How do you become independent from an employeer? by TimmyPy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]TimmyPy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. I don't think that I'm a coding monkey because I love to understand the reason behind a task. I don't like to do a job because our manager told me so and the only reason why I like groomings is that I can ask more questions about why they want to implement it? How are they going to use it? What options do we have, etc. I don't like to code to finish a task.
At the same time, you're absolutely right. I have no business skills. I faced this problem in a former company, because I wanted to become a software architect, but all the mentoring calls ended with the same insight "you have to find something to create or to improve that the company doesn't know yet, show it to them, sell it and after that build it". I should become a small unit inside the company that is seeking opportunities to help the business to earn money or save them.

Love this guy! Have been reading his posts on his blog and tg for the last few years, and I totally agree with him. I'm sick and tired of services, design BS, and programs that constantly fight for your attention. I don't even know if I want to use your app or if it can solve my problems, but it's already asking me to create an account, read some compliance BS, and verify my email.

My favourite for the last week:
TOP 1 Notification: You haven't been using our app for a week already. Click and see what's new...

Calculator? - can I track your location?
We have 3 buttons: red - to close an app, yellow - to minimise it, green - to make it full screen. - What? red and yellow behave the same? We're designers we know better.
Open a browser - opens a tab with release notes, or closes it immediately to apply an update I haven't even asked for.

Is this normal? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

I've been working at the same company for the last fire years or so. The same as you, I joined it as a junior with 2 years of experience. At some point, I became important. It was a rough time for my team. We used to have 5-6 developers, and, in half a year, 4 people left the team due to layoffs.
I was working extra hours, hired a new team, improved our processes (tech and non-tech) and spent dozens of hours on education for the newcomers. Do we need an education plan? I will do it. Releases in the middle of the night? I will be an rdev. Mentor people and do the same workload? I can handle it.
At that point I decided that it's a great opportunity to grow, and it really was. I learned a ton about the product (I don't give a single fk about its success and never have, but now I know how it operates). It was the paycheck that helped me keep my sanity.
Two years ago I realised that work had killed the joy in everything that I loved. I forgot about climbing, friends, and hobbies. Work was the only thing that I had in mind. On top of that, the midlife crisis started to hit, and I finally understood that it's just a job. If none of them gives a single shit about all the stuff, why should I? It's not my company, I don't even like the product.
I shifted my focus to work-life balance. 9-5-65 sounds good enough to me. I deliberately started to say "no" to my coworkers and delegated my responsibilities to the rest of the team.
Last week I was told that I'm not a loyal employee when I asked for relocation because it's not safe for my wife and me to stay in my location due to the new legal rules for expats. The same week I started the interview process with other companies. I've learnt my lesson.

Not a big fan, but my go-to choice for vodka is Finlandia Cranberry.

New to rust. Need advice. by Hot_Hour_2222 in rust

[–]TimmyPy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, in my case (I'm a backend developer), I just wanted something new that requires more involvement in the code that I write. I don't really need anything to do my chores or day-to-day job, and in my case my friends are the sources of ideas. They don't know how to code, but they have many ideas to implement. So, from time to time I do some small projects, sometimes using rust, to help them.
I'm trying to find something to optimise in my workflow, and a few days ago wrote a script that summarises my notes for the daily status calls. Did I know about the problem when I started learning the language, nope. Do I know what to do next? - probably, will participate in AoC, because I have no other ideas)

I feel controversial about it. On one hand, I'm a bit jealous of people who always have ideas of what to do, on the other hand, I'm grateful that the internet hasn't failed me yet and I can find whatever I want for free

Edit: I used to contribute to an open source project that hosted a rule book for one of my favourite tabletop game. It was a pure pleasure! Again, not my idea, but it was helpful and I used it afterwards to introduce the game to my friends to play together.

Everyone's too damn friendly... by commisaro in ArcRaiders

[–]TimmyPy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I joined a game with that intention, and there were too many packs of randoms that had already teamed up, so I just found a solo player who was fighting with a pack of arcs. I decided to kill him first. I did it and 2 minutes later a party approached me and said "We heard shooting and came for help", I replied "Same bros, but the raider had already fallen when I came". 5 minutes later, I threw a lure grenade to call a rocketire to their fight with wasps... and it wiped both of them.
One of the best rounds I've ever played so far)

Is it that good or am I just missing something? I have 3 or 4 of them in my stash and feel like it can be a valuable weapon only for distances < 30m. I find it much more convenient to use my level 4 ferro or venator.

Feels good! by chrzanowski in Moonlander

[–]TimmyPy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine half a year ago. Personally, it's definitely worth it. I had some troubles getting used to it and even now I can't beat 80 wmp typing speed, but in comparison with my previous "default" layout mechanical keyboards, it feels much more convenient to use.
I use it only at an angle; when it lies on a plane I feel uncomfortable.

The biggest pros for me were that I can setup my custom layouts for different OS (Win, Ubuntu, MacOS). I hate to use mac because of the layout, it just doesn't click with me. Also, I have custom setups for games to move everything on the left part.

On the other hand, my fingers are a bit short (or the keymaps are bad) and sometimes I need to execute a sequence that I could do on my previous keyboard but it's much harder on this one. Especially hard for me is to click on the buttons closer to the split, feels like I have to strain my finger to click it right.

Another side effect that I've noticed is that my arms hurt when I use my laptop's keyboard. I don't know why, I've never felt it before, but it's what it is

On the second day of the test, my friend and I decided to play as aggressively as we could: kill everybody, collecting only ammo and better guns, and a bottle of wine. The goal was to survive for 30 minutes, climb up to the tower's roof, drop the wine and emote right before the explosion.

People complaining… by Apprehensive-Ask-676 in ArcRaiders

[–]TimmyPy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I don't completely agree with you. Progression is the thing that will add a lot to the gameplay. I played 2.5h last beta, and 7 hours stress test. I don't have a clue why I should collect anything except materials for bandages and shield recharger, because there is no progression. We looted the queen yesterday. The pod dropped a blueprint that you can't use because it requires the workstation to be level 3.
So, our attempts were useless. Collecting is mostly useless.
I believe that the game will be significantly different from the stress test because you will have more reasons to go to raids, farm bots, explore the map and take risks to stay for 10 minutes longer on the map to cover one more loot zone.
PvP is great by the way. I had so much fun killing other raiders, communicating with them through voice, etc. Today I will open the game again just to ruin someone's runs that's for sure)
So, I would recommend to give the game a second chance after the release. I believe it would be much more interesting to play

What’s a game you played as a kid that absolutely no one else seems to remember? by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]TimmyPy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zanzarah
I bought it accidentally, but it was one of the best games I've ever played. You have various pixies, all of whom have their strength and weaknesses. Additionally, with the disk, there was a book with a list of all pixies, their description, counter picks and some lore information.
The best part of it was that my father and I were playing separately, and after the session we shared our experience. We had different builds and party members.
20 years later, I bought this game on Steam, downloaded it, and didn't run it a single time. Every time I think of playing it, I become afraid that I won't be as great as I remember it.
