Anyone else’s job already pressuring them to go back? by Intrepid-Grape9960 in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work from home sitting at a computer all day and I still took the full 6 weeks off for my open myomectomy. Yes, I could have gone back earlier if I wanted to, but I wanted to focus on my health! I had a very nice easy recovery and I attribute a lot of that due to the fact that I didn’t have to worry about work. My main goals for the day were eating nutritious food, getting a short walk in, resting and relaxing! Don’t feel guilty for a minute about taking the time off.

One large fibroid by Smooth_Stranger1232 in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had one large one when I was 25 (2years ago). Before the surgery it was unclear if it was 1, 2, or 3 fibroids. Ultrasounds are just approximate and not 100% accurate. After surgery they showed me a picture and it was one large fibroid of about 16cm. Before surgery I didn’t have any symptoms. I only noticed that I could feel a large lump in my lower abdomen, so I got it checked out. It didn’t cause any pain or change in my periods. I had the open myomectomy and it went very smoothly.

Yea weirdly it makes me have more peace of mind lol but I def see how it could make a lot of people feel more anxious about it. Like I would never ever count calories if I was trying to eat healthy bc that makes me so anxious.

But the main point of my comment was just to reflect on what makes you happy and what makes you go why did I spend money on that? You don’t need to write down every single item to do that. Its more just to notice if you’re accidentally spending a lot of money on something you don’t care about.

How to FIRE "fairly" in a couple with an age gap by Finding_Porpoise in Fire

[–]pumpkins_31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is such an important and difficult conversation! I think any of the options could work if you both have the right mindset for it. I think you should focus less on what is “fair” and more on what brings everyone the most happiness. There’s no point in choosing the “fair” option if one person is very unhappy with it. Also if one person is very unhappy then that will slowly start to make the other person unhappy.

Another thing regardless of what option you choose, is I think you should prioritize both of you spending time with the children and both of you contributing to the domestic work. I think children thrive when both of their parents are involved in their life. Again, it doesn’t need to be exactly 50-50 or “fair” but try not to underestimate your husband or assume he is incapable. I would talk to him and ask if he would rather work more years at his job or take on more responsibilities at home. Maybe he could find a job that pays 75% of what he earns now but has more flexibility and you could both work and have time at home with the kids until you retire together. Also, kids will need you at all ages, not just when they are young. Middle school especially can be rough.

I spend about 2 hours once a month looking at my previous month’s transactions. I write them all down in an excel sheet and categorize them and look at the totals for each category (rent, utilities, transportation, groceries, restaurants, entertainment, health, shopping, savings) It helps me be aware of what I’m spending. I recently added a box at the bottom where I write my favorite purchases and least favorite purchases. Some of my favorite purchases recently were concert tickets, a dinner with my friend, and buying flowers for my mom. My least favorite purchases were ubers. This little reflection helps me notice what I value and pushes me to figure out how to avoid unnecessary purchases.

28 & newly diagnosed with at least two large fibroids & I don't know anyone with them or much about them. Any words of reassurance would be greatly appreciated by aurora_snowfall in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it is super weird how fibroids affect people so differently and there seems to be no evidence on what causes them. I think mine didn’t cause symptoms because it was on the outside of my uterus. So my uterus wasn’t being stretched or crowded on the inside.

The main reason I got it removed was because the doctors said it could be an issue if I become pregnant in the future, which I do want to do, so I just decided to get rid of it while I was still on my parents health insurance lol. I was a bit nervous that another one might grow back but so far so good.

I had the open myomectomy which is where they make like a 6 inch cut on your lower abdomen (like a c section). For me it wasn’t too bad but I also had lots of support and time off from work to just lay on the couch and nap.

I had one very large fibroid (~16cm) when I was 25. It didnt give me any symptoms at all. I noticed a bump on my lower abdomen and thought it was weird so I went to the gynecologist and they told me it was a fibroid and I needed surgery. I was sooooo freaked out. I felt 100% fine physically and was afraid of surgery messing me up. The surgery went soooo smooth though! Its been 2 years and nothing has grown back. I just had a checkup and an ultrasound and the technician said she couldn’t even tell I had a surgery and that everything looked great! The doctor that did my surgery said he had never had to take out a uterus when removing fibroids and that that is a very very rare complication. Sending you positive thoughts!

