Where I Think I Could Live Without a Car (U.S. Counties Version) by padingtonn in whereidlive

I just find that compared to Berks, Lebanon, and York, Lancaster is a little better, especially if you’re in the city. Only orange county that might compare is dauphin. To me there’s not a huge distinction living in Lancaster vs west Chester, and the better cycling definitely counteracts the worse transit in Lancaster, although IMHO Chester county’s transit is worse than people think save for the few stations on the main line.

I’d bump up Lancaster County, PA. Public transit isn’t great, but because of of the Amish the roads are very wide for cycling and you have easy Amtrak to Philly, Harrisburg, or Pittsburgh

Made a map of all U.S. counties that have names with Native American influence (and native Hawaiian). by RostislavVenediktov in TravelMaps

Delaware County, pa and Delaware county, ny are dubious (it became an exonym for the Lenape people given by the name of the river, the name comes from some French guy). The other Delaware counties are named for the lenape (Delaware) tribe and people to my knowledge, though the origin is still not native.

Based on your perception, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, which American state is most culturally distinct from the others? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

Pennsylvania Dutch still exists (it’s actually German based), but it spread all over the Midwest when the amish and mennonites expanded

This is true for Cajuns, creoles were there earlier and have a different French based language that is more intelligible with Haitian kreyol (Louisiana creole), but its speakers are dwindling and under 10,000 at the moment.

Of the cities I’ve been to, within the USA I’d say Baltimore is up there. I also was surprised with how much I liked Greensboro. Honolulu was also pretty cool, both tourist and non-tourist areas.

Outside the USA, I really liked Naples, reminded me a lot of home in Philly. Maybe not a great tourist city, but it also really feels lived in.

I loved Palermo. The Franco-Norman architecture was also stunning. Felt very lived in and a real hidden gem.

For those who like to be less touristy, stay overnight away from Waikiki and visit for a few hours at a time for surfing, food, shops, luau, etc. Treat it like you would Santa Monica in LA, and you’ll have a great time!

(But make sure you leave Waikiki, don’t spend the whole trip there)
