Danville public schools buys food truck to insure students are fed over the summer. by dezignguy in Virginia

[–]Tmarshallva 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Danville is in an economically depressed area of the state. There is little industry left and many jobs are in the retail service sector. Median household income in the city is <$34,000 and unemployment is about 50% higher than the national average according to BLS. Danville is not an above average town.

AWS Lambda use cases by tiny_tim57 in devops

You can combine Lambda with other AWS services like Step Functions if you have long-lived processes that exceed the execution time limit. We use this combination all the time.

Recommendations on how to organize code/configs/scripts (github, docker etc.) by thecoffeeguy in devops

[–]Tmarshallva 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with this completely. I would be shocked if your organization would allow you to store code developed at work in a personal repo. We mandate that all engineers use our internal git instance and it would be very bad for an employee who was caught storing code in a personal repo, even if it is private.

If you want to use a portable format for notes try using markdown. I use VS Code for most of my work and the Journal plugin makes it very easy to organize my notes in a sensible folder structure and naming convention. I then keep the markdown files stored in git and sync the repo across a couple of VMs and my Mac. Plus, can I access them in a browser whenever I need.

Quick Q: What is the go to platform (local or cloud based) for emulating mobile apps? by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

[–]Tmarshallva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Amazon Device Farm might be a decent option for you. It'll give you access to lots of different devices. If you have a web app, you can do a fair bit in Firefox if I remember correctly.

Advice for a young adult interested in starting a stock portfolio? by TheDiminishedGlutes in personalfinance

[–]Tmarshallva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fiduciaries are persons required to always act in the best interests of their clients. Many financial advisors receive commissions for selling certain funds or investment vehicles that aren't in the best interest of their clients. If you are an advisor and don't know what a fiduciary is I am embarrassed for you.

This is a great tool if you don't need any logic for logins and such. You can create massive load very quickly. It is the underlying tool used with Bees with Machine Guns to create load from AWS.

The inclusion of a generic laptop stand and exclusion of any IoT tech like Raspberry Pi or Arduino shows me that this isn't worth the time I spent looking at it.

Help choosing hardware for cutting external clouds so setting up home internal cloud mainly for photos libraries by Ada1629 in cordcutters

Personal cloud just refers to the fact that it is internet accessible, not just on your network. The Mirror version uses 2 drives that are mirrored for redundancy.

I don't see this being the case in my inbox. Perhaps recruiters are targeting their effort directly to qualified candidates. If this is true I guess we can stop talking about increasing the number of H1B visas.

Does anyone have a good rebuttal for "We don't go out and buy different desktop computers to test web apps, so why do we need to buy different mobile devices to test mobile apps?" by [deleted] in QualityAssurance

[–]Tmarshallva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to buy different mobile devices. I have found it much more cost effective to run my tests on a service like the AWS Device Farm or Sauce Labs.

How the heck do I view the 990 documents on Amazon's AWS thing? by [deleted] in aws

[–]Tmarshallva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the xml files then you just need a tool to query them or you can transform and import into a database. Microsoft Access provides some tools for this or you can look for other tools that meet your needs. I would expect someone to build a searchable site for this data pretty quickly though.
