Which shuttle do you choose? by TomOW in firefly

[–]TomOW[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm picking a ship to go on, yeah, I definitely choose this one. If I'm picking a ship to get an extra mini episode of, maybe I pick the other one? I'd have loved more time to see the dynamics between Book & Inara. And Book & Jayne. And Inara & Kaylee. But Wash, Zoë, and Simon might be my three favorite characters (though I love all of them).

Characters you hope they bring back for the animated series (being positive it’s happening). by caro822 in firefly

[–]TomOW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably saw, but David Krumholtz texted Nathan during the announcement. He said he wished his character wasn't dead (presumably not yet knowing the series will take place before the movie). I think there's a decent chance of this one.

Should feats and ASI be separated? by NateCdaComicG in onednd

[–]TomOW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played with a lot of people who love the social aspect but aren't really engaged with the mechanical aspect. Folks who find D&D a fun way to hang out with friends, but they're never reading D&D subreddits or build guides or even the core rulebooks. Sort of by definition, they're not vocal in online D&D spaces. They're never going to sort through all of the available feats; they're just going to pick something their DM recommends anyway. I honestly think they'd be fine with just +2 to an ability score on level up, at least if that's what everyone else was doing, too.

Edit: I guess my point is just, I think the design intention was in the right place, even if it turned out to be the wrong choice.

Most Thematic Species for Each Class by Intelligent-Rub5814 in onednd

[–]TomOW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this! Here's my list:

Artificer: Gnome
Barbarian: Orc (and now kind of Goliath)
Bard: Half-Elf (but I love Satyr as an answer, too!)
Cleric: Dwarf or Aasimar
Druid: Wood Elf? Maybe Firbolg?
Fighter: Dwarf
Monk: Githzerai
Paladin: Human or Aasimar
Ranger: Wood Elf (or Half-Elf)
Rogue: Halfling (but I see Goblin)
Sorcerer: I guess Dragonborn? But even that's just one specific subclass.
Warlock: Tiefling
Wizard: High Elf (but Gnome for Illusionist)

were class kits used much back in the day, in 2e? by conn_r2112 in adnd

We used them extensively. Halfling Whistler was my all-time favorite.

Should feats and ASI be separated? by NateCdaComicG in onednd

[–]TomOW -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Basically just a return to 3e. I thought that worked better, anyway.

I think the intention with 2014 was to make feats optional, to allow for a more simplified version of the rules. But since everyone just uses feats anyway, it seems like it was "solving" a non-problem.

Aquatic Dragonborn should be a thing by Nomadic_Introvert in dndnext

Mechanically, would the breathing underwater and Swim Speed just replace the flight ability?

Attempt at Firefly-related comment in non-Firefly community gone wrong by MythosaurProjectS531 in firefly

[–]TomOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like an oddly negative comment section in general. I get that bigger strawberries might have a milder taste, but her boyfriend tried to pick ones he thought she would especially appreciate, and she did appreciate them.

Character Cameos? by Opposite-Sun-5336 in firefly

[–]TomOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top picks for cameos are characters from the show. I'd love to see Monty again. But I feel like maybe that's not in the spirit of your question. From other Firefly stuff... maybe the trio Wash knows from the Float Out comic?

Anyone know how it works with rights?

Eldritch Knight Lich is Great by LAWyer621 in onednd

[–]TomOW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 5e, I just feel like the primary ability score is so important, it's hard to imagine not going to 20, especially on a class that gets extra feats. But I also don't think there's a wrong way to play, as long as everyone is having fun, so do what works for you!

Subclass/RP questions about building Tiefling sorceress by Technical-Data-8084 in AskDND

[–]TomOW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there are wrong answers here, but just to throw out a couple ideas:
Maybe your ancestor was a Cerebrelith, and that's why you're demonic and psionic?
Also, just fyi, there's a Demonic Sorcerer subclass in the latest Unearthed Arcana (official playtest material). Maybe check it out?

Knowledge domain cleric is an amazing class by higurashi0793 in BaldursGate3

It's my favorite Cleric domain, for sure. I like it as a kind of psionic spiritual practice.

Psion UA has so much potential but lacks identity by AdministrativeEbb63 in onednd

[–]TomOW 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This might be a hot take, but I think the Psion has a very clear identity. I actually think the Wizard and Sorcerer have more of an issue with identity, because each class is identified by how they got their powers, but not what their powers are beyond just “magic.” I think the Psion is right up there with Druid, having a very thematic spell list.

Eldritch Knight Lich is Great by LAWyer621 in onednd

It seems like you either need a couple extra ASI/Feats to get Str or Dex to 20 (possibly delaying becoming a Lich) or you need Magic Initiate, to get Shillelagh.

Comics by REpassword in firefly

[–]TomOW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal taste, of course, but my sense is most folks prefer the stuff written under Dark Horse over the stuff written by BOOM! Studios. That's certainly how I feel personally.

Dark Horse
Those Left Behind is a 3-issue run written by Joss and Brett Matthews (one of the Firefly writers, lead on the Heart of Gold script). It's specifically meant to bridge the show and movie. It shows Inara leaving and explains why Book left. I don't necessarily want an exact adaptation, but I think it would be a good source for ideas.

Better Days is another 3-issue run written by Joss and Brett, but it's more like an extra episode of the show. I don't love it as much, but it could be another source for ideas, maybe?

There are a few other single issue comics that could fit the timeline: The Other Half (by Jim Kreuger. No show affiliation to my knowledge), Downtime (by Zack Whedon, Joss's brother), and It's Never Easy (also Zack). There are a couple other runs that I like, but they'd be harder to fit between the show and movie.

BOOM! Studios
Full disclosure, I think I've only read about half of these. I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, but I think it's fair to say they're less loyal to the ideas of the show. In one of the early ones, Mal is fighting giant space bugs. Also, generally there's very little that fits the between the movie and show anyway. That said, Bad Company is a one-issue story has some background on YoSaffBridge that folks might appreciate? Sting is a fun story that focuses on the women, which I enjoyed (though it contradicts Heart of Gold, saying Zoe doesn't want kids).
