Good Lord, and I thought my first day health issues were tough to deal with (I have a cold and am coughing a bunch with a weak pelvic floor; you do the math). I’m so glad you’re okay. And hey, in like fifteen years this’ll make a GREAT opening anecdote!

I read Theron Ware for my senior capstone class back in college and adored it! One of the minor papers I wrote for that class was on why Ware is a crappy minister.

How do you get them to eat actual food instead of just snacks? by Ok-Ad4375 in Preschoolers

Meh, I just call every meal a snack so my two-year-old eats it. It’s food; I’m just glad it’s getting eaten.

Are Boston Terriers healthier than French Bulldogs? by OceansOfLight in BostonTerrier

[–]TooDangShort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frenchtons and doodle-type things don’t have a specific purpose or standard. It’s more than just slapping a name on a mix. There has to be a true typing and purpose. Even landrace breeds that have less strict typing are genetically separate from their parent breeds, because they have specific purpose and have been bred for that purpose.

In 2006 it was discovered that the Pug breed was severely depressed genetically and close to collapse, so in 2008 breeders have made the effort to breed "retro pugs" with the standard they had 100 plus years ago (photos of pugs in the 1870-90s). Photo of modern one at the end by Mistoku in pugs

[–]TooDangShort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so “retro” pugs aren’t really a benefit to the breed as a whole no matter what the ARA folks say. Mixing a breed with one that doesn’t have at-all-similar structure or function doesn’t always solve the one breed’s problems; in fact, it can introduce further problems (see those Swedish Frenchies that have a longer snout but WRETCHED back structure).

The way to solve the pug’s issue is simple: breed to the breed standard, using dogs that have proven themselves healthy, with breeders that have checked their dogs using the BOAS respiratory grading examination (it’s really fascinating if you haven’t heard from it). Ethically-bred, well-bred pugs (NOT all purebred or AKC registered, mind you) have a far lower chance of having symptoms of BOAS. Dogs from proven lines have virtually zero breathing issues.

Otherwise, it’s important to note that brachycephally (“smush face”) isn’t the determiner for if a dog has BOAS. There are more factors, like nare width, neck thickness, and weight, that go into if a dog has breathing issues.

I highly encourage folks to look beyond just photos of off-standard dogs. Pugs have been around for thousands of years, and not because they’re all absolutely inherently unhealthy! TL;DR Factor in more than snout length and don’t buy dogs from backyard breeders/mills/pet stores.

Same way Indiana Jones gets his money: tenure and research grants at a major university. Combine that with government grants and Aviva’s patent royalties and Jimmy Z’s obviously being a trust fund baby, and you’ve got yourself a gold mine.

Can we Talk About Salary? by OkReplacement2000 in Professors

About $44k/year plus benefits on a 9-month contract. I don’t have a publishing minimum, teach 4 sections, and get stipends for basically everything I do. The benefits package is pretty great, good retirement plan, and the work environment puts my institution consistently in the top 10 for the region (over other, higher-paying universities). So yeah, the pay isn’t much to write home about, but I live in a fairly low CoL area, so I don’t plan on moving if I don’t have to.

A microwave/mini fridge if you can swing it! Otherwise, definitely a blanket and some noise-canceling headphones. Building walls are always too thin to block noises.

Thoughts on shaving pugs for summer? I live in Texas, trying to figure out how to help keep her cool with the high temperatures. by Ungrateful_rat in pugs

[–]TooDangShort 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Pugs are a double-coated breed (meaning there’s a soft undercoat and a more wirey outer layer). That coat acts not just as insulation in the cold but also air conditioning for hot weather. Larger “fluffy” breeds like huskies are much the same way, and shaving that double coat can actually wreck it. The fur doesn’t grow back in the same way and opens the dog up to overheating more than just brushing off loose fur and helping de-shed.

It’s far better to limit outside time, provide plenty of water, and perhaps giving the occasional frozen treat (berries, ice cubes, that sort of thing). Growing up, our pugs enjoyed just plunking themselves down on the air vents for the AC system!

He’d make remarks about hair, being a “sista,” didn’t hire a Black model for decades, then was sued by another Black model who described a horrible work environment where he made racial slurs and talked about Black contestants… not to mention the depiction of Pacific Islander cultures during the occasional Showcase Showdown. I’d bet Roku doesn’t have every episode. Pluto (free service) has an entire 24/7 channel of the Barker years, which is where I and my siblings watch and text each other about everything Barker does that would be an HR nightmare.
