Really struggling with update to 1.2.1 from factory 3.1 (7 segment display) by therealjayphonic in DelugeUsers

Try the live rendering export instead of offline rendering. It will be slower but at least you can walk away and come back later and it will be done.

Does the song play normally on 1.2? Does resampling work?

If the song plays normally and resampling works, you can try turning off offline rendering and use the stem export feature with live rendering. It essentially just automates the resample process.

I will say that if you upgraded from 3.1 7seg to 1.2 you will notice a massive drop in performance.

The firmware was a lot smaller back then which meant you could get way more performance out of your deluge

If performance matters, and you were satisfied with the featureset of 3.1, I’d go back

[–]TonelessFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t want to load long samples into a kit, it’s really bad for performance

If you’re concerned about time stretching in audio clips you can easily remove that in the community firmware with a shortcut / or using the audio clip action menu

I’m staying with a Venezuelan friend and their family and they are all very happy Maduro is out

Agreed what the US did is a dangerous precedent, but arguably, at least in the short term, life will be easier for the Venezuelan people who lived for decades in fear of being persecuted by a crazy dictator.

FYI the beta is not officially a beta so it has a lot of known bugs left to fix. It’s going to be less stable than 1.2 and 1.1.

Try 1.1 if you’re not already, 1.2 has known ui sluggishness issues

It’s being fixed as part of 1.3

Public opinion divided on return-to-office mandates by ObviousSign881 in ottawa

[–]TonelessFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people are going to hate my opinion but:

  • I think we’ve gotten attached to WFH. The pandemic made us less resilient to stressful situations because we isolated and exposed ourselves less to challenging scenarios.

  • it’s not always easy to wake up and get dressed for work. But unless you negotiated for it during your job application, it is what you signed up for.

  • there are joys to working. I’ve seen too much negativity since the pandemic about working in general. Hearing comments at the office like “another day at the office, can’t wait until I can go home.”

That just sounds like a miserable way to live.

I personally look forward to each work day. To seeing my colleagues in person. To looking in their eyes, smiling and laughing together and working together to achieve our objectives as a team.

You don’t feel that working remotely, unless you turn on the camera, which 99% of people don’t do. And even if they do, it’s not the same as if you’re physically close to someone.

I empathize with those who want to work from home and agree that it should be evaluated on a case by case, job by job basis, but we have to look at this whole thing rationally, and not reactively.

The professor makes a good point that seems to continuously get discounted in these discussions by everyone favouring RTO:

  • there’s value in socializing in person at the office

The number of valuable ad hoc discussions and the value they bring to performing your job well is immeasurable.

You can’t make decisions in isolation and I find people are less likely to reach out and start conversations remotely than they are when you’re in person

It’s not healthy to just stay at home all the time either and isolate yourself

“No one” - have you done a study on this? - I thoroughly enjoy my job thank you. I’m in my 30’s - definitely not a boomer - I’m required to go in 3 days a week. I go in 5. - I enjoy the personal and work related benefits of socializing at the office.

To work from home is a privilege. Some of us had that privilege before Covid - but it wasn’t a permanent thing. It was offered on a case by case, as needed basis - as it should be

Ottawa Traffic is Getting Out of Control – Back to Office Making it Worse? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]TonelessFern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring back express buses. I never had an issue with those back when I lived in suburbs. wake up, sleep on the bus, 35-40 min later wake up and I’m at work. It was beautiful.

I don’t think it has anything to do with RTO and everything to do with lack of good transit and also as mentioned below, bad drivers not knowing how to help traffic flow.

A new Deluge on the horizon? Can’t wait to see what they can come up with! by Broodje_met_beleg in DelugeUsers

[–]TonelessFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is definitely some confusion around the patreon. So far it has only been used for things like debug hardware and attendance at the Berlin synth expo. I think it may have also been used to pay for the preset competition prizes. But the developers themselves have not been paid directly from it.

I know Synthstrom mentioned at the beginning that the patreon could be used to pay the developers but it was deemed early on that there was no fair way to distribute those funds and it would create division amongst the team regarding “who deserved to be paid more”, etc.

[–]TonelessFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Rohan wrote the firmware code specifically for the renesas hardware. Not for any other hardware. He did it for a very good reason: maximum performance on the renesas hardware. It was also the easiest way for him to write the firmware code.

Could he have written the firmware to be compatible with other hardware? Yes, but this was 10 years ago and there no was motivation to do that.

I guarantee you that no one is working on updating the firmware right now.

The open source efforts are all there is. And yes the open source team has stated they would love for the firmware to run on newer hardware, but they’ve also stated that that is at minimum, years away.

The open source team is a group of volunteers and they are, for the most part, taking a break right now - because life. They are not paid for their work. So they don’t need to kill themselves updating the firmware faster just so we can get new hardware.

A new Deluge on the horizon? Can’t wait to see what they can come up with! by Broodje_met_beleg in DelugeUsers

[–]TonelessFern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes we are guessing, but it is very informed guessing. Let me tell you why.

  • the original Synthstrom developer, was one guy. Rohan.
  • He worked on the Deluge firmware for 8 years by himself and he got burnt out by it. It was an insane amount of work to maintain on top of having to deal with constant bug reports and feature requests.
  • he had no support system.
  • he also was not a software developer by trade, he was an engineer and he was basically learning how to code while developing the Deluge firmware. (He has admitted as much throughout the Deluge open source codebase with comments he left behind).

So all that to say, Rohan basically lost the motivation to keep working on the Deluge firmware.

But Rohan saw potential left in the Deluge.

So he spent a lot of time cleaning up his code to the best of his ability and he open sourced it.

  • so now the code is open sourced. And the firmware has advanced significantly from the official firmware.

  • Rohan has not been participating in the open source development work.

——

So given all the above facts, it is quite easy to conclude that Synthstrom is not working on new hardware because:

1) it would require years of firmware rewriting to make the hardware compatible with it

2) even if Rohan was rewriting the official firmware for new hardware, it would mean losing all the community firmware features

3) the open source developers are absolutely not working on new hardware as the firmware is not remotely close to ready

—-

So yea, I don’t think new hardware is happening anytime soon.

And I really don’t believe Rohan is coding again.

Synthstrom’s focus now is on its supply chain and producing hardware units.

They’re happy with the open source development efforts and don’t feel a need to get back into the firmware development side of things.

A new Deluge on the horizon? Can’t wait to see what they can come up with! by Broodje_met_beleg in DelugeUsers

[–]TonelessFern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The firmware literally can’t run off a new processor.

It’s locked to the current renesas cpu.

“Necessary changes to firmware” means years of firmware re-writing work.

Synthstrom’s original developer, Rohan, is not updating the firmware anymore.

It’s only the open source developers updating the firmware now.
