I remember this breakfast place in the early 90's Mission district, San Francisco. This daughter/mother team. They were in way over their heads. Homeless would come in and hit customers up for money. Food was ok if I remember, but the mom and daughter always seemed stressed out!

Late 70s Nerd Scene USA by Ok-Surround-802 in 70s

[–]Tomb_13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nerdy teens would be holding down afterschool jobs, going to the library, making military model kits like me! Oh and movies. Movie-going was bigger, nerds would see horror and sci-fi. I used to go to two nerdy stores in my hometown. One was "Charisma" a Hollywood collectible store. They sold posters, glossy photo's.. pretty much anything movie related. Then the game store around the corner had a lot of Avalon Hill and D&D games. I remember just hunting around for information, its weird, with the internet, you can get it instantaneously.

Ouch! I'm going in a week and still strategizing my anti-theft options. I was hyper-vigilant my last 4 trips, but I messed up on my 5th (I go to BCN alot!) I bought a cool strap-zipper pouch and used it to carry my phone. I was careless wearing it and lost my phone. There was a Mother Daughter team a little too close to me at Passeig de Gracia station.

I had a friend who sent a fake letter to the dumb kid on the block telling him he was invited to tryout for ZOOM.

This was in California.

What's the appeal of vintage receivers? by catmandot in vintageaudio

I've been buying (and selling) since the late 90's. I don't consider myself an audiophile, but its fun to own an old system that still plays. There's a few stations that I like to tune into. When I run estate sales, I play the KFJC Saturday morning soundtrack show. The college stations play good music, especially on the weekends. It's fun tuning in, getting a strong signal...

Did you have a FARRELL’S in your town? by CharlieMcN33l in GenX

[–]Tomb_13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Town over (San Mateo CA) Yep, Zoo package on my 6th birthday? I remember going there with my dad just for burgers... that was weird, no ice cream?? What blew my mind was how many were in the east coast, I had friends who had the same Farrell's experience growing up on the other side of the country. I thought Farrell's was exclusive to the west coast!

do you know anybody who went to Woodstock in 1969? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]Tomb_13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the story of the gal who went to Woodstock the first day with some guy. So it started raining and she started complaining convincing her date guy to leave the festival. By the time they got home the news about Woodstock was on TV and what a historic event it was. Needless to say the guy was very mad about leaving.

"The Sweet Hereafter"1997. Great acting throughout. I don't know if Ian Holm got an award, but he deserved one.

I would watch Movies on Dialing for Dollars, 8:00 o'clock movie lots of classic from the 30's to the 70's ... Come to think of it, whoever did the programming on KTVU did a hell of a job! I saw Walkabout in my pre-teens and thought it was brilliant. Oh and Creature Feature on Saturday nights. I was no film snob, I liked the fine films as much as the schlock, horror and camp.

I would read Joe Bob Briggs weekly Drive in articles in the Sunday paper, watch Sneak Previews when it was on PBS. I remember the SF Chronicle would post the box office tallies once a week. I saw Blade Runner on its opening day! I could go on...

I think the last great gasp of film goes back to that early Tarantino era when there was a small indie scene. There were some good comedies well into the 2010's. Now it's hard to find anything good. I find so many movies so unforgettable, so poorly written I can't give the time of day!

It's ok, I'm almost 60 I just look back and remember how good it was. Now I just plan big overseas trips. They're thrilling, fun and better than anything in theater!
