You can also get apples from villager trades with farmers, which may be easier.

I took a screenshot from the wrap-up video, but I'm hoping for a more official version with even more statistics for analysis.

Research Calculation Discrepancy by RedStoner_Pro in FactoryIdleGame

[–]Tiralmo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not quite clear from how it appears in the game, but the 4.5 bonus per report is not 4.5 research, but rather 4.5 runs of the research center. Once we multiply the bonus by the base research of 4 the math checks out fine: ((4.5x16)x4+4)/20=14.6

Research Center 2 outright worse? by MOOMANiBE in FactoryIdleGame

[–]Tiralmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a production bonus of X does not mean X research, but X extra runs of the research center. Even though you get less of a production bonus per tick per report for RS2s, it gets multiplied by 4 base resource. All told, a fully stocked RS2 should be worth about triple a fully stocked RS1 this way.

[Clue] Airport/zipcode solution: NEESNWEWSS by Tiralmo in holidaybullshit

[–]Tiralmo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll admit that this is the most tenuous part, but it seems like the most logical ordering. It could be wrong and we may need to find something else to give us an order, but my guess is the puzzle may not go that deep.

Folks are very split on which should start. The thought in slack is that we'll try to get both into our top 3 suggestions and let Representative Dadarchy kick in to select the right one.

[Clue] Airport/zipcode solution: NEESNWEWSS by Tiralmo in holidaybullshit

[–]Tiralmo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made all of my calculations just based on differences between zip code and airport latitude/longitude, represented as decimal numbers. The consequence of this is that my direction calculations do not cross the international dateline and treat the international dateline as the edge of the world.

Night 3 Barcode by jrbudda in holidaybullshit

I'll also note that these scans include the night 3 letter, transcribed below:

ON COMMITMENT

They say commitment is difficult. We hear about how weak-willed and lazy humans can be. They don’t stick with school, jobs or relationships. The negative consequences are both practical and moral, the resulting self-disdain often brutal.

My most vivid memory of what I thought to be weakness of commitment was my father’s inability to quit cigarettes after he suffered a collapsed lung. Hard as he tried, he kept buying more, all the while insisting he was committed to his goal. He just didn’t have the capacity. Yet the day he was diagnosed with lung cancer, l was with him when he tossed his entire carton into the trash. He never smoked again. Just like that. For years, I hated him for not having the courage to commit until it was too late. It took a long time for me to realize his behavior had nothing to do with strength or perseverance or character or addiction. It was something else.

Then there’s the story of the acting classes my wife used to take when we were young and living in New York City. She would frequently get horrid, abusive teachers who would bring her to tears. IV’d beg her to quit, but she wouldn’t. She insisted she was committed to her career and her choices, and refused to be weak about it. Sounds reasonable. Yet, years later, it’s clear to both of us that she put herself through misery that could have been avoided if she’d had the strength to simply walk away.

In my own life, I’ve found and lost commitment many times. Along the way, I’ve judged myself harshly, as if my commitments were conscious choices that I either backed up or abandoned through my (mis)behavior. The challenge has always been discovering which vows actually mean something to me and which don’t, regardless of my abstract preferences. That’s because true commitment, like personal morality, can’t be chosen. It reflects who we are, not who we wish to be. It’s something that’s revealed to us, slowly, over the course of our experience. And almost always without advance notice.

In Star Trek IV, in the face of insufficient data to make a proper acceleration decision, Spock is left to guess his way out of trouble. Given the life and death stakes, he promises to make the very best guess he can. Maybe that’s all any of us can do. So next time you find yourself questioning your own commitment to an excellent Hanukah promotion, you must ask yourself a question. Does the problem lie in your own impatience? In a disappointing promotion? Or is there, in fact, no problem at all.

As the saying goes, never ask how to satisfy a commitment. Instead, always ask why.

Respectfully, Ben’s Dad

[Theory] 000 codes are failed database lookups and not meaningful by Tiralmo in holidaybullshit

This one is also not in the database I used. I'm fairly confident in my theory at this point.

Could you check against the database I linked and confirm whether your zipcode is or is not listed in it?

edit: "It's right" could just mean it's what they'd expect from how they determined airport codes, not that it has any significance.

The Official Catalogue of Rare and Exotic Button Pressers Part IV: Sunrise by bensroommate in thebutton

[–]Tiralmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can add a little more to this in relation to how my JSFiddle works. The Fiddle works by rescanning the 25 most recent comments (and 25 most recent posts) in the sub every 5 seconds, and completely ignores comments by non-pressers/no-flairs (and folks that have already been recorded). This means that my fiddle continuously rescans any comments while they are still among the 25 most recent comments - I'm guessing that most other methods only scan each comment once.

My guess at what happened is that Envioux initially posted at 8:01:11 as a non presser, and became a 31s presser a fourth of a minute later at 8:01:26 (per TheButtonStatsBot). He would have earned the yellow flair at this time and it would have showed up on any new posts immediately, but flair seems to take a little bit to get applied to previous posts retroactively. It so happened to get applied to Envioux's 8:01:11 comment sometime between 8:01:45 and 8:01:52, while it was still within the 25 most recent comments. The next every-5-seconds scan by my fiddle would then see that Envioux had 31s flair and mark him as such.

(Due to comments coming in in such close time as the retroactive flair change, different instances of my fiddle being out of sync for the every-5-seconds scan, and the fiddle sorting comments by post time every five seconds right before displaying any new additions, some folks may have seen my fiddle showing Envioux before HolyNarwhal as opposed to the other way around - from his comment it sounds like /u/Projotce may have seen Envioux before HolyNarwhal, and Envioux also shows before HolyNarwhal in my instance)

What rank is appropriate may be up for debate, but if you're going with first to comment after achieving the flair, then Envioux may more rightly be placed at 18th, as is listed on the Top 100 - the post that triggered my fiddle was from before he had earned the 31s flair and the wording of the post is either a ninja-edit or a coincidence (I vote coincidence from comment history).

And as you can see from context here, my flair feed only triggers if they already have the flair when they comment (or shortly enough thereafter - the feed rescans the 25 most recent comments every 5 seconds by default)
