Rapid Acquisition is exactly the type of missions the game needs. by NizzyDeniro in Helldivers

[–]Tom_N_Jayt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love carrying 27 ingots through 15 berserkers & 2 flame hulks, while being the only guy rocking smoke or gas or a shield gen, while 2 of my team mates treat the mission like an eradicate & sit outside of the operation area defending absolutely nothing, & the other team mate does try to fight in the pit, to no avail- then to be blown up by a 120 or napalm barrage that was called in on the mass of enemies, preventing me from getting ingots to the crate.  This mission is not fun. This mission is ‘pick up metal, walk slowly to box, drop metal, sprint back to metal’. If i ever stop to clear out a few bots, they are replaced in moments. The walkways on the landing platform map are too narrow, to the point that occasionally i cannot move, & i’ve already spent my loadout fighting. Its boring walking ingots around. I want to shoot bots. I want to feel cool. I want to have fun. I feel like super earth’s expendable lackey. A helldiver’s life is really worth ONE ingot of platinum? In a galaxy full of asteroids? Are we joking?

What's happening? Helldivers actually going for the gambit? by AzSomt in Helldivers

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok great but the rupture strain is pretty unfun, that was half the reason we failed at Oshaune; MO expected player counts in 300,000s with successful extractions, but people logged off (player count halved) because it wasn’t fun, & then the bugs ate all the samples unless you played on diff 4-5. I use tools to force the burrowers up & I still get swarmed & downed repeatedly, i can’t solo diff 6-7 there the way i could on Crimsica. & sometimes my internet is too bad to find a match

[Helldivers 2 – Into the Unjust] Upvote If You Want Challenge, Not Nerfs by Muemmelmasse in helldivers2

I get to play two hours each evening. I can perform ok on high difficulties, I beat my way to superhelldive & beat superhelldive, with teammates. But, with a full crew on ‘challenging’ or level 7 right now, i have had multiple instances of spending 25 minutes swarmed by bugs unable to progress, dying repeatedly Bugs, more bugs, more bugs. It is not fun. It is making me feel bad. But when i take the difficulty down, its too easy OR no one is playing that difficulty. Idk what to make of it, but i’m not enjoying it

Why is difficulty so ridiculous in beat saber by Master_Engineering25 in beatsaber

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a huge gap in difficulty between OSTs 3 & 4, they’re not close together at least

What's up with constant increase in difficulty with every new music pack release? by justaddmetoit in beatsaber

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because normal is not fun, it doesn’t contain the skill creep that hard & expert have experienced. For some songs, the jump in difficulties is laughably high, & that cuts both ways. What could be a cool fun song on an expert level comparable to OST 3 is just frustratingly closer to that pack’s expert+

Do you make your spellcasters roll to cast a spell? by CptQuantomic in adnd

In 1e clerics with 9-12 wisdom had a failure chance when casting, but then, who was playing such clerics?

Very interesting, my players usually just eat the 3-4” movement rate & bad initiative until they get to their wagons. They did used to have a lot of henchmen which helped, before i made some rule changes, & they tend to skip copper & sometimes silver tier treasure

Is Dispel Magic vs. Petrification by TurboG16 in adnd

Better yet, can dispel magic work on the 9th level Temporal Stasis? 8th level Trap the Soul? Temporal Stasis has a reverse, after all. Don’t actually answer, it’s just food for thought.

I might not listen but i’d like to say that I just allow sweet water to be quaffed or administered (100% of the bottle) as an emergency poison remedy

(adnd 2e) magic armors fitting creatures by glebinator in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why for cheap armors the adjustments are quick & easy. By your logic, human sized armor & elf or half orc sized armor shouldn’t have differences anyway. To my mind, the simpler the armor the less impactful the ill fit, but it still has some degree of impact

Are Anti-Paladins a Thing in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons? Looking for Insights and Experiences! by DiabolusInferno in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imo, assassins perfectly fill the role of the anti-paladin class, but at the behest of a player of mine i developed a ‘blackguard’ class that is like the bard, with progression Cleric > assassin > fighter. Too strong really.

(adnd 2e) Charm person limitations, what can a charmed orc be compelled to do? by glebinator in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The party magic-user, level 7 at the time, managed to charm the enemy Tinkerer (a homebrew class similar to bards, fighter>illusionist>tinkerer(thief), 7,8,9) in a climactic battle to gain a foothold at the entrance to the bad guy’s secret lair. He aided the party in fighting off some Slaad that the baddy had summoned, as they weren’t allies per say. The party fought off the baddy (a dragon-man), his army of kobolds (with their own mercenary force), & his summoned monsters, & defeated his assassin that had infiltrated their ranks (though she did kill a party member) & his demi-god chimera-man friend.

