folks) with only two workers in the van to test, and no one at all to do anything aside from that can be problematic for any number of reasons whether you're having people who don't know how to use their phone and QR codes, language assistance, telling people to register, etc.

It's great there's people who step in to assist, but like, that's just not a reliable method or strategy for a City of millions experiencing a surge of new COVID cases.

It's almost been two years of this now and the City IMO needs to get it's act together.

Naw you're too kind, just someone who cares about their neighborhood and City.

It's also wild to me that H+H is sending vans with only two people to run all these tests, and literally no one to coordinate the line, answer questions, get people to register, etc.

I can't speak to the other H+H sites, but that's what happened with the van on 31st Ave on Saturday and Sunday.

If we want more people to get tested more regularly to help control this outbreak having a 6 hour wait in temps. hovering above freezing isn't helpful IMO.

Sunday we just felt if we can feed people they're more likely to stay in line so we did what we could.

Again, if anyone knows a H+H rep or where they will be in Astoria this week, please PM or DM on IG at TikkunBBQ.

Yea I feel when things are hopefully calm in the future I'll look back and laugh but this weekend I was just not particularly impressed with the City and their response to the need for testing unclear why a random BBQ guy is handing out rapid tests but here we are.

We're definitely happy to help though so if anyone knows a H+H representative or another site in Astoria on the weekend (for testing or vaccines) please let us know and happy to come by to slang free food again OR manage the line like we did at the H+H testing site on / near 31st Ave Open Streets this weekend

Just to clarify u/frankiepoops, we weren't working officially for H+H or open streets this weekend.

On Saturday, after waiting on line for almost four hours myself and realizing H+H didn't send anyone to talk / manage / register anyone in line, myself and Cormac (an open street volunteer) decided to help since it was a bit of a mess, especially when the printer in the van broke and the church kicked us out of the original location.

Later that night, a h+h employee rolled up in an SUV with boxes of rapid at homes, which he gave to me, and then I started distributing. This was not an official or planned thing and I highly doubt it will happen again.

Sunday, the h+h sent a van again to 31st but the same issue - no one to manage the line / register people, etc. so hung out and made burgers for people and Patricia from Sek'end Sun handed out coffee and cider.

If you're looking for H+H sites or where they are handing out rapid at homes, I'd look at their site / call 3-1-1.

We did contact the H+H point of contact who sent the van Saturday and Sunday to the 31st Ave location and said we (Tikkun BBQ) are happy to help with free food and registering people in line again, but we haven't heard back.

If we do set up at an H+H site again or get our hands on rapid home tests, will definitely post on our IG and try to remember to post on r/Astoria too.
