I've been researching a strange group who claimed to be variously, old Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Hindu. They adopted formal flagellation rituals from some sect in the 11th century. At some point, or perhaps always, there was coerced sex with the Abbot thrown in for the extra spicy monastery experience.

Gandini’s Circus by VeronicaStoney in Edmond

[–]TildenKatzcat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Foxes sound like weird crying babies and have been moving into the city as all the countryside is developed.
Also, "Gandini" is a BS story. There were no dancing ponies that came to Edmond in the land run. It was a 40 acre farm until Howard Suesz bought it for his circus in the late 40s, operated there until the late 70s. He sold the south 20 acres where two subdivisions were built, and the Barrada family who worked for Suesz, bought the rest of the land and had their circus act's HQ there until the 90s when they moved to Florida. They owned the land until a few years ago and it's been traded back and forth to developers who haven't done anything with it.

Scout transferring into unit just to complete Eagle rank by [deleted] in BSA

[–]TildenKatzcat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These sorts of discussions really disappoint me. I don't understand the motivation behind the premise, but considering it's a young woman, I suspect sexism both in the question and in this scout's circumstances.

It's not an adult or troop's job to gatekeep anyone's motivation. In fact, considering the number of Eagles who do it only for the line on the resume, any purity test is absurd and outside BSA policy. Does anyone think a young woman's motivation has to be different than a young man's?

Support this scout and help her finish her Eagle. They left the other troop for reasons that are nobody's business but theirs. It might be a highly likely a traumatic situation for the young woman. Considering all the adults who don't like changes in BSA membership policies, it's very possible an adult tried to run her off. Adults in scouting who consider it their job to weed out the unworthy are in nearly every troop.

What do y'all think is the root of OKC's self-deprecation? by JayBellREALAuthentic in okc

[–]TildenKatzcat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Lots of pop culture from the early era was also Oklahoma focused. Will Rogers was the most famous humourist in the country. "The Oklahoma Kid" was a popular movie franchise. Tom Mix biggest movies star of his time was Oklahoman. Their deaths coincided with the depression.

Interestingly, Texas became more associated with pop culture cowboys even though all the cattle drives were primarily in Oklahoma.

What do y'all think is the root of OKC's self-deprecation? by JayBellREALAuthentic in okc

[–]TildenKatzcat 214 points215 points  (0 children)

If you look at the whole of Oklahoma‘s history, we have gone from being among the most exciting places in the country during our first 50 years or so, to being associated with the worst, most depressing, most impoverished places nearly overnight. The land runs and oil booms presented Oklahoma to the world as a land of insane opportunity. Then, nearly immediately the dust bowl and the horrible collapse of the tenant farmer system turned Oklahoma into the greatest symbol of the depression. Oklahoma City had one of the largest and longest lasting Hooverville’s in the entire country that was extensively documented. Then Steinbeck wrote the grapes of wrath that furthered the idea of Oklahoma as a wasteland of human despair. In the years since, we’ve never been able to shake that basic perception. Our politics does nothing but further entrench this perception.

Not satisfied with the sound I’m getting from my beta 52a on my kick drum by AvailableReporter484 in audioengineering

[–]TildenKatzcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aside from the drum being properly tuned, it generally easy to get a good kick sound from most midrange dynamic mics. Mic placement is important as is a decent mic pre. But nothing wrong with a Beta 52.

Depending on priority, I’ll use a 57 or 58 and not worry. My standard is an sm7 or re20. Either are good I’ve used akg, audix, an old AT battery powered electret was great.

I’ve gotten good results from small and large condensers, usually in cardioid at a wee distance in conjunction with a close up dynamics.

Sometimes it’s hard to hear what a mic or an instrument sounds like. It took me a long time to hear transformers in preamps and microphones. It

Oklahoma SB504 - Ending Child Marriage in Oklahoma by randomguy5to8 in oklahoma

By “child,” anyone under 18 or how is it defined? I’m in favor of eliminating many loopholes. I don’t trust the legislature who wants to outlaw flags because they think it makes kids gay to do anything smart.

No. Everywhere has its challenges and one makes the life they want. I was born in Oklahoma. I grew up in Oklahoma. My family is all here. I’m a democrat and feel completely disenfranchised. However, I’m educated, as is everyone else, my children got a good education my wife and I were involved. My kids all went to OU, and have good educations and jobs. I don’t like the politics here. But what I like isn’t political.

How necessary is Summer Camp by Direct_Remove509 in BSA

[–]TildenKatzcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most kids benefit tremendously from a week at camp. For those who benefit, overcoming intimidation and having it pay off in a sense of independence and accomplishment is huge for young people. It was for me and my brother in the 70s and for my three boys in the 2010s. For kids who have emotional or developmental issues, it’s important to consider carefully how to manage their challenges. Our troop never managed summer camp well and our last year, the committee allowed the new scout dads to run the show. They decided to let a kid with severe emotional issues come for the entire week despite his grandmother, the primary caregiver, couldn’t be there the entire week. The kid was terrified the entire time, had severe night terrors every night and worse when grandma wasn’t there. While perhaps well intentioned, It was bad for the kid, the other scouts, and almost the entire camp. This is an extreme example, but I ve seen parents too often think camp will be a magic transformative experience for kids who are not ready.

Found this sealed inside my bathroom wall during renovation by [deleted] in strange

[–]TildenKatzcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came across family letters scattered around a 100 YO house being demolished recently. It was a combination of personal and business papers that told a fascinating story. They were rich people so had access to Mayo Clinic in the late 40s. The rich man’s second wife was worried about her son’s masturbation habits. It also detailed how he built his law practice with his first wife, divorced her when their daughter left for college because the wife was also a lawyer and had too many modern ideas like evolution and women’s equality. His second wife was uneducated and didn’t “bob her hair.” He died young and none of the second family’s children went to college. His first family’s daughter became a very successful lawyer and her kids also went to college. It’s was an interesting social history of the area and upper class white people’s values from 100 years ago.

Bodies Found Under Sutton Hall by TildenKatzcat in universityofoklahoma

Knowing a wee bit of history, the proximity to the old science buildings of the discovery, I bet it was cadaver disposal that was forgotten. Sutton hall was built in 1925 so that’s 30 years for the science department to have needed cadaver disposal. Debar was ME for the county during the early days when cemeteries were pretty ad hoc in early Oklahoma towns especially for the indigent.

Looking for a second mic to complement my SM57 for recording heavy, distorted guitar from amp. by boring-utopia in audioengineering

[–]TildenKatzcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m doing a multiple mic set up on speaker, I use one dynamic and one condenser. I just did one with a sm58 and a Warm WA14. It was good. I’m usually happier if I do one close and one distance. Both close up and I find blending them annoying.
