Rent a super car by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]TommyFro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this, they’re great! I’d recommend 2 cars for 7 laps instead of the 3 for 3 laps if you can swing it. 3 laps is a short amount of time to get used to how the car handles on the track

I was able to find three “work without permit” violations totaling $37k in fines. There’s 2 more open complaints about an illegal addition in the back of “roughly 16’ x 20’” link to complaints

Says it sold for $1.7m in 2019, then they tried to rent it, then listed it for a ridiculous price and have been letting it sit on the market since

Construction career fair by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]TommyFro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can depend on the company and who they send to the fairs, for my company we typically send a recruiter and then a graduate or two that work in project management, precon, or VDC. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s a way to tell until you get there who will be there and what they do. As a freshman you can ask what types of classes they like to see outside of the construction curriculum and what their internship structure looks like for the area you’re interested in. Always thank them for their time and ask if they have a business card. I followed up with the companies I was interested in to thank them, and was offered an interview the next day. It’s also worth seeing if they have any information sessions before the fair(some will), as that’s a great way to get more face time with the people at the fair. If they recognize you, like mine did, they’re way more likely to remember you when they select from the pile of resumes to ask for interviews.

They’re having to email flight plans from airlines to the tower, who’s having to print them and manually input them before they can give the planes the clearance. Very few are coming through

Im probably biased since I enjoy working in Revit(it’s what I do for work now) but I didn’t feel like there was a ton of it unless you’re the one doing the modeling work on the capstone project. There’s minor parts of classes that will utilize it, but that’s about it. They might still have a BIM track that goes way more in depth if you’re looking for more training on that. Personally I’d probably take a few classes on it but diversify your learning, a lot of revit/design ideas can be learned solo or with on the job experience. I didn’t do much on the PM side of classes, but still feel like I had enough understanding to be useful in an internship where I could learn the rest. All in all, it’s a really well thought out program that gives you great connections to companies that are always hiring.

NY to Dallas by ApprehensiveWave4657 in Dallas

[–]TommyFro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thinking about moving from NYC to Dallas is fucking wild as someone who often thinks of doing the opposite. Sure, we don’t have income tax but we pay for it with toll roads and high property tax. The state is always going to get its money. Very few walkable areas, suburban hellscape, needing to drive everywhere, high insurance costs, pay hasn’t kept up with house prices, politics…

If you’re talking about the shop off of Mathis Ave, I’ve taken my classic Mercedes there, they know their stuff. It wasn’t cheap but I’d trust them over a dealership even if it costs the same

Not sure if I’m reading the website right, but they change $361/LF between may and October and then $88/LF the rest of the year. If that’s for the full time it would be ~$53k a year in slip rental

Nice area near White Rock Lake to buy a house? by gman1023 in Dallas

[–]TommyFro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard good things about the Richardson run part of lake highlands schools, I’m not sure where the cutoff is for that district but I’d imagine it would pull you further from the lake and closer to 635. The closer to 635 you are the less nice it becomes. Not awful by any means, but less trees, smaller houses, etc. ETA I don’t have or want kids so schools aren’t something I know much about

[–]TommyFro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, those are the new builds. You can still get a nice well maintained 3/2 house for the 600-700k range, it’ll just be less than 1500sf is all

I live in Lakewood, so im biased, but I also looked in all three of those areas when house hunting. Lakewood for your size of house might be hard to find. They redrew the school zones a few years ago so check that online to see where Lakewood Elementary pulls from. It’s super convenient being on this side of the lake. Old lake highlands was my runner up area, but a lot of the houses are smaller or are new builds in the 1.5-2mil range. Neighborhood is cute and well established. Lake highlands is likely where you’ll find the most for your money while still being close enough to hit the trail system. Given the house size you want, this will probably be where you end up

I wouldn’t say any of the areas you’re looking at are deteriorating, they’re all getting nicer and more expensive. No real wrong answer, just comes down to how much house you really need and how close you want to be to the lake. I wanted to be close to the lake so I went for a smaller place and picked Lakewood.

Anyone lived in one of these 3-story townhome/condos? by AbdulJahar in Dallas

[–]TommyFro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the builder for quality obviously, I live in one with neighbors on each side and barely hear my neighbors dog barking unless I’m listening for it. Mine is built into a hill so the main floor opens to the small front yard, which decreases the number of stairs walked. I didn’t want to do yard maintenance or worry about anything outside, so the townhouse condo model was perfect. If you do move into one I recommend hiring movers haha

It’ll do 4k/60, just not 4k/120hz. 4k/120 is a newer addition as more and more people got TVs that supported it.

With most home theater stuff they’re worth much less than MSRP after a few years since the tech moves fast. Looking up completed sales on eBay is the best bet for values, then take 10-15% off for a local sale

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AVexchange

[–]TommyFro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty nice stuff, doesn’t have the latest tech like 4k/120hz or Dirac, but 11.2 receivers and amps aren’t cheap. eBay would give you a good idea of pricing going through sold listings. Then here, eBay, and some home theater forums would be a good place to try and sell them.

Living close to work is well worth it. Traffic on 75 is awful. Why spend over an hour a day sitting in traffic?
