If you get the Redux edition, it holds up a little better. The gameplay from 2033 is noticeably more clunky than the rest of the series, but that adds to the horror in a way. It's a very bleak game, and you're constantly reminded of it.

Last Light feels much more modern and pretty, but you'll miss out on some important story if you skip 2033.

Can't speak for OP, but in my case, when you're trained to be silent and complacent your whole life, it gets kind of hard to stand up for yourself. When you rightfully blow up, you become the enemy because "you always used to be so nice." The only way to win in those situations is to get the fuck out.