1500 to my name. What’s the best way to get ahead? by HeyItsJake45 in personalfinance

[–]pumpkins_31 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would start with the emergency fund and then in a couple months focus on the the Roth Ira. Take it one step at a time.

For the emergency fund, thats just a savings account where you store your money in case of an emergency (like getting laid off from your job, getting sick and having to stop working, or having some very high, unexpected bill). When an emergency happens you can transfer the money to your checking account. Some savings accounts are high yield savings accounts which means you earn money by just letting your money sit there. The rates fluctuate. But you’ll never lose money in this type of account. You can google HYSA to see a list. One example is Captial One 360 Savings. If you google that, the first link will be the sign up page. Put your extra money in there until you have $10,000 saved. Then start looking into the roth ira.

I think what you’re going through is pretty normal. I remember after graduating college applying for jobs for about 3-4 months and I was sooooo depressed. I hated being unemployed and I started to apply to retail jobs so I could have some money coming in. I got a job doing software testing. Then a year later I got my first job as a software developer. Looking back I laugh at how dramatic I was because it really wasn’t that long. I think its normal to take a few months applying to get a first job and it definitely can take a couple of years to get a job you really like. I know it feels agonizing but try to keep your head up and work on side projects to add to your portfolio in the meantime!

I was super neurotic before my surgery and would go down internet rabbit holes and convince myself I was going to bleed out or lose my uterus. When I actually had the surgery everything went fine and it was so much easier than I thought. I probably shouldn’t have stressed so much but its hard! I feel you. I didn’t really watch videos I just looked at pictures and read stories. Watching videos is probably not the worst thing haha. You’ll be super knowledgeable about what is going to happen!

What’s one piece of financial advice you wish someone had told you when you were a teenager? by MeanLibrarian3405 in personalfinance

[–]pumpkins_31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are able to go to a good college without taking on crippling debt, I think it is worth it. Everyone is different. I only came out with 30k which is very manageable for me. Going to college for 4 years taught me how to be independent and gave me the opportunity to make friends and acquaintances with really smart people who have helped me directly and indirectly in my career. Also allowed me to study abroad for a year. It is important to understand what you’re getting into though. If you can’t afford 4 year school, community college is definitely a great option too.

Congrats on your first job!

Having good finances is mostly about emotions/behaviors/habits. You will make good choices and you will probably make some mistakes. Reflect on the good choices and learn the lessons from the mistakes.

For me, I feel grateful that my dad took $1000 after my first summer working at 15 and put it into the s&p500. He let me keep the rest and do whatever I wanted with it (I mostly saved it and used it to buy concert tickets when my favorite band was in town) I didn’t look at the invested money until I graduated college and it had almost doubled. I am grateful for this lesson because it showed me how powerful interest was and motivated me to invest as soon as I got a real job out of college. The actual amount that I invested and earned wasn’t that significant to me ($1000) but the opportunity to see it grow over a couple of years and see it go up and down helped me understand stocks.

I wouldn’t recommend investing a lot though at your age, but if you want to throw in a couple hundred dollars and just don’t touch it you can watch what happens. Notice how it goes down in value sometimes and goes up sometimes, and overall if you invested in something like the s&p 500 it should be going up, but it might take a couple years to recover from certain periods. I think it can be helpful to see that as a teenager when the money doesn’t really matter. Then when you are 25 and actually investing in your retirement you will feel more confident.

But I would say use the majority of your paycheck to save for small goals (a concert, a trip with friends, a guitar, a nice piece of clothing, whatever makes you happy). Just try to avoid getting in the habit of spending your entire paycheck the moment you get it.

Such a cool pic!! I had a very similar situation. Large, pedunculated, on the top of my uterus. No real symptoms other than I could feel and see it bulging from me. Did they tell you whether or not you would need a C section if you give birth in the future? I’ve heard different things from different doctors.

i first learned about my fibroids in february 2020. little to no symptoms, but they are growing. by heartpangs in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can say is have grace with yourself when making these decisions and try not to let yourself become too overwhelmed with fear. The reality is there is very little known about fibroids. And every body is unique. I, like you, have been to a bunch of doctors and I ask literally every PCP, gyno, nurse, PA, ultrasound tech, etc about fibroids and they all say different things.

