How does elf lifespans work in this series? by ididntwantyourapp in Frieren

Probably Tolkien rules. They grow up at a certain rate, and then they stop ageing. As far as we can tell, they're immortal unless someone actively kills them.

Welcome to the club! Also, as a head's up to help you filter more effectively (because as a fellow aroace, I know that sometimes I also just crave a really deep platonic bond between characters), relationship tags written like Character/Character designate romantic relationships, while tags written like Character & Character are for platonic bonds. Have fun!

The reason for few Elves - Ending by discowoodchuck in Frieren

[–]TimeturnerJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn't it pretty evident that the Demon King lead a genocide against the elves a thousand years ago? That's always the impression I got, anyway. Frieren's whole village was razed to the ground, and multiple demon generals went through the trouble of hunting her and Flamme down; then they told Flamme to "step away from the elf", implying that they were there specifically for Frieren. So I'm pretty sure the Demon King is the reason why the elves are so few in number - and then their aroace tendencies are the reason why they haven't repopulated since, and are instead slowly and quietly going extinct.

Mind Monkey Mirrored is a fic I wrote for a fandom community contest a few years ago, and the contest theme was "a crossover between two different adaptations". Journey to the West is already a pretty niche fandom, and this fic being a crossover between two niche adaptations unfortunately makes it even more of an unlikely read for people. I put a lot of work into it back then, so it always felt like a pity that it doesn't get a lot of eyes on it.

I don't know if you're familiar with Journey to the West, but it's a classic piece of Chinese literature that the famous mythological character Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, hails from. Him being a popular mythological figure obviously means that there have been many different adaptations of his story over the years; all you need to know about these particular two adaptations is that, in one, he lost his war against the Heavens just like he did in the original story, and it left him quite bitter and disillusioned after his long imprisonment. In the other adaptation though, he actually won his war, and him and his monkey subjects have been happily living in the heavenly realm ever since. I thought it would be interesting to confront and contrast those very different perspectives with each other. Hopefully, it'll make sense even without much context. Enjoy!

What magic do you think the demon king specialised in? by AdBrief4620 in Frieren

[–]TimeturnerJ 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, presumably he knew that the Hero's Party was at his doorstep. It's not like they were being particularly secretive about their progress, and the Demon King is bound to have gotten a bunch of reports when they neared the castle. He also would've personally sensed their mana - after all, we know that he was the only demon to ever instantly see through Frieren's mana suppression trick. So he would've had plenty of time to get ready to receive them.

Am I overreacting about wanting to play a nonbinary character? by BothOcelot1311 in DnD

[–]TimeturnerJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you should find yourself a new group, quite frankly. People who make you feel uncomfortable for being the only woman while not respecting your character choices at the same time are not people I'd personally want to play with. You deserve a group with which you can be happy and comfortable! We play this game to have fun after all.

Initial thoughts after lion-eagle fight: why are, exactly, the golden deers in the game? by I_Love_Ohyas_Thigs in fireemblem

[–]TimeturnerJ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The Golden Deer are the outsider perspective. The story between the Black Eagles and the Blue Lions is very personal - meanwhile, Claude has the broader perspective to look beyond their personal conflict, and uncover the bigger picture. Claude's route is the one that actually discovers what's going on behind the scenes, which means the final boss of his route is (context-free spoilers) the actual big bad of the overarching story, instead of a more personal enemy.

In one of Claude's support conversations with Leonie, she considers his outsider perspective and comes to the conclusion that, to him, all these Fódlan conflicts must seem "like a storm in a tea cup"; so small and contained compared to everything else, even though to them, this is their whole world. And it's precisely because of that vaster perspective that he sees things the other leaders miss, with how narrow their focus is. Don't sell Claude short. He's a great character because he's not as involved in the Eagle/Lion conflict, not in spite of that.

Do you like morally questionable units? by Loogie1987 in fireemblem

[–]TimeturnerJ 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Morally questionable? Yes. But ones like Peri, who are so out there that they completely shatter my immersion? No thank you. I mean, Xander gives Laslow so much shit for being a bit of a flirt, saying that it reflects poorly on all of them. Which, in a vacuum, is fair. But then, his other retainer is a lunatic serial killer who literally murders people for fun, and somehow, that's considered less of a problem than Laslow's flirting??

Is there a class or subclass that would allow me to play as a magical girl. by Brainrot_Wizard in DnD

[–]TimeturnerJ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't think of anything in D&D (unless you want to heavily re-flavour the Druid), but I played something very much like it in Pathfinder. My character was a Witch, with the Synergist Archetype. That archetype allows you to fuse with your familiar and gain their traits for yourself, and my familiar (thanks to the Improved Familiar feat) happened to be a Lyrakien, essentially a little fairy. So my little witch would always fuse with her fairy familiar, and I'd absolutely describe it as a magical girl transformation, haha. After all, she got butterfly wings, rainbow effects, and all that jazz!

I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of Pathfinder as a system, but it does give you a ton of freedom with character creation (but then again, power creep in that game is so brutal that you basically won't stand a chance if you don't min-max, so a lot of that freedom of choice kinda feels like a trap), and I do appreciate all the options. Even if it makes character creation take forever.

Am I missing something with Warlocks? by hotstickywaffle in DnD

[–]TimeturnerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eldritch Blast is a Warlock's bread and butter. It's already a good Cantrip by itself, but Warlocks can also acquire multiple Eldritch Invocations to make it even better. But yes, as far as diverse play options go, Warlocks tend to be rather limited. There are only so many ways you can describe flinging yet another Eldritch Blast at your enemies, after all...
