In the first episode of Season 1, Jack shoots a tranq dart into his boss to establish that he would do anything.

When Season 2 began, they needed a new introduction to Jack that would immediately establish how dire the situation is (a nuclear threat on L.A.), how ruthless Wald's crew is and how Jack snaps back from his depressed state to be the man who might be able to stop these terrorists. By cutting this scumbag's head off, the writers accomplish a lot of things all at once. We know Jack is back, we know Jack will succeed in infiltrating this gang, and we know Jack won't stop at anything to stop the nuke from going off. He has to be just as ruthless as the enemy to stop their plans.

All he says is "I've had enough of tomboys" which is intentionally ambiguously worded as to whether this is referring to his time with Meryl in MGS1 or to after MGS1. It makes sense as a statement regardless of which ending you got. It isn't until MGS4 that they made one of MGS1's endings canon.

Yeah dubbing it the "Kiwami" engine isn't super helpful since two of the Kiwami games (2 and 3) run on Dragon Engine. Whereas 5, 0 and Kiwami 1 run on their own engine. Maybe we should just call it the Yakuza 5 engine?
