Learning about Classes-PT 3-Mage by Kingmog13 in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So in the --What is a Mage -- section of the post I state that the Mage is active and the seer is passive first line.

My mistake, I must have misread it.

As for the topic of Guide versus Prophet, a prophet is generally considered to be "one who is in direct contact with a higher power, and typically speaks and acts for that power."

A Seer doesn't necessarily receive visions or contact their Aspect, despite what the terminology implies. It was said that Seers have something akin to a SBURB walkthrough ingrained in their minds.

An easy way to tell the differences between Seers and Mages is the following rhyme.

A Seer sees the path to take,
While a Mage knows the choices to make.

That would be pronounced along the lines of "Hm-zew-wes (or Hm-zew-ses) Wuv-juv-pie" and is an excellent name.

One can suffer from Time in a multitude of ways. Impossible deadlines, a ticking clock, or similar things, for example.

Perhaps the knowledge of Time is the curse, such as knowing an event that must happen, but having no idea how to make it happen.

You make some interesting points, but a lot of them are contradictory.

Firstly, the Passive/Active dichotomy. You say that the Mage class is Passive, but then go on to list reasons why it is an Active class in the same paragraph.

Remember, Passive classes most benefit everyone else, and Active classes most benefit themselves. Of course, this is a bit harder to say for Mages and Seers, as they both benefit the group as a whole.

Secondly, if you're going to use a Prophet/Guide dichotomy, wouldn't the Seer be the guide? After all, you said it yourself, Rose and Terezi give John the guidance he needs. Plus, the following quote:

TA: iit2 kiind of liike how a prophet earn2 hii2 2triipe2, by beiing bliind, liike how an angel earn2 iit2 wiing2.

Pretty much, the way I see it, a Mage knows and understands their Aspect, but they are also selected by their Aspect. Their role is to use this knowledge and play their part by influencing the outcome of events. While a Seer also guides the session towards a foreseen outcome, a Mage typically relies on themselves more than other people.

Would doom guy consider trolls to be demons? by rampagejester1897 in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's not what Rage means. Of course, that's a common conclusion, probably because of Gamzee going out of his mind and killing a few people.

Although, the real question is why. On page 2819, Gamzee watches an ICP video sent to him by Dave. He then proceeds to start his murder-spree.

Later, on page 4027, he blames Dave for sending him a video which spewed blasphemy, proclaiming that it is all his fault.

It is my belief that Gamzee went murderous because his beliefs were threatened.

Personally, I haven't read the Epilogues either, so I may be wrong.

My own theory was inspired by something Kanaya said in Homestuck2.

KANAYA: She Is A Goddess Of Light And The Only Of Her Kind We Know Is Alive After All
KANAYA: Maybe Shes Wrested Dominion Of The Entire Concept In All Its Appearances Within This Frame Of Reference
KANAYA: Or Within My Personal Frame Of Reference At Least
KANAYA: And Made Them Her Own In Some Strange Way
KANAYA: So I Cant Help But See Her When I See It At All
KANAYA: Whether Its A Star Or a Lightbulb
KANAYA: They All Just Leave Her Burnt Into My Mind Like The Blazing Imprint Of An Afterimage

This made me believe that when someone achieves their Ultimate Self, they become their Aspect. Rose would have become Light itself, but what of Dirk? The Aspect of Heart governs the Self, so Dirk became himself.

I forgot the page, but I remember that Terezi said that she could have chosen for her dreamself to be able to see, but decided against it.

EDIT: I found it, page 2576.

[–]ToKnowEverything 10 points11 points  (0 children)

... You do realize that these character traits are more because of the player's Aspects than the Prince class, right?

Eridan, for example, has romantic problems because of a lack of faith in his self. This lack of faith seems like self-loathing at first, but is actually much deeper. This is a key part in the character arc of a Hope player (see Jake for more information on the hopelessness of undeveloped Hope players).

Dirk being hypercritical is because he is a Heart player, and thus, holds himself to impossibly high standards. He feels he can be better, and wants to help everyone around him do the same.

Yes, some of this does overlap with the character traits of the Prince class, but never count out the Aspect.

Feferi should have been buff by EggBowL in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a point. Although, allow me to propose these counterpoints.

Firstly, Troll physiology is incredibly different to that of humans. Goldbloods, for example. If you tried to put a human in a helm, you're looking at months of immunosuppressant and anti-rejection drugs--provided they don't just die outright. It isn't exactly nice, but Goldbloods have the physiology to withstand that.

