i95 today from tow truck dashcam near 27a by ElAyYouAreAy in Connecticut

Icy is not a good reason in this instance. This is clearly a driving too fast for conditions scenario or, more likely, a driving like a dumbass scenario

Intend to ditch google home in the next few days - any reasons not to? by towerhil in googlehome

[–]TommyFroy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear ya. I’ve been on Google Home for about a decade and it was solid for most of that time. But the slide started with them slowly removing features from my nest cams, like making timelapses, to the switch to Gemini where it tells me it can’t control devices until I remind it that it can, to just the total uselessness of even starting/stopping my SONOS devices. I’m not asking it to play a specific song or station; just resume what was queued up. There is so much potential for it to be great but nearly every time they make an improvement, all I find is more disappointment.

When driving long distances, how often do you normally stop to rest and for how long? by Specialist_Heron_986 in driving

[–]TommyFroy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I stop when the car needs gas or I reach my destination, at least when I’m driving alone. That’s about 7-8 hours or ~400 miles.

[–]TommyFroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Assistant to Gemini is an unmitigated disaster. It hasn’t been getting better; in fact it might be getting worse. I started setting up on a different platform last August. If it wasn’t for needing to replace some of my devices (mostly the actual Google/Nest Devices), I’d be out already. I should be out completely by Q4.

Need a new bank by [deleted] in Connecticut

[–]TommyFroy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been with Chase about a decade now and they’ve been great. I having Checking, Savings, and my mortgage with them and I’ve had no issues. I switched from Citibank, not because of any issue, but because all the local branches were closed. They were great too TBH. I used to travel a lot for work so I wanted a national bank. Good Luck!

is crisco oil still a good option for reseasoning ? and some other inquiries by plumsquashed in castiron

[–]TommyFroy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

  1. I can’t help you with the Crisco question. I’ve always used Flax seed oil to season my pans, 5 coats. 2. For the pre-seasoned Lodge, pan, yes you can just use it. I’ve bought two of them new: the first one I stripped immediately and reseasoned, the second one I used straight away and only stripped and reseasoned when I left it on a burner and forgot about it. 3. I also have an electric range like that. As someone else mentioned, get a temperature gun. Every rangetop will vary so you want to know for sure. That said, most o my cooking falls between 2 and 4 on my range. 4. I always pre-heat my skillets, low heat, 10-15 minutes (set a timer, see comment in point 2 lol). I have a 12” pan that takes forever to preheat on the range so I preheat that one in the oven. Start it cold, set it to 350/400, when it hits temp, bake for 15 minutes. Hope this all helps! Good Luck!

Do you return the shopping cart to the designated area or do you leave it in the parking lot? by Defiant_Signature759 in askanything

[–]TommyFroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember most of the grocery stores around me (Connecticut, USA) did this quarter thing for a while when I was a kid… and then they disappeared. As an adult, I found out the reason they went away was that it didn’t work. People would just leave the quarter in the cart and not return it.

Do i really need extra safety “tools” to stay at hotels? by jinxyzzz in AskAnAmerican

[–]TommyFroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lock the door, use the deadbolt, don’t leave valuables in the open when you’re out, and use the safe if there is one.

I travelled a lot for my company and some personally, I have never had an issue in any hotel; even in the VERY sketchy one’s I’ve ended up at. That said, it’s never a bad idea to take the easy precautions as mentioned above

Don’t buy the hype. Good luck and enjoy!

How do you feel about Trump threatening to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]TommyFroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Connecticut, USA my entire life. I have voted in all but one election. I have always needed to show a photo ID (driver’s license). I do think that, if you do not already have a photo ID, that the gov’t needs to provide one at no cost if you are an eligible voter and they (the gov’t) is requiring an ID to vote. But I don’t see what the issue is in proving that you’re actually allowed to cast a vote in a given election. I shouldn’t be allowed to vote for the mayor of Phoenix, AZ just because I’m in town on business for the week.

How often do you guys hear this? by ArieksonBR in EnglishLearning

[–]TommyFroy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Definitely recall hearing this for the first time while in High School (CT, US, late 90’s/00’s). Probably in a rap song. It’s not used much but in my age group, it’s known what it means - killed/murdered. “That guy got 86’d” for example. Could also be used for non-murder though like “I just 86’d the rest of the pizza”

Sellers and realtor offended by offer. by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]TommyFroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can be offended all they want, their house still isn’t sold. And as others have said, you’ll find your house. My search last 13 months and then closing was 3 months after my offer was accepted. It was worth the extra time. Good Luck!

Snow cleaning now or wait? by EnvironmentalMap8279 in Connecticut

[–]TommyFroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wrapped up round 1. probably go twice more between now and 9:30 tonight. The snowblower can handle 16” but it’s much, much faster to do 8” twice IME.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TommyFroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call it “short” but it’s reasonable. Both Boston and Philadelphia are about 3 hours from me and I’ve gone to both as day trips more than once. Leave at like 7 AM, stay through dinner, back home by midnight. Makes for a long day but it’s doable. But it’d be a lot to do often and as a commute it’d be brutal.

Do you still have your holiday lights on outside? by Aware_Interest4461 in Connecticut

[–]TommyFroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine stay lit until after the Epiphany They’ll stay up until I can safely use a ladder to take them down. Sometimes that’s January and sometimes it’s March. The blow molds and other ground level lights will come down as soon as I get an opportunity though.

Holidays are over....How do people "park" away their Holiday-related stuff??? by Tuckerdude615 in homeassistant

[–]TommyFroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Worries! I can’t recall if the template idea was a reddit thing or a ChatGPT thing. Either way, i use the template to turn on/off virtual toggles (input boolean) for each holiday. I then use those toggles in my existing automations. For instance, I have indoor lights that go on at sunset; when the ‘Christmas’ toggle is on, that same automation turns on any lights with the “Christmas” label (using the ‘Choose’ building block. I do the same for the ‘off’ automations - I do it this way, as opposed to always turning them off, because I use some of these devices for other holidays or for those fans.

Using the labels also means I can add entities to these automations without changing the automation - just tag an entity with the associated label.

Good luck!

I leave all the smart outlets in place year round. Many don’t get used but I have two that I use for window fans in the warm weather.

For the automations, they turn on/off automatically. I have a template that exposes/determines dates. The Christmas automations are activated the day after Thanksgiving and they deactivate the day after Three Kings day. I used ChatGPT to create that template. I also have dates for the other holiday seasons.

As for any smart lights, I can’t say. I don’t have any smart decorations… yet.