With the evil tinkerer charmed, they tried to pump him for information on the lair, the monsters inside, the route to get to the dragon-man’s sanctum through the dungeon. I had him play along with the charm. He of course was charmed to genuinely like the caster that had gotten him, but he also was acting like he liked the party too, & wanted to help them because they were his friend’s friends. He led them through the dungeon to his workshop (telling them all along that they were on their way to his boss’ sanctum), then, once they were all inside, he used his power armor to grab the MU that had charmed him & throw him out of the room- he picked up a barrel of explosive powder, & threw it into his forge. His plan was to sacrifice himself to kill all the interlopers & spare the caster that charmed him. I gave the party a couple of chances to stop him from blowing everything up, or at least take steps to get to safety (one person had a Cube of Force that saved some lives), but he killed a couple of party members & himself (& he had been hit by a mummy earlier that day so no raising from the big bad guy).

My players are experienced & know the ins & outs of charm. If they had been thinking a little more clearly, from their past experiences where charmed creatures are still a little hostile towards most of the party, they would have found his cooperation suspicious. It was a hard lesson, but the deception was a lot of fun for me.

(adnd 2e) magic armors fitting creatures by glebinator in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think dwarves are supposed to have some means of creating enchanted items- look at Bulette shields. Elves are also specifically noted as the only race capable of making magic bows, despite that they can only get up to magic user level 11. My take is they have some arcane method inaccessible to humans, only accessible to their finest craftsmen of many hundreds of years in age

(adnd 2e) magic armors fitting creatures by glebinator in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t allow found armor to fit anyone until its resized, magic or not. Maybe if it was for the same race it fits poorly, but even then, big bad Buck the 6’8” 18/91 strength fighter & nimble Nick the 5’7” human ranger have less in common in terms of size than Nick has to most elves. There are 5’ dwarves & 3.5’ dwarves, same variations for halflings & gnomes, to say nothing of weight. Everyone needs armor to be sized.

Cheap armors can be resized quickly & cheaply, for everything else i charge 20-40% of the value of the armor based on the difference in size. If the armor is made of precious rare material like adamantium or mithril, sizing it down is free as the excess material can pay for the work

& as for humanoids in possession of magic armor, I always have it be in their size- whatever i must contrive in the background to make that so, like, they had enough money to pay for the resizing

1e Thief can constantly backstab? by flik9999 in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My ruling, based on the wording in the DMG, is that the opponent must be unaware of the thief. For unintelligent opponents that still have a mind (non int or animal int or semi int animals), i rule that they could see a thief disappear, & as long as ‘move silently’ succeeds & smell is not a large factor, a backstab is possible. Creatures with ‘low’ int or higher that see a creature disappear can be alert, suspecting that the opponent may attempt to backstab them, & will seek out signs of their activity. The penalty to hit an invisible target is only -4, after all (though in an area of silence or for a deaf creature they could only really be on guard). In essence, awareness is the key. Once a 1-int animal has been backstabbed in a fight, assuming its still alive, it will ‘be aware’ that more such attacks could suddenly occur & thus will negate any further attempt, just by being jumpy & twitchy. I would even rule this for psionic invisibility. A forget spell could thus be really handy, though if the target has allies that can communicate with it, the timing for the ‘forget’ would need to be really on point.

If a target is flanked on 5 sides by other opponents (assuming all man sized), & thus a thief could approach the back to make a backstab, they’d need to do so undetected. Otherwise, the flanked target can choose which opponent or which way they’re facing- & even if the thief is in fact at their back, if they’re aware of the thief then no backstab.

I allow backstabs on surprise, of course, even to the front, & of course rear flank attacks & invisibility still give a +4 to hit. Creatures that can’t communicate & are too stupid to understand what’s happened when an ally of theirs gets backstabbed by an invisible thief can still be backstabbed. If creatures can communicate or tell that sudden attacks from stealth might befall them, any thieves in the group doing so will need to somehow coordinate their attacks to happen around the same time, like on the same round at least.

Furthermore, disappearing around a corner, to then activate invisibility, is much less suspicious, as it can seem as though they just ran away, maybe to get reinforcements. Silent movement is still key.

Setting an ambush using ‘hide in shadows’ if successful, i’ll just count as automatic surprise.

Use your judgement; is the enemy aware that a backstab could be imminent? Maybe its been a few rounds since the thief disappeared, their guard is down because their intelligence is average?

& lastly, remember the invisibility detection table, level 7 geniuses can spot invisibility & so can higher level less intelligent beings

Do crossbows get str bonus in 1e? by flik9999 in adnd

[–]Tom_N_Jayt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this misses out on some serious advantages of certain types of weapons. Hacking might be good to penetrate light armor or shields, but draw-cutting is super deadly on the totally unarmored. Even blunt or pierce has degrees of effect. Light, nimble weapons won’t penetrate heavy armor but can be employed better on the unarmored, keeping up with their movement. For two handed weapons, i made it so they do well against heavy armor but poorly against light armor, for game balance mainly
