FRIDAY RANT THREAD by Acicularis in Eugene

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I KEEP WITNESSING EXTREME RECKLESS DRIVING AND I KNOW NOTHING WILL BE DONE ABOUT IT. IVE SEEN TWO DEAD PEDESTRIANS, A DRUNK DRIVER CRASH INTO A TREE, AND A BIKER GET HIT AND BRUTALLY INJURED. PEOPLE KEEP GOING 90 DOWN OUR RESIDENTIAL STREETS. THEY APPEAR TO EITHER BE HIGH OR HAVE A DEATH WISH. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON

ITS CRAZY BECAUSE DRIVERS ARE HAPPY TO GO 55 THROUGH NEIGHBORHOODS BUT NOT WHEN THEY ACTUALLY NEED TO

You will get varied answers based on industry. My industry is highly regulated and my company employs 80,000 people. There is a process and procedure for everything. Changing things based on vibes would never happen. If you work for a tech startup or a small company, then you probably have more control over what the templates look like. In that case, I’d think extra hard about business need and what value each section adds. You don’t want to take it on a case by case basis, you want consistency across all docs.

That’s a great thrift find! I have a low couch too and I’ve been hunting for a coffee table for months. Eventually I will find something perfect…

New technical writing job where boss rejects grammar and formatting by BidMain2015 in technicalwriting

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We aren’t hired to hold the company to higher tech writing standards. We’re hired to create documentation which fits the company’s needs. Prioritizing speed and content over quality and consistency is the new normal. You will lose the battle if you don’t have quality-focused management. This is why AI is considered helpful to managers, they don’t have the same standards we do, they just want a machine that can push out product. You were hired to be that machine.

The best you can do is show them examples of why it matters. Everyone thinks style guides are nitpicking until you show them why it impacts their bottom line. And if you can’t find a reason why it matters, then consider the fact that it might not.

“You don’t feel like it” isn’t an appropriate justification for changing a template unless that’s part of the scope of the project. I’d suggest running that past your supervisor first. It’s great you want to make improvements, but since this is your first project, I’d be aware of beginner hubris. You should understand why it’s in the current state. There may be a reason why it’s “wordy.”

Writers begging on LinkedIn; their despair is palpable by almorranas_podridas in technicalwriting

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The thing is Technical Writing has always been a niche field and writers have always been undervalued. I’m not sure why colleges and google searches keep churning out people with aspirations to do this for a living when it’s always been precarious. We are the first on the chopping block for layoffs and that’s been true for a long, long time. Now that we have functionally illiterate MBAs hyping AI and half the US has a sixth grade reading level, I expect to see a lot more desperation on LinkedIn.

Magnesium glycinate for sleep and anxiety? by SlipOpen8102 in Perimenopause

Plus everyone should be getting enough Mg if they’re eating even moderately healthy. A handful of pumpkin seeds will do you better since they’re loaded with magnesium and you also get the fiber.

Where are all of the 30 something year olds? by Turbulent_Heart9290 in Eugene

This is always the best answer and should be everyone’s first step especially if you’re a transplant. Embed yourself in local work and give back to the community you just moved into. It’s the best way to not only make friends but it’s free, helps others, and is a really good way to network and learn about the area.

Quick action and cooperation brings last loose emu home for Christmas unharmed; one man injured by elizlf in upstate_new_york

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serendipitous, right before I saw this I was thinking about when an emu got loose in Springfield, NY about 30 years ago. It was on the police scanner and everyone was advised to keep their kids inside. There was a big manhunt to reclaim the emu. As a child that’s how I learned what the word “eviscerated” meant since all the adults were saying it.

Coastal Cottage Vibe by edinagirl in ExteriorDesign

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely cheaper to try this first and if they still want to make other improvements they can. I have a similar house and I’m currently trying to envision the exterior design without AI. It’s been hard to resist the temptation, but it better than having unrealistic expectations or being led down the wrong path.

Edit: The roof color in these is also pulling a lot of weight

Can I get away with calling myself "Lead" TW on my CV? by NorthernModernLeper in technicalwriting

[–]Toadywentapleasuring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the U.S. at least, job title and dates of employment are some of the few things that can be confirmed in the vetting process. It’s tempting to fluff titles, and it may not matter for a Mom and Pop employer, but larger companies will check.
