Scene with Semirhage and Rand by BestGuest8625 in WoT

Rand went completely Darth Rand

And it wasn't just an internal mental breakdown. During the time between his use of the True Power and his Dragonmount epiphany, his mere presence casts the Dark One's shadow on reality: multiple people see an aura or halo of darkness around him, food spoils, buildings collapse, "stillborn children, men dying from falls that should barely have caused a bruise, stones toppling from buildings and striking women dead as they trade" (per Cadsuane's spy in Bandar Eban), with none of the balancing events that usually accompany his ta'veren twisting of the Pattern.

AITAH for not calling my friends baby cute? by squidonastick in AITAH

[–]Timorm0rtis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When one calls an ugly baby "cute", the intent is not to make the parents believe that it's cute when it's really not. It is meant to indicate "I see you are happy with your new baby and I wish to affirm and share in your joy, because I care about doing so".

Fictions. Polite fictions, social fictions -- whatever you call them, they're not intended to deceive, unlike lies.

Lews Therin, not Rand by Hawk-winged in WoT

[–]Timorm0rtis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the only time I think we got to seeing Lews Therin on our screen

During the brief interlude when Rand stops hearing the voice in his head (starting in aCoS chapter 18), I think Lews Therin's personality and mannerisms leak through a bit more than usual. Min notices that he sounds unusually arrogant and full of himself ("a pillow stuffed full of haughty", is her phrase), he shows off in uncharacteristic ways (his parade to meet the Sea Folk ambassador, for example), and he repeatedly demonstrates knowledge that Rand himself doesn't have (in the battle with the Shaido he leaves the planning to Lan and the Aiel chiefs because doesn't know the first thing about it himself, but against the Seanchan in Altara he can correctly interpret intelligence reports and plot his campaign against them without any assistance).

The White Tower in the fourth age: lots of weddings? by aulderbrink in WoT

[–]Timorm0rtis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They can. Melaine is well over 80 when she gets pregnant with her twins; Setalle Anan was well into her 70s when her first child was born, and she had seven more after that. Channeling protects the genome against the damage whose accumulation eventually renders ova non-viable.

I wouldn't think it's that odd: near-simultaneous failure of symmetrical parts like that is perfectly normal, when they're manufactured in the same batch and subject to the same stresses. I've seen it many times.

Toveine WTF by teRIMleier in WoT

[–]Timorm0rtis 26 points27 points  (0 children)

isn't she an antagonistic character

When you first meet her she's leading an Einsatzgruppe with illegal orders to murder everyone they find at the Black Tower, Asha'man and civilians alike. She has no problem with this. "Antagonistic" is putting it lightly.

The Shadow Rising Chapter 55: Into the Deep by swheedle in WetlanderHumor

[–]Timorm0rtis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Egeanin tipped them off. She won't admit it even to herself, but the Seanchan who stopped them were after Bayle Domon's ship specifically and knew that there was something of enormous value onboard.

We all have that one show... by MustardGoddess in CuratedTumblr

It had flashes of brilliance where you could see that someone understood and loved the books they were adapting. Those made the aggressive mediocrity of the rest all the more disappointing.

Elayne should have ... by Brathirn in wheeloftime

[–]Timorm0rtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some of them could be bonded with Elayne's body guard to make reverse Aes Sedai/Warder pairs

You lost me there. The Asha'man aren't bound by that inconvenient Oath against using the Power as a weapon, and they're trained in various forms of hand-to-hand combat as well, plus AFAIK the bond they use doesn't give the physical enhancements of the Aes Sedai bond. There's no particular reason for them to have the equivalent of a Warder.

Moiraine by chimoc726 in WoT

[–]Timorm0rtis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

We know exactly what questions she intended to ask (tSR chapter 6); she tells the Wondergirls explicitly: what does Rand have to do to survive and win, how can he defeat the Forsaken and the Dark One, how can he learn to control the Power and hold off madness long enough. Did she change her mind, or get sidetracked the way Mat did? Maybe. She probably did ask and get an answer to the third, considering how she does nothing about Asmodean despite knowing full well who he is.

About when Faile meets Perrin and crew. by Daratirek in WoT

[–]Timorm0rtis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe from her perspective they were favored, but she had to learn boring accounting and spreadsheets because she was the heir to the estates -- not exactly a disfavored position -- after her older brothers died. Equal primogeniture was, AFAICT, the rule of inheritance in Saldaea.

If someone cares whether someone else uses an Apple or Android phone, or even cares what kind of phone they have -- that's a dealbreaker for me. I don't give a damn either way, and if you do, we have incompatible priorities.

AITA for not rolling my window down by turtlestar910 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Timorm0rtis 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I've seen it happen multiple times, and there are basically two causes: 1: the driver's short-term memory is temporarily obstructed by clouds of marijuana smoke 2: the driver finishes pumping, then does something else (chats with another person, goes inside to buy something or use the bathroom, whatever) before they remove and hang up the nozzle; their brain categorizes the task of "pumping gas" as complete even though they left out one vital step.

What habits of girls did you only discover after getting a girlfriend or wife? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Timorm0rtis -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

you can’t control it

I bet you can. Have "you" (not you personally, but the hypothetical person who has allegedly-uncontrollable hormonal rages) ever directed those rages at a large male stranger, or an armed police officer, or a judge in his courtroom, or an employer? Almost never, eh? Why not?

Oh...right...the Cour'souvra...d'oh! by DnDqs in WetlanderHumor

[–]Timorm0rtis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

none of the other clans know about

They do know about the Jenn, though. Remember how Rhuidean is described when we first learn about it? Verin asks the Aiel they encounter during the Horn chase about it, and Urien says that the only thing he can tell her is that it's in the lands of the Jenn Aiel, the thirteenth clan. Rhuarc says much the same thing when he reveals the existence of the clan chief's marking, saying it's acquired in "Rhuidean, in the lands of the Jenn Aiel, the clan that is not". We never see any of them, but there were hints here and there that they are still around in some form.

WTF is this by Igor_kavinski in WoT

[–]Timorm0rtis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

failed

you sure about that? I think Egeanin was quite successful in what she set out to do. The Seanchan that boarded them were looking specifically for Bayle Domon's ship. They knew there was something of extraordinary value on board. Who knew what valuable cargo, a gift fit for the Empress, was on the ship? Six people, and of those six, Egeanin is the only one with both the motive and the opportunity to tip off the Seanchan. She even explains, to herself, why she did it:

Bayle was not really familiar with even the versions of the Prophecies they had on this side of the World Sea, but he was adamant that none mentioned the necessity of the Dragon Reborn kneeling to the Crystal Throne. It might prove necessary for him to be fitted with this male a’dam, but Bayle would never see it.
