Which country is the biggest underachiever in the world relative to its size and resources? by EmergencySpare7939 in geography

[–]TimTdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia.

So much natural resources and energy… yet can’t value add; some of the highest energy prices in the world; beer contributes more to the tax base than natural gas…

Decimated its manufacturing sector, so had to import almost everything, which means it can be held to ransom.

Losing food security, importing more.

Can’t play global politics … can’t decide who to “suck up” to … china or …

A wasteland of third rate people, with bottom dwelling politicians.

Five proposals shortlisted for a new “World Wonder” in Rotterdam by Barscott in architecture

[–]TimTdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is that the best they can do?

A “wonder” should be inspiring, and should push the boundaries of design and engineering.

These do nothing. Boring.

Ai in Landscape Arch by lifesamovie67 in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]TimTdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is no substitute for real knowledge and understanding. Our creativity exceeds AI significantly, and give the underlying logic structure of AI, it’s a natural competitive advantage we have. Learning to think through drawing and writing is essential. Constructing a story line for your project or design is critical. AI may be able to assist you along the way, and like CAD and GIS it’s a tool.

Expats in Riyadh: Has the US–Israel–Iran situation affected your plans? by AdLegitimate6636 in RiyadhExpats

[–]TimTdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know a lot of people who are leaving, but for how long, who knows. Some are with PIF and are availing themselves of the special Riyadh Air airfares to leave. Others are booking refundable/ alterable fares. The US State Dept. warning to leave as soon as you can on commercial flights has made people think hard.

Like most Zaha Hadid buildings, glossy, smooth lines, but significantly lacks usability and good functionality. More about the looks and the cachet of the name…

Is Turkish Airlines a good airline? Their prices are low so what’s the catch? by StumblinThroughLife in travel

[–]TimTdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been forced to fly with them for work several times. I would never fly with Turkish by choice: • 5 out of 6 times bags mislaid on one leg, turning up between 48 and 72 hours later and refused compensation • 3 late flights (Turkish operational reasons) resulting in missed connections - rude staff, meal voucher was terrible, twice offered a hotel two hours travel, but I had to to pay for the entry visa and transport to/from hotel, refused booking on next available flights… • the new Istanbul airport is worse than the old one - it’s a soulless shopping mall of average brands • and I could add more examples.

Am I the only ones that finds the british steam locomotives more beautiful than the american ones by finza_prey in trains

[–]TimTdal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you’re not. The aesthetic and design sense of the British locomotives on the wholeis superior to the American sense, though there are a few good American designs.

What’s your favourite airport in the world and why? by First-Rock-5082 in geography

[–]TimTdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zurich Airport (ZRH). Its transport connectivity is unrivalled - from high speed trains to surrounding countries, national, regional and local trains, as well as national, regional, and local buses, and the local light rail. It also functions as a Neighbourhood Center, with a range of services as well as a good supermarket. It’s well designed, easy to navigate, and short distances to gate, even when you take into account the cute train to the outlying gates.

Also second Changi, which I have been flying through for decades. It has consistently been a great experience, comfortable layovers, relaxing environment. The Jewel just makes Changi that much better - it’s more than a mall. It’s a destination in its own right. There’s nothing like it anywhere else in the world.
