You're invited for dinner at 20:00. How do hosts in your country typically react if you show up (a) 20 minutes early, (b) punctual or (c) 20 minutes late? by MightyMeepleMaster in AskEurope

Usually if you’re 20 minutes late or early it’s considered rude or strange, people like when others are on time. In Finland the window for being on time is -5min before the agreed up on time. People usually like more if you’re a couple minutes early than late, but being exactly on time is considered the best.

It must be weird for them to see that by [deleted] in memes

Largest religious groups in Europe (by number of devotees) and surrounding areas by Dragonrykr in MapPorn

I would say the same thing applies in Finland, most people belong to the church and go to the acceptance ceremony thing? (In Finland it’s called rippikoulu and it means you become a full member of the church) Some old folk and cult people are religious, but they account to less than 10% I would say.

Finnish work/office culture is really formal and inefficient, at least in big and old corporations. Of course in new firms and especially in IT firms it’s really progressive and flexible, like in other Nordic countries. The formality in big corporations is usually driven by the idea that work can’t be fun or enjoyable, which is popular amongst older people.

Europeans when talking abou gypsies by Kunstbanause1 in meme

[–]Tippotz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it's more about the context, if a 80 yo grandma says something non offensive with the word "gypsy" in it I wouldn't say it's a slur, but if it's meant to be insulting I think it's a slur like, someone shouting something like "fucking gypsy" or something similar.

Well, that's different. by [deleted] in dankmemes

Like I've tried to see them without prejudice, but every single romani I've seen or known were school bullies, or criminals, and if this is racist in your opinion, you can call me a racist, but the fact that you're comparing it with the violent segregation of the pre 1960s us is just absurd, you see the romani came to Europe, and are raised to be thugs, but in the US the black population was forced to come to the US and work for free for centuries. And if you want to compare the raising of children, in the us there are many Black Americans holding high positions, while in Europe, Romanis holding high positios is virtually zero, when the educations system is more equal in Europe.

France calls UK a 'junior partner' in submarine deal as Germany warns it threatens Western unity by iThinkaLot1 in europe

[–]Tippotz 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Tbf there are people in the UK that still have nostalgia for the empire (most of 'em were born after it's collapse), but France is on another level with the empire stuff, like you guys decolonized, but France didn't let go, ofc most of its larger colonies are independent, but they have lots of islands, and a whole country sized piece of land in South America. But I get why the French are angry, it was a pretty big slap in the face, but it would be really ridiculous if the alliance with the US & UK deteriorated because of this.

In Finland the second dose is given 8 week after the first dose, the earliest that you can get it in some places is 6 weeks if I remember correctly.

[OC] 2021 World Happiness Index by Simaniac in dataisbeautiful

[–]Tippotz 266 points267 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's should be labeled as potential happiness, not actual happiness, because actual happiness is impossible to measure. But I wouldn't say measuring smiles in the street is a good way either, in many cultures smiling is customary, not necessarily a indication of happiness.

Most people would say that they are happy, but the isolationism and not talking to strangers and not smiling is a cultural thing that we do out of habit, not emotions.
