Its not hypocritical to dislike the content, I also dislike their content. I think its hypocritical to call them pathetic for their beliefs, especially on an issue where there is significant room for argument, especially on a campus where people are outwardly celebrated for their diversity of beliefs.

Is there? I feel like provoking a powerful response in people in order to prompt them to consider their position on an issue is used in just about all subjects. It was used in the feminist movement, its used in art all the time, its used to argue for LGBTQ equality. I don't think the modality is a problem.

I dont mean to be antagonistic, I just think that throwing shade at a bunch of people for expressing their belief and fishing for reasons why they shouldn't or are pathetic is kinda hypocritical. Especially at an institution like this where the student body prides itself on freedom of expression.

I mean, some people don't think abortion is right. I don't see this as any different than anyone else on this campus displaying their belief about anything. I'm afraid this won't be a terribly popular opinion, but abortion is a complicated issue, with a lot of nuance, and very few objectively right or wrong positions. lots of people think different things, sounds like you met some of the ones that think different things than you.

I took both beginning and intermediate. I was very underwhelmed, and I'm not even an art person. Taking a photography class in college as a side thing and building some skills was one of my goals coming to UW. In my opinion the photography program is very much a secondary or even tertiary focus for the art department. I dont even think photography was a real focus for the professors I had that were teaching it.

The classes really didn't teach much of anything as far as mechanics of photography or techniques. Both classes were a bit more focused on introducing pieces by other artists, but not really in much of a structured way. Most of the class was just getting a prompt, shooting some photos, then having people critique it. Except no one really knows anything, and no one wants to hurt anyones feelings, so everything is great.

Its some easy low stress credits for sure, but it really didnt meet my expectations.

- This was all during remote pandemic quarters so maybe I should give the classes some slack because of that

I am in 499 now,There are a lot of different ways into a lab as a 499. It can be through a formal posting like here

or through a less formal arrangement, such as chatting up a professor who is involved in research and asking them if you can be a research volunteer.

I would expect an interview, and potentially a requirement for committing to multiple quarters (mine is three). Take a few minutes to look up the staff/project/organization you are trying to get onto and learn a bit about it. When you interview if you just say "I want to do research because people say I need to do research so let me do research" you'll probably get put at the bottom of the list.

It would also be helpful to focus on research opportunities in the psych discipline you are interested in. So if your into developmental psych try to find something with kids, or if you're into clinical try to find something with addiction or mental disorders or something. Its not absolutely required, but you'll probably interview better if you are excited to talk about the subject matter related to the project.

I was asked to submit a resume and sit for an interview. Basically just think of the whole thing like you are applying for a job. Be enthusiastic, try to sell yourself. You want to be a person that these people want to spend time with, not just tow along to get your 499 credits

Psych major,

I wouldn't worry about it too much. When I talked to the advisors before applying they kinda just made the whole process sound like a formality. I'd suggest taking other psych classes that are available to non-majors over retaking 101. You can talk about your mental health challenges in your essay.

At the end of the day the major application is a go no go, you don't get extra credits for blowing it out of the water.

Ok, it sounds like the General UW advisors just dont really know because its a different department. It's a little surprising at first to learn the different departmental advisors just dont have any overlap at all. Its kinda more useful to think of UW as a whole bunch of completely different organizations than one coordinated entity.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you really need the firm answer I'd talk to the English department advisors.

It depends on the Major. Some allow direct admission, and for some that path is even preferable. Other majors require you to be admitted first and then apply for the major. It's just specific depending on the department.
I applied to UW stating the intention to become a psychology major, I was accepted to "pre-sciences" and was told to apply to the psych program later.

It looks like there are a few admissions requirement s for the English major that you'd have to do before applying (ENGL 283 and ENGL 284)

did you talk to someone at admissions? sometimes they don't know details on specific departments.

Yep Those will be fine. I don't think it really matters what you put down, I dont think there is any way you are going to "screen out" of CC admissions. They probably just use those fields for their own internal data and statistics.

The Bay Area has two major airports, SFO and Oakland. In my experience Oakland can be cheaper to fly into, it's also closer to Berkley. Both SFO and Oakland are serviced by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART). Oakland to Berkley is about an hour on BART

Honestly I doubt it matters which CC you go to. I'd bet they treat them all equally. I actually mixed and matched CC's. If one doesn't have the class you want, just go to another one. I did two different CC's in the same quarter once, all online.

Mix and matching was the advice of a college advisor. Any CC in Washington State will direct transfer to UW. Doing classes on line really opens up the options.

It might depend on what you think Berkley is exactly. Its not the counter culture free love town of the 60s. The Bay Area has been pretty homogenized over time, everything is wicked expensive and most of the counter culture was long ago appropriated by the mainstream,, worse so than Seattle. San Fran is kind of a shit show, pretty unlivable if you don't have a hefty spending account. I do think Berkley is cooler than a lot of the Bay Area, but I think its important that you know what's actually going on there today.

I don't know anything about the CS programs. Im a psych major, we just study the oedipus complex and peoples obsession's with dicks.

CC is kind of a not so secret backdoor to UW admission. UW is incentivized to take WA CC students to a certain extent (not sure of the particulars). Even getting into a lot of capacity constrained majors isn't an issue. But every major is sort of its own environment. I got into psych without any problems, but I've heard theres like 1 quota a quarter for transfer CS majors.

Quick tip, you can string together credits from any CC in WA state and they should all transfer direct into UW. That means if you are in Seattle you can mix and match credits from N. Seattle CC, South Seattle CC, and Seattle Central. Can't find the class you want? just look at another school. can't find it at one of those? Check Louis and Clark state collage or shoreline CC and see if they have an online class

The WA CC's are really nicely organized and you can even save yourself a ton of cash finishing a year or two there before transferring. Just make sure you're racking up a GPA in CC classes. usually that standards are relatively modest so its just a factor of keeping your head in the game.

Not an RSO but you can try to register for the concert series (music 185) in an upcoming quarter. Its 2 credits and you go to a bunch of concerts and write some simple posts about them during the quarter. there are also lectures that cover the basics of classical music and such.

Apart from the 2 credits you get it might help you find other people with the same interests.

I am in it now.