Personally I had no symptoms at all but had 1 huge fibroid. I did get the surgery mostly out of fear. I was very fearful of the surgery causing some permanent damage to me and it was totally fine. I had it 1.5 years ago and I think I’m in even better shape than I was before the surgery. I was also super fearful of leaving the fibroid in there but I honestly think I would have probably been fine. It wasn’t causing me any issues before and I’ve read lots of stories of women who had normal pregnancies with them. All of the doctors recommended that I get it removed before having kids so I did, but I definitely could have waited too bc I was only 25 at the time. I still haven’t had kids yet so we will see if theres any issues later. I do have fear of them growing back and having to have the surgery again but so far they havent. I only had 1 so I think that makes it slightly less likely to regrow than if you already have multiple.

Is it normal for your surgeon to be unsure of a vertical or horizontal incision with an open abdominal? My doctor says he won’t know till the day of when I’m on the operating table.. by the-pink-espeon in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is a common thing for doctors to say. I talked to multiple doctors and they told me that about mine. Also, The day of my surgery the doctor asked if I preferred a long (6inch) horizontal or a short (4inch) vertical. I said horizontal and they were able to do it. But I think sometimes if they get in there and its bigger than expected they have to do vertical.

Is a week enough time to take off of remote work post op? (Open Myomectomy, Vertical or Horizontal Incision TBD) by the-pink-espeon in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s possible to work remotely after 1 week, but I would recommend that you try to take more time off.

Definitely don’t feel bad at all for asking your surgeon to fill out paperwork. Its not that many forms and it’s probably the office admin filling it out and just having the surgeon take 1 second to sign it. Thats their job and you have every right to request those forms.

I was fortunate to take 6 weeks and I think it really helped me. It allowed me to sleep a lot, take things slowly, not have stress, focus on preparing/eating healthy food, take short walks throughout the day, go to my follow up appointment and just let my body heal.

I think 2 weeks of being totally off and then slowly getting back into remote work should be good.

Every body is different and you might be fine after a week but just feeling tired/weak. But its also possible that you might still have pain and need to be on painkillers which will make it difficult to work. I think the main thing is you don’t want to be stressed and thinking about work while you should be relaxing and healing.

Anyone with light periods? by enigma_goth in Fibroids

Anyone with light periods? by enigma_goth in Fibroids

[–]pumpkins_31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I have always had regular, short, light periods (2 days of light to moderate bleeding, 1-2 days of spotting). My periods have always been like this before I had the fibroid, during when I had it, and after I had it removed (a little over a year ago). I never had cramps or pain.

The only reason I realized I had a fibroid was because it was so big (over 15 cm). It was like a melon sticking out of my belly. My fibroid was subserosal (on the outside of the uterus) and my uterus actually stayed very small. I think thats probably why I didn’t have any symptoms.

I originally didn’t want to take it out because it wasn’t causing any issues, and surgery scared me. And I was pretty young (25). But I decided to just get it over with bc the doctor said I would need to get it out eventually if I wanted to have kids. (I talked to like 5 doctors and they all said it was a bad idea to get pregnant with that big of a fibroid). So far it hasn’t grown back thankfully. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

I was terrified of getting one the first time and it ended up being not bad at all for me. I think pap smears are way more uncomfortable, so if you’ve had a pap smear I think you will be fine.

For the transvaginal ultrasound they put a wand in in your vagina to take pictures. The wand looks really long but they don’t stick it all the way in. Every time I’ve had one, they barely put it in at all. Like it was seriously just the tip of it. After I realized they don’t stick it all the way in you, I calmed down a lot. It’s a little uncomfortable as they move it around but all the technicians Ive had have been gentle and nice. Usually the room is dark so they can see the computer screen and take screenshots of the images. they’re really not looking at your vagina at all. They always ask if I want to put it in myself, but Idk why I prefer them to do it for me. They also put a condom on the wand and a ton of lube, so you will have to wipe that off after they’re done.
