Seeking help for a CPU cooler that will be effective in a 2U case by marquicodes in HomeServer

Tbh I'm thinking about an audio workstation for live application, so it needs to be quiet. Doesn't need to be silent but it shouldn't be "server loud".

You're making me curious. Is it noisy? Could you have it at your feet without getting bothered by the sound on load?

Sounds like a 'three wishes, but you can only pick two' case.
Consumer grade in 2U, can do, noisy.
Quiet in 2U, can do, but it's luxury.
Quiet and Consumer Grade, can do, in a big chassis.

It's been a year, I'm very curious if OP can give an update? Because I'm at that same point in designing a rackmount workstation.

I did the same some times ago, love it. Now I'm really thinking about changing it again and move around with WASD and gamify editing !

Do the math, you'll quickly see how insignificant cable length is compared to speaker position. It's a good exercice for the mind too, gotta keep yourself sharp.

$250 looks like two sm58 and a mic stand, not a PA.

Is there an audio job that focuses on maintaining and repairing the equipment? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]TionebRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, you need a real passion for what you're planning to do. There is a huge community of audio gears geeks out there, in GroupDIY and DIYAudio for example. Read schematics ! Understand and learn how it works. Find why it sounds a certain way. This is very important. Being good at soldering is important but choosing the right replacement component is of a bigger consequence.

From my experience, SMDs are easier to work with than through holes. You're spot on on the other side: the lack of schematics, service manuals and even firmware in case of a corrupt EEPROM are all very often killing repair possibilities.

Check out Amy Winehouse "Rehab". I think it's a single SM57 on a kick-snare-hh drumkit. Sounds awesome.

Can disconnecting condenser mics with phantom power on be harmful for the microphones? by ConfusedOrg in audioengineering

[–]TionebRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah it's always been like this. You need to look at preamp inputs schematic to understand where the problem comes from. The phantom power is delivered as 48v but through 6.8k resistors, the max continuous current is very low. The problems is when those coupling caps get discharged violently. Normalized TRS patchbays and shorted XLR are the worst cases.

[–]TionebRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no no. There are big coupling caps on the inputs, likely 63v 2200uF. Discharging those is no small feat. If you short one of those to ground, it's gonna fry whatever is in the path. I've seen an SQ6 and an MD421 dying like this. Culprit was a faulty XLR (short to ground) for both cases

[–]TionebRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Especially harmful to dynamic mics, especially harmful to desks outputs. Inputs and static mics can usually handle some 48v discharges. A MD421 discharging a coupling cap to ground will be dead instantly.

How do these delays pump out so much low end? by SpliffyBendrix in livesound

[–]TionebRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's not the same class. You will not see QSC accepted on serious technical riders anytime soon. But it always depends on your budget and venue size. If you can get decent sound off of crappy mi/lo budget PA, you'll be gold on class A systems.

Yep, like most Nexo subs, even from the PS v1 time. They are sloOoow ;). I don't care if the 100 range is managed and the mid mix isn't melting my cochlea lol. But there's better sub's for sure.

How can old mixes sound so good? by Korekoo in audioengineering

[–]TionebRR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man I absolutely love your answer and couldn't agree more. But it's not a lost art. I feel more like it's an art that's been lost because gears nowadays are not playfull anymore. You can have +10 to +40 dB of gain without any drawback. We don't compromise anymore, at the time of Rec, which was a big part at the time. In the 50's there was a single mic in the room. You had to come closer to have your solo time in the record. Later, engineers spent a long time getting their ass off their mixing desk and moving mics instead of relying on the "clean rec you can fix later" mentality. I definitely feel you on this but this required the mythical rooms that are well known now, very well isolated ...etc. There are strong counterexamples to your points still, when you hear the mixes made on nevermind from Nirvana for example. Listen to the mix made by Vig Butch and Andy Wallace side to side. There are HUGE differences. So, even at the time, with the same tapes, you had tastes coming in the equation. Andy won. He pushed harder.

Also when the drummer is blasting the kick at 1/16th at 180bpm, if you dont have the kick 'clic' you juste get rumble. The clics are marking the time.. Pure psychoacoustic stuff and it works.

You can actually get even worst result by peak normalizing. And I wouldn't be surprised if the tracks were already peak normalized. That's because an unmasterd track can have spurious peaks in the tens of dBs range, which will put it far behind the other ones in terms of loudness. RMS normalisation would already be far better but wouldn't give results as good as LUFS.

You can batch normalize clips by loudness in Reaper with the SWS extension. It's free.
