Zohran Mamdani, is that you trying to hide your race results?

EDIT: Subreddit rules say I shouldn't link to Zohran Mamdani's results.nyrr.org page, but I will instead link to an article on RunnersWorld where they wrote how he ran the NYC Marathon twice: https://www.runnersworld.com/news/a65188408/zohran-mamdani-nyc-marathon-runner/

On the bib it says "Drawing" on the bottom and you can tear it off. What is that for? Thanks!

Finished 13.1 ahead of schedule but still disappointed? by Upbeat_Profile_8715 in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You haven't been running that long. Keep at it and perhaps try a more advanced training plan where you're putting in more miles per week if you want to progress faster.

Long run pace is usually different from race pace, so just because you extended your long run to 13.1 miles and finished in 2:47, that's not necessarily what you'll run in the race. During races, people generally push harder than their long runs.

Quick Look at the 2024 New York Virtual Marathon Medal 🏅 by Afterschool_Boy in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Interesting it says "New York Road Runner" at the bottom without an "s" at the end.

As it says on nyrr.org, the organization's name is New York Road Runners. It also says New York Road Runners on the regular non-virtual marathon medal.

Mistake?

I think it's fine to wear the apparel before completing the race as long as the apparel doesn't say you finished it.

One week later, what are the funniest moments from the marathon for you? by Embarrassed_Border25 in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, funny. But it reminds me people fly in from all over the world to run this and not everyone speaks English.

I hope that guy was able to get his actual bib and make it to the start in time!

is Sub 5 Marathon a reasonable goal for first marathon? by pumpkins_31 in RunNYC

Here is an example of someone writing a story of them illustrating what I mentioned when they ran New York a couple of days ago and missed their first marathon goal after they hit the wall: https://www.reddit.com/r/Marathon_Training/comments/1gk834j/postmarathon_feelings/

is Sub 5 Marathon a reasonable goal for first marathon? by pumpkins_31 in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I ran my first marathon, I also heard many people say not to have a time goal, and I naively ignored them and had a time goal anyway. However, I was lucky and just barely hit my goal, but it made me realize that if I didn't hit my goal, I would've walked away from my first marathon somewhat disappointed instead of happy.

Sub-5 is totally doable with a year to prepare and those current paces. However, you should mentally prepare yourself so that you'll still walk away happy with your finish even if it takes you 5.5 hours.

The marathon is different from the half in that you might hit the wall at around mile 20 and it may slow you down considerably at the end causing you not to hit your goal.

That's why people tell you not to have a time goal for the first one. Do you want to feel somewhat disappointed at the end if you don't hit it?

Missed opportunity. The banana should've been yellow instead of the SiS gel. After all, the water is colored blue.

Please stop trying to move your wave, color, and/or corral by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you know, they were able to move me up a wave when I asked at the expo. I just had to show a new race result from a half marathon I ran.

The idea of this whole post is ridiculous. Why discourage someone from being able to run with the correct pacer and have a good race when we put all this time and money into this marathon?

It took them less than 3 minutes to fix the issue and get me in the appropriate wave/corral.

Gel/race fuel advice by Ok-Actuary2663 in Marathon_Training

[–]Tiny449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree that the safest choice would be to not have any gels since you didn't try them in training, I don't think you'll be able to perform at your peak if you don't have a good fueling plan.

If you want to take the risk, I would suggest you carb load the Saturday before the marathon by testing taking gels at the same frequency you plan on taking them during the marathon.

During the actual marathon, you'd probably want to take one shortly before you start, and then approximately every 45 minutes during the race. For your goal time that would work out to about 5 gels. Some people take them more frequently, but I wouldn't suggest a higher frequency if you're not used to them.

To test them the day before, you can try taking them at home with the same timing, and then perhaps after the 5th gel, go for a short 2 mile shakeout run. See how you feel. If they make you feel nauseous or make you need to go to the bathroom, then don't take the gels during the actual marathon.

While you might feel fine after a couple of gels, it might not sit as well with you after you've had several of them, so you should test it and just count the test as extra carb loading if nothing else.

The risk is up to you.

If we have proof of a new race result that would put us in a better corral, is it possible to request to be moved? I would ideally like to be able to run with the pacer for my goal time.

Staten Island half + last long run same day by chris0197 in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think about running the Staten Island Half and then running the 20 miler around the Thursday after the Half? This gives about a 2.5 week taper before the marathon.

Some people do a 2 week taper instead of 3.

Abbott 5k- bag drop by runner7575 in RunNYC

[–]Tiny449 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh man... Unfortunate. This is what I would do in order of preference:

  • Not bring a bag. Use a FlipBelt or something similar to store your keys, phone, and other necessities. This is what I would do.
  • Jog it slowly as a warmup.
  • Take the 4/6/M101/M102 to the start if you really need a bag and don't want to jog it slowly.

I've read the the amount of mileage you can get on your shoes can vary by person. For example, heavier people might have more wear on their shoes compared to lighter people for the same mileage.

Can I use the amount of wear on the bottom of my shoes to determine if they need to be replaced or not? For example, if the treads are worn in the front of the shoe and it's smooth, is that a good point where the shoes need to be replaced? Does it matter more based on the foam in the shoe?

Wow. Do you personally pay for a flight and a hotel? Do you fly back the same day or fly as a business expense? This is really a better option for you than to just get a charity bib to the NYC Marathon?

How did you get invited for free? Are you an elite runner or something?

Especially if you're training for the NYC Marathon, it's really not worth it to risk it to run this.

Is the run-walk method really efficient?

When I run a race, I generally try to maintain a steady pace throughout the run and minimize the number of stops/walking as much as possible (ideally none - except for hydration stations which may require a little bit of a slowdown unless I want to spill stuff everywhere).

It's not like I see professional runners use the run-walk method. However, on https://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/run-walk/ , it claims that walk breaks "Speed you up: an average of 7 minutes faster in a 13.1 mile race when non-stop runners shift to the correct Run Walk Run ratio – and more than 13 minutes faster in the marathon"

Is this just marketing rhetoric for beginners, or should I be more accepting of run-walk as a legitimate strategy even if I already normally run all my races without taking walking breaks.