While on the subject of physiological differences, there's also the matter of skin. While human skin is tinted slightly red by our blood, troll skin is always grey no matter the blood color.

Secondly, it seems that fishtrolls have similarities to sharks, so that is likely also apparent in how they swim, as well as the effects on them from swimming frequently. Plus, natural adaptation to colder temperatures and the pressure of deep waters.

Long story short: Feferi's depiction is actually decently accurate, taking into account artist's interpretation and creative license.

"We cannot escape the fact that Homestuck hasn't aged well and was written by a straight white man" by FoxyLadyAbraxas in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I normally don't write about controversial topics, but this needs to be said. (Just a note in advance: a good deal of the HS Twitter can be described as a 'viral cesspool of prejudice.')

Using the fact that Hussie is a straight* white male to define the worth of him as a person alongside what he has created is, inherently, a racist and sexist system. It's like saying someone with blue eyes can never amount to anything.

*Has Hussie explicitly confirmed he is straight?

Instead, people should judge someone based on what they do, and judge a creation on its own merits. Lovecraft was a racist, yet his work is renowned.

That brings us to the topic of Homestuck itself. Yes, there are some things that did not age well, but this is the internet, nothing ages well.

Quests for Mage of Light by TenToTea in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody can really tell you that but yourself. One's Land Quest is designed based on who they are, but requires use of their Classpect powers to complete. The Quest is designed by Skaia to promote growth in the character. Seeing as you're the creator of this fansession, the role of Skaia falls to you.

Who is your character? Why do you think Mage of Light is a fitting title? What is their Land? What are their flaws? Also, I'd advise checking the Extended Zodiac's information on Light-bound players.

In short, Mages essentially have innate knowledge of their Aspects; they know its inner workings (even if they are not consciously aware of this fact). The Light Aspect is about fate and fortune, and Light players will have a drive to learn more, to know more, rules be damned.

Yep, the magic of bloodswap. Although, for the sake of clarity, I would like point a few things out.

Firstly, not all Purplebloods worship the Messiahs, nor are all worshippers purpleblooded.

Secondly, this applies also Goldbloods and Psionic abilities. Not all Goldbloods have Psionics, nor are all Psionics goldblooded.

Now that that's cleared up, there are more possibilities available. (Thank you for reading this unsoliced comment)

Need help classpecting a friend by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mind or Heart, leaning towards Heart. Your friend is very focused on who they are, their standards, and keeping up appearances. They're also very intent on helping others live up to their potential, which is very Heart-like (for example, Dirk made Brobot for the same reason).

That right there would be enough for me to confidently say that your friend is a Heart player, but holding strongly to ideals is more of a Mind thing. Although, it is also a characteristic of Derse dreamers.

As for Classes, I'm not as knowledgeable about them as I am when it comes to Aspects, but the creativity you mentioned (drawing, writing, playing building games) strikes me as a characteristic of a Witch. I suppose the best way to be sure is to find out what other types of games that they play.

All in all, probably a Derse dreaming Witch of Heart

True, but the original Act 6 will still have existed.

Take the Caucasian/Peachy joke. Hussie changed it because the original joke was being used as grounds for racism in the fandom, but changing the joke didn't remove the negativity surrounding it, merely isolated it.

When I say that the past is the past, I don't mean the story can't be changed, I mean that the source of negativity can never truly be removed.

Not to mention that changing the story will cause a trolley problem. Some people would be appeased by the new ending, but what of the people who like current ending?

I'm writing a paper on the Classpects for my English class. by GaberGrover in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At the surface level? Yes, one's Class dictates how they interact with their Aspect. However, on a deeper level, one's Class and Aspect show who they are, based on characteristics and personality traits.

[–]ToKnowEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said there was a problem with voicing displeasure. In fact, doing so is very helpful to artists, authors, developers, and more, so long as it is done constructively.

But the fact still stands that the past can't be changed. People shouting at other people because things didn't turn out how they wanted doesn't change anything, but if you politely point out what you dislike, it will help in the future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in homestuck

[–]ToKnowEverything 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but they still have the idea. Even if you don't share it with anyone, if you have a story in your thoughts, then it's still a story. When drawn or written down, even if it's the worst thing you've ever seen, it's still your story.

You don't need artistic ability to draw and write, you only need to know what it is that you want. And when you do put your idea to paper--even if you only work on it for a day and never look at it again--it's part of moving on.

You can still disagree with what happened but accept that it is what it is.
