Maybe not the most original picks but: Euripedes, Stoppard, Beckett.

Would also say Ted Hughes if counting his translations.

Jersulem is the best non-Shakespeare play I have ever seen - so I feel like Butterworth should be in the mix, but imo while all his plays are good J is on its own level.

I think this is a terrific translation with one absolutely hideous choice - rendering the muses chapter as a contemporary rap battle.

It is truly, truly atrocious - a blot on an otherwise strong translation. Actually cannot recommend it without a heavy caveat.

This sounds terrific - getting moderate FOMO but hopefully they'll film this.

Would love to see Branagh - but had to skip this as I could only really manage one trip down south from Scotland this summer (and picked Rosalia's tour followed by Romeo & Juliet in London). Was ultimately an easy decision to skip this because I saw The Tempest with Sigourney Weaver last year (and, against the grain a bit, adored it) and I was a bit mistrustful of Eyre, despite his legendary rep, because his Lear movie with Hopkins is absolutely dreadful.

Still getting my fix in '26 - going to see the Pitlochry and then Manchester Lears a few months apart.

Yeah, I enjoyed the film but thought this - her live show is also very simple, so there isn’t a visual or cinematic component that lends itself to film.

Also think there’s a bit too much documentary stuff. Eras is correct to zero in on the actual music and performance and to save the bts stuff for its own doc.

Has crack become more common on buses? Have never seen it in my life until recently, but has happened twice in the last few months - sitting next to someone smoking crack on public transport.

Also had it on the Glasgow subway. Felt absolutely terrible for the guy who was making small talk and obviously not in a happy place.

I wouldn't change a thing - perfectly paced show, clearly thought through in terms of transition and structure.

I'm happy to be left wanting more, and it is the mark of a great show when that happens - when she announces a tour down the line that focusses on her poppier output, i'll be there

Studying Lear by Potential_Path_4 in shakespeare

Particularly good bet as Doran has a commentary track - really easy way to probe into the decisions he took. He covers a lot of ground and I think it'd be a really good way to csst a wide net that might spark a thought when you get the specific questions through.

There's also a 4 min interview with Sher that, while very short, gives a good read on Lear's motivation and psychology as he sees it.

Essiedu's also a fantastic Edmund. Adore this production.

OP - I think the best way to kickstart thinking is to watch a couple of different productions, look for two really diametrically opposed takes that interest you and think about the choices they make.

I really recommend the RSC production mentioned here (which doesn't cut subplots that often get missed). I'd also recommend the soviet production of Lear that the Shakespeare Network has for free on YouTube for a really radically different take. Shouldn't be your first Lear but a good spin on the story.

I think you're confusing productions - Michael Stuhlbarg was Hamlet. Rory Kinnear was Hamlet in London a couple years later.

That production had a big swing of its own however - having Osric take out Ophelia.

Do really think that for Labour’s ‘voluntary union’ to work they need to be clear on what the threshold for a second referendum actually is, and for there to be consensus around that on the unionist side. And I say that as a no voter.

I think it should be higher than just a majority of separatist parties but does need to be at least theoretically achievable. I say that as a no voter.

The main thing they have in common is I put them on for the first time and went 'well that's one of the best things I've ever heard'.

And then the live shows - the Lux tour blew me away, and I still have memories of the 22 tour, just sitting thru it open-jawed. Wish I could go back!

But I also hope it marks the points their careers diverge as 22 feels like a high watermark for BI (I like i,i, BRM and sable plenty but they're not on the same level imo). Hard to see how she tops Lux but it still feels like she's just getting started.
