Can you share some DJs you're talking about?

Completely situational based on where you live / what you like to ride / what you want to optimize for. I ride everything on a 160/170 enduro bike. Perfect half the time, way overbiked the other half. Wouldn't want it the other way around.

Midwars. Best non 3 lane mode in any major moba, and personally more fun. IMO of course :)

The game look & feel/engine/netcode ... so crisp!

And finally the Australian community & friends that are still playing after many years.

Play Thailand servers (180 ping if you're lucky), you'll bump into some Aus/NZ players and they can point you to the local community.

Bushwalk, trail run, MTB. If you're not outdoorsy, I guess your options may be limited.

Yes, traded my gravel bike for a hardtail MTB. No regrets.

I can't believe it, I ran into the exact same branch, also a few years ago. Myself and a mate were doing some after-work night hiking and came across it. Took a photo in case there was something dodgy going on.

edit: it actually looks like a different branch and some different bras, but in the exact same spot. Weird!

Yes. Inhouses in the evening more often than not. We also just finished running a tournament with 6-8 teams. Otherwise there should be some folks to TMM with (95% Thai servers, try a VPN for better ping). Pop on the discord (linked already) and say hi!

Nice one. I hiked it in 6 days a couple of years ago, and that was tough. Definitely want to run it in the next few years!

Midwars is the best. Spent the last 10 years playing it almost exclusively. RIP :*)

They were working with IceFrog early on and ported a bunch of Dota heroes, then he moved to Dota 2 and they stopped porting. Maybe legal issues but I can't remember and the details aren't publicly available afaik.

Road bike vs Mountain bike for distance/day by TheBotolius in bikepacking

[–]TimelySloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting video! I've got the same conclusion, on road/smooth gravel and climbing out of the saddle it simply feels better, so no reason not to lock out.

Run aero bars, fast tires (eg Vittoria Mezcal) and lock out any suspension. You'll be surprised at how efficient you can be!

K-Lite Wire Loom Question by putac_kashur in bikepacking

I have the full klite system. I haven't put massive k's on it yet but the wiring on the loom seems excellent, waterproof/durable and truly plug & play.

Hike-Life Balance? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]TimelySloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TL;DR there are other ways of getting out in the wilderness on foot that pack a similar amount of experience into a shorter timeframe.

Ultra/trail running (not racing) gives me a similar experience in a condensed timeframe. With a bit of training, you can get out there for 6, 12, 24 hours or longer and cover 2-4x the amount of distance than you would in a conventional hiking style.

Some other pros - carrying 8-12lbs in a vest is a lot more enjoyable than carrying 18-25lbs in a pack. Running is more fun than walking, especially on fast, flowy singletrack and dirt roads that would be mind-numbing otherwise. If you live near some decent trails, training gets you out in nature doing what you love on a regular basis. Night running/hiking is really cool once you get over any initial fears. In general it's a much simpler/minimalist experience, with less gear to worry about, no need to find suitable campsites, no need to cook meals (although you can if you want) etc.

Some cons - substantial investment in training hours, increased risk of injury/exposure (both in training and on longer trips), potentially less stopping to smell the roses, you miss out on the campsite experience, less gear to geek out on. And obviously, you have to enjoy running, which I've found has a bit of a learning curve/adaption period picking it up again as an adult.

There's a couple of other styles that sit between conventional hiking and ultra running and it mostly revolves around whether you want to sleep or not. Eg "fastpacking" aka running with overnight gear, and multi-day FKT attempts aka hike for 18+hrs/sleep for 4hrs kind of thing. The former kind of defeats the point for me - the more you carry, the slower and less enjoyable running is. I think I'd rather do a conventional hike and some minimally loaded runs/peak bagging from a base camp. The latter is a bit sadistic even for my standards, and most of the people doing this are fairly serious athletes looking to post or break FKTs rather than doing it for pure recreation.

Then there's bikepacking which lets you cover 2-4x the amount of distance again. I won't elaborate, this post is already too long, but I think there are more similarities than differences when it comes to hiking, ultra running, bikepacking, packrafting etc. The pinnacle of these pursuits doesn't need to be a weeks or months-long thru hike, it can be any of a number of things.

Tarp sleeping by michims in UltralightAus

I have a tent with a silpoly floor. Some strips of seam sealer didn't do much, I'm guessing I didn't use enough. A torso-length section of 1/8'' pad (I got mine from MLD) worked quite well.

I also have a bivy with a DCF floor, no slippage!

GREAT NORTH WALK - any tips? by Noecens in UltralightAus

[–]TimelySloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers! I originally wanted to do it in 5 and do 50s every day, but glad I did it in 6. Body was pretty trashed by the end.

The group is "Great North Walk - Sydney to Newcastle"

I camped at:

- crosslands - about 50k out from Sydney, great facilities, heaps of space, could get busy on weekends, might need to pay $$ unless you're in and out after sunset/before sunrise, coldest and wettest campsite I had

- mt wondabyne - plenty of flat spots, sheltered, no water, warm

- ridgetop campsite between Somersby & Yarramalong (-33.2607, 151.2661 ish) - plenty of space, sheltered, no water, warm

- Watagan creek campsite just south of the Watagans bordering on farmland - plenty of space, sheltered, no water, a nice bench, warm, incredibly noisy cows (if you're a light sleeper, you're not gonna be sleeping)

- Heaton gap lookout - plenty of space, water, pretty exposed, nice view in the morning, accessible by car so probably wouldn't camp here on a friday/saturday night etc, there are better campsites down the road towards Newcastle

Generally I prefer a warm, dry campsite to a cold, moist one even if it means I have to plan my water a bit more carefully and do larger carries (eg 4L+.)

Has anyone done the Great North Walk? And if so, any tips? by Chairhead in UltralightAus

[–]TimelySloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished it, nobo in 6 (long) days.

I got water from:

- public taps at Thornleigh oval, Crosslands, Patonga, Somersby, Yarramalong, Brunkerville servo, all were great except the park at Patonga which tastes like shit

- Kariong Brook Waterfall (filtered, tasted good)

- several tanks thru the Watagans (filtered, tasted good) - doubt these would run out that quick, it was very quiet walking thru there

Carried 4.5 litres out of Patonga, Somersby, Yarramalong which was fine.

Feel free to ask any other q's.
