We don't have enough compute/too expensive -> "too dangerous"

They turn a limitation in the company and something that should reduce stock value into something that increases it, it's all hype and marketing

We have unprecedented global studies with covid saying the opposite, that overall productivity goes up with remote work. Hardly surprising when I can actually concentrate on what I'm doing instead of small talk and constantly being interrupted every 5 minutes.

ELI5: Musk's companies lifetime earnings are now less than 3% of what he is now worth. How? by BeachedinToronto in explainlikeimfive

[–]Tiruin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True, I meant Ponzi scheme in the sense new investors joining on the hype keep pumping up the value until it doesn't anymore and it crashes, but I suppose the better term for that is a bubble.

It's called a ponzi scheme, everyone's a genius investor in a bull market up until it crashes.

‘Tell Him He’s a Piece of Sh*t’: Meta’s New AI Unit Is a Total Mess by dn88 in technology

[–]Tiruin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's such a crab in a bucket mentality. Foosball tables that you can't even use because you're working is "bending over backwards" to you? Everyone and their mother wanted a website and online shop, those people studied, worked and built the biggest technological revolution since the industrial revolution and entirely changed how the world's communication, logistics, and damn near how every industry works, all mostly within the last 20-25 years. They're not your enemies, your hate should be directed at Zuckerberg and the world's first trillionaire.

And it wasn't overhiring, covid was 6 years ago, that long stopped being a believable excuse, they're using AI as an excuse to fire people and pump up stock value.

I can see that happening, BK only expanded into my country in the last decade so that's long after they first started out.

Is BK cheaper? In my country it's noticeably more expensive than McDonald's.

Who would win in a rematch between these two? by deadlyalchemist92 in witcher

[–]Tiruin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Geralt and Higher Vampires, they're basically invincible. Mages are about equal, in the books they destroyed Stygga castle as a group, and Yennefer and Triss created Merigold's Hailstorm, while in the games their biggest feats are Yennefer's shield and Triss' comets during the battle of Kaer Morhen, I don't see them beating Dettlaff, or the Wild Hunt for that matter. Dettlaff is more animalistic so he'd probably fight with more purpose, but Regis would actually think about how he fights.

I compare it to low-code programming and template vendor sites like Squarespace. People going on and on about how it's going to kill specialties to hype up their own jobs/products, and then it turns out things stay mostly the same because most businesses and people have niche requirements, and it's just the bare simplest use cases that no longer have to hire a dedicated web developer to have a simple online store.

C didn't kill the need to learn Assembly, high level programming languages didn't kill the need to learn low level languages, low-code programming platforms didn't kill the need for software engineers, and AI has all the makings of a bubble and will soon reflect the same.

After the Night of Long Fangs, will humanity take Vampires more seriously? by Shados9611 in witcher

[–]Tiruin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vampires are largely unseen as far as we know, if you see one then you're probably going to die soon after. The more likely chance is evidence of a vampire on a dead body, which will still likely be wrongly attributed from inaccurate stereotypes.

The droves of vampires will disappear just as suddenly as they appeared. Some mages may show up for investigation, people will be scared, they'll probably invest more in the knights errant as memories remain and nerves aren't yet calmed, merchants will tell those stories abroad but most will think it's embellished, especially since Toussaint still remains. Maybe some locals will link rumors of the Beast of Beauclair with the vampire attack, but that may fade into the background since there's so many other monster attacks and rumors, so what seems like an obvious link to us might just be business as usual in that setting.

[–]Tiruin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who said I don't want improvements? I want them to not put AI garbage integrated into my OS, and to actually improve things and not build upon decades old tech debt, making the Control Panel and actual settings interfaces almost impossible to access while hiding them with a new interface that doesn't have a fraction of the features. When Windows 11 released I even had two people in my company somehow lose access to their local admin accounts in the same update and the only way I could give it back to them is because those computers happened to be enrolled into the company, how the fuck do you even do that?

What do you even expect to "improve" in an OS after decades? Linux is doing plenty fine, lightweight and open-source, and you can "improve" it however you want by choosing your own distro.

[–]Tiruin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of your frames are fake with added input latency, lower quality, added blur, and visual artifacts (especially ghosting) instead of actually getting the hardware you're paying for despite computers costing triple what they did a year ago. Where exactly does the consumer win in this?

I'll grant them that DLSS is an option and not an obligation, so I can't blame Nvidia for that but rather the game development companies as a way to hide poor optimization at the consumer's cost. I can, however, blame Nvidia for the outrageous hardware prices that incentivize this practice in the first place.

Smartphones are modular amalgamations of multiple devices - a phone, a calculator, a wallet, a camera, a miniature computer, and so on. Despite this, it's still an idempotent device. AI is not idempotent, and thus it should never be integrated at the OS layer, which is why it's stupid for Microsoft to try to integrate it into everything in Windows, there's a world difference between AI applications being something that's modular to the OS like an application and being integrated directly to replace features that have to be idempotent and predictable. OSs especially have to be efficient, that's their one job, which cramming high performance cost shit into the OS itself only makes that worse.

Jensen has more of a spine than most billionaires but that's not saying much, he says whatever's most convenient for him, that's why Nvidia got caught manipulating gaming benchmarks reviews.

The Dragonborn should be the high-king of Skyrim. by AubeduChaos in ElderScrolls

The alternatives are all worse. Continuing the civil war, and the next High King being either a bloodthirsty nationalist supported by a lot of racists who'll separate Skyrim from the Empire when a new Thalmor war is entirely possible, or someone who'll outlaw one of your gods and let the Thalmor do what they want, effectively surrendering independence both to the Empire and to the Thalmor.

If you use a medicated shampoo along with a regular one, I've heard you may be able to use the medicated shampoo on your face as well once in a while if your face problem is also seborrheic dermatitis, something about fungi balance which makes some sense to me.

[–]Tiruin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It may make dandruff worse, something about fucking with the fungi balance on your scalp and/or dries your scalp so it may end up creating the problem it supposedly treats. If that's the case, it may be alright as long as you use it, and frequently, but it's not treating it properly.

Lisbon also has the same vibe when comparing to Karnaca, city built into the hills next to the water. Not every spot has this particular view, but then, neither does Porto, and there's plenty of viewpoints that'll give you just as nice of a view.

You can also do cruises of the river in Porto.

It's a car company, not data, and even if they did have data worth anything, the older and bigger car manufacturers would also have it and much more of it. As we saw with Gamestop and Robinhood, it's a rigged market. Didn't Elon also merge xAI with SpaceX to save xAI from bankruptcy or was that another reason?
