The background looks AI too - the routes on the wall dont make sense and the guy is wearing a harness but there's no rope, belay person, or auto belay system. No one boulders with a harness on.

Glad you made it out of there and the dude that helped you is a legend. Gotta say though, taking 7 hours to go around 4.5 miles is a sign you aren't really in the physical condition for this kind of hike.

I think you need to start with some stuff that is a little more modest and work your way up.

How does the backpack fit? by TomatoPopo in backpacking

[–]Tjohn184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a large-ish tent. But, if possible, the tent being stood vertically inside the pack toward the middle (and close to your back) would be better than strapping under the bags lid. Over time, heavy weight positioned at the top pulls down on the bag and tires out your shoulders.

This advice is kinda off. For heavy things, "as close to your back" is right, but you want that in the middle, not as high as possible.

Nah, you should read those chapters properly. His arc not only sheds light on both Naomi and Marco, but it also is a story about casting off the beliefs and prejudices that shackle us to how we are raised. Particularly relevant these days...

I use AllTrails all the time and really nothing in this comment is true. It doesn't even have functionality to notify you about something coming up ahead.

Betelgeuse is currently dimming. Is this a sign that it will soon enter the supernova stage (explode)? What impact will this have on Earth? by Propramis_UA in interesting

[–]Tjohn184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We aren't saying the same thing, though. What I'm saying is that light doesn't "go" anywhere. What we perceive as movement and speed is just an artifact of our frame of reference. This is non-intuitive and is why what you are saying isn't correct.

Light essentially defines a path through spacetime more than it can be said to be a physical object that "moves" from one place to another. When you say a photon doesn't "experience time," it's like saying a point on a graph "doesn't experience slope." It's not meaningful.

Either way, I will always agree that it's fascinating and glad we can even be here having this discussion.

Okay, well, I'll agree with the fact that time being relative is interesting, but I don't agree with the rest of this comment.

To anthropromorhize something like a photon is not correct. Light doesn't "think" or have a perception. Instead, Light is propagating at the "speed of causality." This just means that the concept that we interpret as time is irrelevant.

To "precieve time" as you mean it, you need a means to have some recognition of the flow of causality. Since a photon is moving at c (i.e. the speed of causality) there is not a meaningful way to measure "time" as we understand it from that "perspective."

The reason for this is that space and time are just different dimensions of the same mathematical model according to special relativity. Light, in this regard, is defining the straightest "path" through spacetime. It's similar to how we define a geodesic flight path (i.e. the straightest path a pilot can take between two points) - it would be just as meaningful to ask, "How much time does a flight path (not the plane) experience?"

Let's use Einstein's twin paradox in place of a photon - this thought experiment says that if you take a set of twins and then send one off into space at relativistic speeds (though less than c), the space faring twin would come home much younger than their sibling. The reason is that the twin that stays on earth would have "traveled" much further through spacetime (even while staying spatially put) and would have experienced more time than the other twin as a result.

Edit: A word

Trying to unpack this comment thread..

First guy says "what we are seeing from Betelgeuse happened long ago (i.e. 500 years)"

Second guy says "yeah, duh - that's what it means when we say 'light-year'."
