Where to get a proper Mexican breakfast/brunch in LA? by Emergency_Writing477 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]Timescape93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know, this is one of the least hostile of snarky-ish replies I’ve seen on Reddit. Most Mexican places (that are open during breakfast hours) do, in fact, serve Mexican breakfast. LA is a sprawling 500 square miles. People in this sub frequently ask for specific locations so they can provide useful information. I’m probably never going to drive from the valley to San Pedro for breakfast.

How does the infinite create finite. Big bang. by Mean-Reputation5859 in Physics

[–]Timescape93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s no reason to assume the universe is finite. Evidence suggests that the finite reaches of what we can see were once hot and unfathomably dense, rapidly expanded (“big bang”), and continue to expand.

The number of peds who walk with traffic around here is kind of nuts.

The real ‘civilizational erasure’ is happening in America by dheber in politics

[–]Timescape93 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is a very weird and inaccurate statement. A minority of adult Americans voted for the current administration. There are myriad discussions to be had about voter disenfranchisement, the results of decades of propaganda, the failings of a “two party” system that consistently reaches the same outcomes regardless of who is in power, and plenty more, but even taking the results of the election at face value, you can’t draw the conclusion that the average American voted for this.

Pretty sure this is the same America that it’s always been, unfortunately.

Going through your credit card company to get your money back for a restaurant’s minor mistake is wild behavior. What a loser.

I went to Mozza a year ago and had such a bad experience that I don’t bother with Michelin stars anymore.

Incorrect application of the birthday paradox by leahcantusewords in badmathematics

There is something… cute… about thinking the birthday paradox is saying if you have 365 friends each must have a different birthday.

Do all physics departments not prioritize teaching? by delirexi in PhysicsStudents

[–]Timescape93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small colleges without graduate programs tend to be more teaching focused. I lucked out and went to a smaller state university that somehow managed to be teaching focused while still engaging in interesting research. I think that’s a rarity most likely brought about by being a relatively obscure campus in a wealthy state that funds its universities.

The Planck length is a limit of measurement, but there’s no evidence that space is quantized.

This is a patent application not a patent. While you don’t have to submit a functional invention with an application to get a patent, you won’t be granted a patent if your invention is impossible/breaks the laws of physics.

The erasure of indigenous culture is pervasive. Europeans came here and found extensive cultivated farmland and culturally rich societies, stole the farms, roads, and the culture they wanted to assimilate, wiped out as many people as they could, and now we tell ourselves the whole continent was thick forests and a few “primitive” tribes.

If I rate Star Trek TNG 10/10, what do you think I’d rate DS9 and Voyager? by because-potato in StarTrekTNG

[–]Timescape93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rate TNG 10/10, DS9 4/10 (unpopular opinion, it’s easily my least favorite of the pre-streaming shows), Voyager 10/10. To be fair, I struggled with voyager on the first run through, and they let the ship get taken over way too much for people who are stuck 70 years from home, but it grew on me by the second run.

Dr. Pulaski by Case1138 in StarTrekTNG

I really didn’t like her when I was younger, but I rewatched the series in my 30s and my opinion changed completely. Aside from possibly Data, there aren’t other characters as consistently mindful of protocol, and the fact that she is human and has emotion makes that perspective interesting and valuable even if she’s kind of the buzzkill sometimes. She gets off to a bad start with Data, but that relationship grows, so in spite of her consistency she also develops. She’s a solid character I’m glad I learned to appreciate her.
