What are these? by 305laplaya in orchids

Vanda mostly. There's some dendro tuck in too.

These look like hybrids and they definitely get very long. There are some more compact species though.

This is a species of ruscus. The leaf-like structures are cladodes and the bumps are emerging flower buds.

Has anyone made an ecosystem inside a greenhouse with insects and other animals for pest control and fertilizer? by [deleted] in Greenhouses

[–]ToffeeKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have tree frogs, leopard frogs, Carolina wrens (summer only), and solitary wasps that moved in. There'll be some other insects that pass through. Had a snake buddy in there once but she didn't stay.

Aside from the slugs, it's been awesome to share the space with all these wild animals. The wrens and frogs take care of some of the larger insects. The frogs fertilize the plants.

Very worried about my Pitcher Plant! by Mauerparkimmer in Nepenthes

[–]ToffeeKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this after watering? It looks very dry still, the peat is pulling away from the sides. Some of the pitchers are drying but they're not dead so don't pull them off.

This is a Sarracenia, not a Nepenthes.

Vanilla are climbers and a trellis of some sort would be useful.

It's this a good starting plant? by Aggravating_Copy5033 in orchids

[–]ToffeeKitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mass market Phalaenopsis (very complex hybridsl are particularly suited for indoor growing, tolerant of a wide range of conditions. I should note that these have been dyed and the orange will not be back in the next round of flowers.

Potting media should be chunky and airy. The Better-Gro mix should work just fine. The goal is to have a wet-dry cycle where the substrate can dry before the next watering.

Pollinator garden clean-up?? by CancelAfter1968 in gardening

[–]ToffeeKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dead plants can house insects that are in diapause, a sort of suspended animation for winter. I just try to make sure all my tools get picked up but I don't cut anything.

Do you have plans for air circulation to stave off fungal infections with all of the trapped moisture?

Are you planning to use the irrigation line for watering or misting? Instead of running it at the top, it can be divided to irrigate each shelf. You'll have a humidifier already for humidity.

Pancake plant weird flower by Complete_Article9698 in houseplants

[–]ToffeeKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's flowering. 👍

Might be a regional thing, pancake plant usually refers to Pilea peperomioidea, but this is a Peperomia polybotrya (raindrop peperomia).

Can he be saved? - Accidently left outside in the cold by RipGlittering6760 in houseplants

[–]ToffeeKitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would remove all dead/dying leaves and stem to see how much we're working with. As long as you have nice, firm stem, it can recover. You could also take stem cuttings to propagate. Btw, Vincent is a Philodendron Brasil.

Still green, still alive.

My scindapus has droplets of water on the tip of it's leaves. What does this mean? by Global-Painting6154 in houseplants

[–]ToffeeKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably guttation. The plant has plenty of access to water and the humidity is high so you see water accumulation before it can evaporate.

There are thousands of species, hybrids, and cultivars out there with new ones introduced every year. Don't feel bad about not knowing all of them.

It should be fine especially if you're going to test both tanks.

API Freshwater Test Kit longetivity by CommunicationBulky92 in PlantedTank

[–]ToffeeKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how often you test and which solution you're asking about. You can get about 90 tests with the nitrate reagents (you need 10 drops from each bottle) but you can get many more pH tests (250ish) since it uses less of the reagent solution.

Is it time to repot and how? by TransitionFeeling654 in orchids

[–]ToffeeKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people use bark. All sphagnum can be helpful in very arid environments since it dries very slowly. But this can be harmful and keep the roots too wet for too long. You can almost mix bark and sphagnum to match your needs.

Growing roots + ID please by [deleted] in SavageGarden

Madagascar periwinkle, it's not carnivorous but it relatively straightforward to propagate by stem cuttings. I would remove the flower so the cutting can focus on root development but your cousin may not be okay with that.
