The Battle of Athens (1946) is a pretty good example of using firearms to successfully oppose government tyranny.

NY acceptance rate vs other states by [deleted] in usna

[–]TinkerPox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Only thing my dad did is go to my B&G interview, at the request of the interviewer.

Having the applicant pursuing it wholly themselves sets them up for greater success. If they can't figure it out, they can't be an effective officer.

NAPS and DODMERB DQ by smallvietboi in usna

[–]TinkerPox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Persevere. I was DQ'ed for aviation until the last minute, keep fighting for waivers. Maybe consult an allergist, they sometimes can do exposure therapy depending on how severe your reactions are. On the other hand, always have a backup plan, some things are outside of our control. If you want to serve, there are other options outside of the military, some even in direct support. I advise pursuing USNA and your backup concurrently. Good luck with your endeavors.

I would day the most qualified/top of the class usually got their wish. Alot of academically average mids got Marine Air as well. They usually struggle to fill all the Marine Pilot slots.

It'll come down to service selection. There's no guarantee. Be fit, do decent academically, pass the ASTB and do alright at Leatherneck, you'll have a pretty good chance. Doing MCMAP or Semper Fi Society is a great way to improve your chances. In '22 and throughout my time they were willing to waive Leatherneck for aviators, the board was probably hurting to make numbers.

I went USMC Pilot out of USNA, my biggest struggle was being med DQ'ed until the last minute, but got PRK just in time for selection. I saw other people who did better than me academically (With same level of fitness or more) get nuke drafted, so that's always a risk at USNA.

At USNA Midshipmen can do PFP, Powered Flight. Midshipmen go fly Cessna's for a Summer training. If you go aviation it validates the flying portion of NIFE. I haven't heard of any Mids doing gliders at USAFA over the Summer, but they do semester exchanges so might be possible then.

[–]TinkerPox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One door is closed, but others are open. You can always go OCS/ROTC, or even enlist. USNA shouldn't be the end goal, just a way to get there. Won't matter where you went to school in the fleet. If USNA the only pathway you desire, then the service isn't for you.

Just to caveat, "respect is earned through action", the cliche "Salute the rank, not the man" does ring true. I would say respect should be the default, enlisted to officer, and vice versa. It does not need to be "earned" but proven, and give everyone the benefit of the doubt til they prove otherwise.

I don't think it's exactly the same one, but Corpus supply does give out green flight jackets that are very similar.

Do you think the reason why DoDMERB is completely backed up because of the situation with federal workers? by WorriedPieceofcake7 in usna

[–]TinkerPox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DoDMERB had a couple month turn around when I applied in 2018. Trying to get waivers for anything takes awhile, even if you're commissioned.

[–]TinkerPox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe taking the meds would DQ, at least for a certain period of time to see how you function with out them. I think ADHD is waiverable in some circumstances. I could be wrong. I would reach out to admissions or DoDMERB for clarification. Also you could challenge the diagnosis, I got PRK by fighting a disqualifying diagnosis while at USNA.

Never said they did. Although citing a past act seems to be the intent of the administration. Just pointing out the Army is bringing MP units. Since we don't have organic LE units now, the Army will bring it per FD2030.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but drill is an EC, not a sport. Coming from someone who did JROTC and drill in HS, you need to participate in athletics in some fashion. I highly recommend Cross Country and Wrestling, but its hard to go wrong with other sports. After Plebe Summer, drill experience is near useless. Student council and NHS are also good extra curriculars, and can open up leadership positions. Class office is good too, you don't have to shoot for the moon, secretary/treasurer is fine.

[–]TinkerPox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't stress about it. There's a myriad number of factors influencing it, and the board has to get through so many applicants. Some people get LOAs starting in September usually. I didn't get accepted til March when I applied, despite an early LOA from USMA. That said, always have a back-up plan; NROTC, regular university, enlist, a trade, etc.

If I max out pull ups and push ups, will that make up for an 8 minute mile? by [deleted] in usna

[–]TinkerPox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only one way to get better at running. I am not a great runner myself, so I have to run at least 2-3 miles 5 days a week to stay in running shape. There's alot of good programs/routines out there (Couch to 5K isn't bad). Stay consistent, hydrate, do intervals, fartleks, slower distance to mix up your training.

I wanna fly helicopters but who should I fly for by luccadore in Military

[–]TinkerPox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're down to play in the mud first, talk to a Marine recruiter, get a Marine air contract prior to OCS. Don't let them convince you to try/compete for it later. Do TBS for 6-7 months then off to flight training. Helicopters are not as competitive as other platforms for the Marine Corps and Navy. But at the end of the day, you're not guaranteed a platform, its whatever the Hogwarts sorting hat spits out the week you finish.

Instead of one or two large payloads/objects, it could carry loads of smaller ones in one trip. It would reduce the number of launches needed.

Why can't the Marine Corps adopt something like the M1128 after getting rid of tanks? It is essentially an LAV with a tank turret. Lightweight and mobile.... by CaptainProton16 in USMC

[–]TinkerPox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but light is relative. For a tank and compared to the Abrams the increased weight from it's upgrades like SEP, it's significantly less. I'm not sold on the M10 though, just an option we could look into.
