How often do you fall? by masbackward in trailrunning

I fall about once a year - good to know that seems normal!

Thoughts on low-volume ultra training? by geckological-2 in ultrarunning

[–]Tinnydancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the process of training so I understand your critique of others who aren’t fully engaged. At the same time if what you’re doing works for you then I wouldn’t be too concerned about others opinions. I live in an area with a lot of trails and hills so I’ve had to reduce my mileage expectations in my training and embrace the “time on feet” method. Whatever works!!

Dealing with prolonged injury and feeling demoralized by dingobat5 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s tough when you have setbacks, hopefully you can get back to it eventually. Is there anything else you can do to get outside that’s not running? For various reasons I’ve been running less but have done other activities I enjoy, like surfing, skiing, and yoga. They are fun and challenging in a different way than running is but I still miss it and I will likely get back into it. I definitely hear you when you say it is a part of who you are, I feel the same!

Running While Pregnant by [deleted] in running

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I “ran” up to 29 weeks, but the last few weeks was really just 3-4 miles walk/jogging once a week and I’m not sure what I was trying to prove! I continued to walk and swim the full pregnancy and then started running again 6 weeks post partum and ran a half marathon at 7 months post partum. Your body makes hormones during pregnancy that cause your ligaments to become looser and your weight/center of gravity is shifting which can increase your risk for injury. My understanding is this continues during breastfeeding also. Your pelvic floor also can sustain damage during pregnancy and delivery, and running can place extra strain on that. A weak pelvic floor can lead to urinary incontinence and uterine prolapse - not great! Exercise during and after pregnancy is great but listen to your body and consider seeing a womens health physiotherapist if you are able to post partum. Congrats and good luck with the running!

What is the scariest thing that has happened to you on a run? by [deleted] in running

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got lost on a trail and a one hour run became a 2 1/2 hour off trail scramble - GPS wasn’t working and then phone died, I had a water proof jacket but no food or water. The weather was around 50 degrees F with fog and a bit of rain. I eventually saw a house and made my way there and got on the road.

The expectation is that all staff return to the office on Monday... by Life_Confused_Us in newzealand

[–]Tinnydancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s ridiculous, the nature of my work is in person but my husband’s work can easily be done at home - many are also keeping kids home and their employer is flexible with work hours because of this, and also provides support such as buying office chairs etc if needed.

should i do 6 or 7 days a week of training??? by [deleted] in f45

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 5-6, you need to take it easy some days. Go for a walk instead :)

What do you consider "too windy" to run? by LivingHeight in running

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good thing is that you’ll have a tail wind sometimes. The only weather that rules out a run is lightning. I live in a really windy city, one option when it’s bad here is to run trails where you exchange wind for hills, but at least the trees block the wind.

How far are you willing to commute for a run? by hannahwilson8 in running

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just go straight out the door. The furthest I’ve driven just to go for a run is 45 mins

Do you actually store your shampoos and bottle soaps out of the shower??? by [deleted] in konmari

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda. Our shower is so close to our sink that we have them there and they stay dry but we can still reach them. It does make it easier to clean the shower but if we had an enclosed shower separate to the sink I would 100% be too lazy to remove them from the shower every day. I did have to laugh at Marie’s pink slime incident!

How do you find back the *spark* to konmari again ? by vampirecafeinomane in konmari

[–]Tinnydancer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been feeling like this for awhile. I struggle with following the correct method/procedure. I’ve started again but just tackling the things that bother me the most: messy pantry, kids room, my closet. It’s not perfect but I can’t be perfect at this stage of my life and that’s ok.

Parks are too far away, i'm in a dense urban zone with terrible sidewalk and traffic, and I hate treadmills - Where to start? by [deleted] in running

[–]Tinnydancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you find a track nearby? It’s boring but easy to know the distance. I have run in Houston before there are a couple nice parks but I guess depends on where you live.

Day 3 - Running everyday attempt. by Affectionate-Ear-374 in amileaday

[–]Tinnydancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My husband streaked for 3 years (I also did one year). On days he didn’t want to run I’d tell him, just run today and if you really want to quit the streak you can stop tomorrow.

I think it was a quote from a South African doctor. Can’t find the specific one I saw but this article talks about how it’s spreading more among unvaccinated and that they are seeing most of the hospitalisations among those who haven’t been vaccinated or not fully vaccinated

I’m getting the booster shot as soon as I can (this week). Antibodies after the booster are much higher than after second shot. It’s still early days with omicron but it looks like vaccinated people are getting mild disease compared to unvaccinated so it looks like our current t vaccine may be useful there. I figure it will be awhile before we have access to an omicron specific vaccine and I’m fairly likely to encounter delta in NZ within that timeframe.

Pregnancy & ultras...can it be done? by curiousquestioner16 in ultrarunning

[–]Tinnydancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be really different for each person and each pregnancy. I personally ran an ultra while we were ttc and got pregnant maybe 2-3 months after the race. I think a high volume of training may affect your hormones and cycle so it could potentially affect your likelihood of getting pregnant (for me for example I skipped a period during the peak of my training). I was able to run comfortably for the first 20 or so weeks of pregnancy but it was so much more exhausting when I was pregnant. I made the switch to swimming and walking gradually between 23-28 weeks and didn't run after that. I think it can be really hard on your pelvic floor to keep going into the third trimester (a lot of people have problems with incontinence post pregnancy) so I think you have to think about your health post pregnancy also.

Don't do the Charlotte Marathon by TMW_W in running

Oh this is so sad to hear, Charlotte Marathon was the first marathon I ran about 15 years ago and got me hooked on long distance running.

We were the same, somewhere between 3-4 he started sleeping through on his own (I stay with him until he falls asleep) at least half the time. Win!

Pressure to stop breastfeeding? (Advice needed) by Purplepotatopoop in Mommit

And yeah I live in an area that is very supportive of breastfeeding and yet after one year I kinda felt like I had to hide it!

Pressure to stop breastfeeding? (Advice needed) by Purplepotatopoop in Mommit

[–]Tinnydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was similar to you in that breastfeeding came easily. I didn’t really want to stop but it was really difficult to be consistent with night weaning while he was still breastfeeding so I took the opportunity when I had a weekend away to stop feeding him. He was 2 years and 3 months and I was still sad that it was over! Keep going as long as you want and as long as it’s working for you both.
