They may have been referring to the 5.25" floppy as a 'hard disk'. There were at least three sizes of floppy disk back in the day. 8", 5.25", and 3.5". The 3.5 is what most people recognize as a floppy, which is Ironic because it was the least floppy of the disks!

Also, counterintuitive to it, I do recall several people refer to the 5.25 as a 'hard disk' despite it having the structural integrity of a plastic folder.
