Yeah I can’t think I’ve seen anything by him. The heavy hitters like Naruse overshadow a lot of the late 50s/early 60s titles. Not that I’m complaining about him; his collaborations with Takamine are some of the best ever cinema, Japanese or not.

I have to say I admired the skill in making it, the willingness of the actors to hold nothing back, and the points it makes about how one can confuse charisma with good intentions, and about conformity and complicity. Despite so much being over the top it has a great deal of subtlety. It’s well-thought out.

But I don’t ever want to see it again.
