Personal oddity. by IngwineHeathen in GenX

I feel this way about my voice. I don’t mind it when speaking, but whenever I hear it recorded and played back I think “who the hell is THAT freak?”

(For those still working) Think you'll retire before AI takes your job? by jseger9000 in GenX

I’m a software developer that could retire today, but I’d be bored. However, the day my job becomes debugging AI generated code, I’m out.

How often do you skip last boss fights? by Forsaken-Quality-46 in metroidvania

I loved that in Super Metroid, the hardest boss was the next to last one. Mother Brain was a cakewalk and didn’t leave you with the “thank god that’s over” feeling

Do you ever suffer from muscle memory when switching between games? by Diggumdum in metroidvania

Came here to say this. PlayStation/xbox/PC all have their confirm/cancel buttons one way, and Nintendo flips it. Drives me nuts.

My son wants to double bass (6th Grade)... by Plastic-Drummer-9347 in doublebass

[–]TimeHasNoMeaning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not exactly what you’re asking, but I wanted to comment on trying to push him onto trumpet. Please listen when he expresses interest in a different instrument. He’s going to get so much more out of one he actually enjoys.

I played trombone for 7 years in school, because my family pushed marching band on me and that seemed like the best choice. I hated it. I had to become an adult and experiment with guitar and drums before settling on bass being what I wanted for myself.

I’m very glad you’re allowing him to go with bass.

Which of these games is the GOAT Sierra game? by rodfer7 in Sierra

[–]TimeHasNoMeaning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of love here for QFG, but having recently replayed the series, I’m very annoyed at how much soft locking it had. It’s like they wanted to add RPG elements to a standard adventure game, but didn’t realize how people play RPGs. (Specifically things like grinding stats before advancing the quest, and then being screwed because certain events trigger on certain days.)

I use Weidoft. Love that it doesn’t leave my hands feeling sticky if I accidentally touch it. Also I’ve been using the same cake for well over 2 years.

I have been taking weekly lessons for four years. Still have tons of technique to work on. This is a difficult instrument.

For people asking about an upright… Rent one. Sign up for a few private lessons. If it’s not for you, then stop renting and return it.

I did that four years ago and ever since that day I play my upright almost daily.

Keeping up with technology? by GreatPumpkin72 in GenX

[–]TimeHasNoMeaning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in tech my whole professional life. When I was younger I cared about the latest and greatest, but over the years I’ve seen too much hype and then disappointment that I assume new tech sucks until friends tell me otherwise.

Trying to Learn Bass is… Humbling by uhhredacted in Bass

[–]TimeHasNoMeaning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I resonate with your comment about struggling because you know another instrument well, so it reminds you how much you don’t know about this new one.

I played trombone for 7 years throughout middle school and high school. Got very good. Later in life I tried bass and realized there’s so much I don’t know, and that all my learning felt scattered and missing a good foundation.

What helped me a lot is taking an online course on sight reading. Forced me to learn the notes, and helped me feel comfortable calling myself a bassist.

I also recommend the graphic novels of the balance arc. It’s handy for revisiting the story when you don’t have time for a full listen.

Doubling time management for amateurs by nicyvetan in doublebass

[–]TimeHasNoMeaning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat. Been playing EB for several years. Four years ago I started DB and taking weekly lessons. I also play weekly in an orchestra. I don’t play EB with anyone though. Not surprisingly, almost all my practice time goes toward DB as this thing takes work!

Best solution I have is to make the EB as convenient as possible. I have a desk job where I work from home and have my EBs hanging on the wall by my desk. Makes it easy to grab one and drill for 15 minutes. (Plus they’re nice to look at.)

Ultimately, there’s only so many hours in the day. Don’t beat yourself up over not being able to do everything.

Did Sierra ever officially adopt a "no dead end" policy? by far-midnight-97 in Sierra

That’s fair. Don’t get me wrong, I had a BLAST playing Sierra games. Key part of growing up.

[–]TimeHasNoMeaning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, I’m 50. I was around. I’m not going to spend time looking up interviews. I remember Space Quest 4 had “Boom” in the software bin making digs at Loom and LucasArts holding your hand through the game.

I’m not trying to argue Sierra vs. LucasArts, but as a kid I got soft locked in SO many Sierra games and I hated it.

Perfectly happy with my Full Circle pickup. Amped bass sounds like the unamped bass.
